Steam gives you two separate controls for this problem: set a download bandwidth cap in Steam > Settings > Downloads, and control where each demo is installed in Steam > Settings > Storage. You can also delay a demo’s automatic updates, transfer files over your home network instead of the Internet, or move an existing installation to another drive. Steam does not provide a per-demo disk-space quota, so the demo’s install dialog remains the authority for its required space.
Limit Steam’s download speed
The bandwidth limit applies to Steam’s downloads and updates, including demo downloads. It is a client-wide cap rather than a separate quota for one title.
Set the cap
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose Steam > Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Find Limit Download Speed, enable the control if necessary, and choose a value from the dropdown.
- Close Settings. New downloads and updates should remain at or below the selected limit, subject to normal short-term variation while Steam manages connections and disk activity.
Steam measures download rates in multiples of bytes per second, while Internet plans are usually advertised in bits per second. One byte is eight bits. For example, Steam’s unit explanation equates 768 KB/s with 6,144 Kb/s, or 6 megabits per second. Check the unit shown beside the dropdown before choosing a value; otherwise a number that looks appropriate for your Internet plan can be eight times too high or too low.

Choose a practical limit
- To leave capacity for video calls, browsing, or another person on the connection, select a cap comfortably below your line’s measured rate.
- If your plan is stated in megabits per second, divide that figure by eight to estimate the equivalent megabytes per second, then choose the nearest Steam value below it.
- A cap controls Internet transfer speed; it does not reduce the demo’s installed size or the temporary disk space used while Steam applies an update.
Control the download queue and update timing
The Downloads page is also Steam’s control center for active transfers. Use it to watch progress, reorder queued items, pause a transfer, and review which update is consuming bandwidth. Reordering is useful when a small demo should finish before a large game patch.

Schedule automatic updates
- Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Set the automatic-update time window to hours when the connection is less important to you. A window such as midnight to 8 AM is valid because Steam uses your local time.
- Save the setting and leave Steam running or allow it to start as your normal setup requires.
The schedule is not an absolute block. You can override it from Download Manager, and launching a game can force an update. Treat the window as a preferred period, not a guarantee that a title will never transfer data at another time.
Delay updates for one demo
- Open the demo’s page in your Steam Library.
- Choose Manage > Properties.
- Open Updates.
- Select Only update this game when I launch it.
The same menu offers Always keep this game updated and a high-priority option. The “when I launch it” choice postpones background updates, but the demo may still need to update when you start it. It therefore saves idle bandwidth and can defer storage growth, rather than guaranteeing an update-free launch.
Keep demos from filling the system drive
Steam does not document a setting that allows a demo to consume only a chosen number of gigabytes. Demo size depends on the title and the particular build. Read the install dialog for the exact required space before confirming a download; there is no universal demo-size figure or aggregate Steam statistic you can safely apply to every title.

Create a library on another drive
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Use the drive selector or add-library control to choose another available drive.
- Create a new Steam Library folder there, or select an existing Steam library that Steam recognizes.
- When installing a demo, select that library as the destination in the install dialog.
Steam supports library folders across multiple hard drives. This separates the demo’s payload from the system drive, but it does not reduce the number of gigabytes the demo needs.
Move an installed demo without downloading it again
- In the Library, right-click the demo or open its gear menu.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Move Install Folder.
- Choose the destination library on the other drive and confirm.
Steam relocates the existing files instead of fetching the demo again. Keep both libraries available until the operation finishes, and avoid disconnecting the destination drive during the move. The move changes location, not the demo’s installed size.
Use an external drive carefully
A portable external SSD can host a Steam library when internal capacity is tight. Steam does not specify a required capacity or speed for demos, so choose those based on the individual install sizes you expect and the performance your enclosure and computer can sustain. Keep the drive connected before starting Steam; if its library is unavailable, Steam may show the titles as uninstalled until the drive is mounted again. An external drive is a capacity solution, not a bandwidth limit.

Use local network transfers to avoid a second Internet download
Steam Local Network Game Transfers can copy existing installation and update files from another Steam PC or Steam Deck on the same home LAN. Steam checks for eligible local files before falling back to its content servers, which can substantially reduce Internet transfer use when one device already has the demo.

Requirements and limits
- Both Steam clients must be online and allowed to transfer over the local network.
- The source device must already contain the required game or demo files.
- The receiving device still needs enough free space in its selected library.
- Workshop content, Steam Cloud data, and shader files are excluded from this transfer feature and may still use Internet or other local resources.
Because the copy occurs over your LAN, the result depends on the network path and storage drives. A wired connection often avoids wireless contention, but Steam does not promise a particular transfer rate. If eligible files are missing or versions do not match, Steam falls back to downloading the remainder from its content servers.
Why storage keeps dropping after a demo is installed
The base demo payload is only one possible source of disk use. Steam identifies three other causes that should be checked when free space continues to decline:

- Automatic patches and updates: a new build can add files or require temporary working space while Steam replaces the old build.
- Saved-game files: local saves and related profile data remain even though they are usually much smaller than the demo itself.
- Multiplayer custom content: a demo can download maps, assets, or other content supplied by a server or session.
Check the Downloads page for recent update activity, then inspect the demo’s installed-files location and any custom-content behavior. Moving the library will not stop these categories from growing; it only changes the drive where they are stored.
Choose the right control for your goal

Troubleshooting common problems
The cap appears ineffective
- Reopen Steam > Settings > Downloads and verify that Limit Download Speed is enabled and still set to the intended value.
- Confirm whether the displayed rate is bytes per second or bits per second before comparing it with your Internet plan.
- Look at Download Manager for another transfer or an update that was already in progress when you changed the setting.
- Remember that disk writes, decompression, and network variation can make the instantaneous graph move around the selected ceiling.
A demo still updates outside the schedule
Steam schedules are preference windows. A manual override from Download Manager or launching the game can start an update outside that period. For a specific demo, use its Updates property and select the launch-only option, then expect any required launch update.

Creating a second library does not move existing files automatically. Use Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder for the installed demo, and verify the destination drive has enough free space. If the destination library is not listed, add it first under Settings > Storage.

Local transfer does not start
- Make sure both clients are online, running Steam, and permitted to transfer on the same LAN.
- Check that the source device has the exact installation or update files needed.
- Allow for excluded Workshop, Cloud, and shader data to use another transfer path.
- If Steam cannot satisfy the request locally, it will download the missing portion from its content servers.
Free space keeps shrinking after moving the demo
Moving the install folder changes its drive, not its growth behavior. Check for automatic patches, saved-game files, and multiplayer custom-content downloads. Also confirm that an update is not temporarily staging files on the original drive while the move or patch is in progress.
A low-bandwidth, low-storage setup that works
- Before installing, read the demo’s install dialog and choose a library on the drive with adequate free space.
- Set a conservative client-wide cap under Settings > Downloads, checking the byte-versus-bit unit.
- Set an automatic-update window during off-hours, then use the demo’s Updates property if background updates are still undesirable.
- If another household computer or Steam Deck already has the files, enable Local Network Game Transfers and keep both clients online.
- After installation, watch Download Manager and the destination drive. Investigate updates, saves, or custom content if usage rises beyond the original install requirement.
This combination addresses the distinct causes: the bandwidth cap protects the connection, update policies control when Steam transfers data, library management controls which drive bears the storage cost, and local transfers avoid repeating Internet downloads.
