You can limit what Meta Muse can access by connecting only the services you need, choosing the narrowest permissions available, and reviewing or revoking access. Meta also says you can switch off use of your Muse data for model training in Muse settings. These controls address different things: opting out of training does not itself disconnect apps or stop all data processing.

1. Connect only the services Muse needs

Muse can connect to apps, browse, and take actions on your behalf. Each connected account can therefore expose information through its integration. When setting up or reviewing connections, leave out services you do not need for your tasks. Meta says you can change a connection’s access or disconnect it at any time. Disconnecting limits future access through that connection; Meta’s published materials do not establish that it deletes information already retained.

Meta’s September 8, 2026 launch announcement describes Muse as rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android, and muse.ai. Availability and supported connections may change, so check the current Muse interface for the services and controls available to your account. Meta’s Muse launch announcement

2. Choose the narrowest permission available

When a connection offers a choice, prefer access that lets Muse read information over permission to change it. Avoid granting write access unless a task genuinely requires Muse to make changes. Meta’s connector documentation recommends requesting the minimum data needed and offering read-only access where possible. It describes options such as “Allow once,” “Always allow,” and “Deny”; sensitive write actions require approval each time under Meta’s connector rules. The options can differ by connector, so do not assume every service presents the same choices.

3. Turn off use of Muse data for model training

If you do not want Muse data used for model training, look for the training control in the current Muse settings and switch it off. Meta AI Research stated on September 8, 2026: “If you do not want your data to be used in model training at all, you can opt-out via a simple switch in Muse settings.” Meta has not published an exact menu path or setting label in the materials cited here, so use the current app or website rather than relying on a guessed tap-by-tap route.

4. Ask Muse to forget a detail and review stored information

Meta says you can ask Muse to “forget” specific things it has learned. Its safety article also says users can inspect, edit, and download files in their virtual machine (VM), including Muse’s memory about them. Use these options to review or correct details you do not want retained as part of that memory.

Meta’s published descriptions do not explain whether asking Muse to forget a detail deletes every associated copy, or whether it reverses any previous model-training use. Do not treat the forget control as confirmation of either outcome. Meta’s Muse launch announcement · Meta AI Research’s safety article

5. Review permissions and activity periodically

Meta says Muse lets users review agent activity, manage permissions, and set default permission settings for each connection. Check the current Muse controls regularly, especially after connecting a new service or authorizing an action. Approval prompts and activity history can help you manage access, but they do not mean that no information is processed.

What Meta says about Muse data and advertising

Meta says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with its ad systems. Its safety article also says limited data may leave the VM for inference and telemetry, and that browsing or actions Muse performs on your behalf can indirectly affect ads. These are Meta’s descriptions of its system, not an independently audited guarantee that no information leaves Muse’s environment. Meta AI Research’s safety article

Separate security feature: Confidential VM

In a September 2026 announcement, Meta described a planned Muse Confidential VM that would encrypt the VM and conversations with a key only the user holds, so Meta could not access them. The announcement described this as a future capability; it does not establish that the feature is generally available. Meta AI Research’s safety article

Reported permission concern

On September 30, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported a journalist’s allegation that Muse appeared to refer to Messages content the journalist said he had not authorized. That report is an account of an individual allegation, not proof that Muse accesses all users’ messages or an independent technical explanation of what happened. Meta’s published connector rules describe permission controls, but the report is a reason to review the connections and permissions shown in your own account rather than assume every situation is identical.
