There is no universal “turn off AI” switch. To reduce exposure, work through four separate layers: disable the AI feature or extension, turn off model-training or product-improvement use, delete existing AI activity and configure automatic deletion, then review connected accounts and device permissions. These controls reduce future use and access, but they do not necessarily erase records already held, stop safety or fraud processing, or withdraw data that a connected service has already received.
The four controls you need to check
AI settings are usually split across product features, privacy controls, activity history, and operating-system permissions. Treat them as separate decisions rather than looking for one master switch.
- Disable the feature. Turn off an AI assistant, extension, writing tool, image generator, proactive suggestion, or screen-context integration that you do not need.
- Stop model-improvement use. Find the setting that permits conversations, voice interactions, prompts, or other activity to train or improve models. This is normally separate from chat history.
- Delete what is already stored. Remove AI activity and set an automatic-deletion period where the service offers one. An opt-out normally affects future use; it is not a deletion request.
- Review connected apps and device permissions. Revoke access to your camera, microphone, screen, messages, notifications, location, contacts, or other context when the feature does not require it.
Use the exact wording displayed in your account. Labels and availability can change with your account type, country, language, operating-system version, and staged rollout. A control on one device may not change the same account’s settings elsewhere.

ChatGPT: stop model improvement and use Temporary Chat deliberately
Turn off model-improvement use
- Open ChatGPT.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says new conversations are then not used to improve its models. This is a model-improvement choice, not a promise that no processing occurs. OpenAI documents exceptions involving submitted feedback and safety processes, and those may involve handling of the associated conversation.

Use Temporary Chat for conversations you do not want in normal history
Temporary Chat is a separate option from the Data Controls switch. Choose it when a conversation should not be saved in your normal chat history. It is useful for a one-off interaction, but it should not be treated as a universal “nothing is retained or processed” mode; safety, legal, abuse-prevention, and feedback-related handling can still apply.
Delete existing conversations
Deleting a conversation from the ChatGPT interface is a separate action from turning off model improvement. Review and remove old chats you no longer need, and check any account-level data-management controls available to you. If you sent feedback on a response, treat that feedback as a separate submission rather than assuming a later training opt-out withdraws it.
Google Gemini: separate activity, improvement, and connected-app review
Review Gemini Apps Activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity in your Google Account. There you can review and delete prompts and activity from connected apps, change the automatic-deletion period, and control whether activity is used to improve Google AI. Deleting activity and changing the improvement setting are different operations; complete both if you want to address past records and future model-improvement use.

Gemini can process more than typed prompts. Depending on the feature and your account, the information considered can include uploads, recordings or transcripts, device and app information, location, and subscription data. Review Google Account Activity Controls and your account’s connected apps separately from Gemini Apps Activity. A Gemini setting may not revoke an app integration that can supply context to Gemini.
Limit connected context
Disconnect integrations you do not use, especially those that can provide files, messages, calendar information, location, or device context. When a feature requires an integration, decide whether the convenience is worth allowing that context to be processed and whether the integration should remain enabled on every device.
Microsoft Copilot: training and personalization are independent choices
Review both training controls
Open Copilot’s privacy settings and inspect Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations. Microsoft documents opt-out controls for AI training. Turn off each category you do not want used for model training; disabling one does not automatically disable the other.

Decide separately about personalization
Microsoft says you can opt out of AI training while keeping personalization enabled. Personalization may make Copilot more useful by retaining or using preferences, but it is a different data-use decision from training. If your objective is to minimize contextual data use, inspect the personalization control as well and disable it when its benefits are not worth the additional profile information.

Voice-specific caution
Voice conversations can create audio, transcripts, or related interaction records. Do not infer that turning off text-conversation training covers voice activity. Check the voice control explicitly, and remove microphone permission at the device level when you do not use voice features.
Apple Intelligence: disable features at the device level
Turn off Siri AI on iPhone
On a supported iPhone, open Settings → Siri and turn off the Siri AI options shown on your device. Apple notes that supported models, languages, and regions differ, so the controls and available features may not match another iPhone.
Block Apple Intelligence extensions on iPad
On iPad, open Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Intelligence & Siri. From there you can block Writing Tools, Image Creation, and Intelligence Extensions, including the ChatGPT extension. This is a device restriction: it controls use on that iPad, not necessarily the same Apple Account on another device.
Check third-party extensions
If an extension such as ChatGPT is enabled for Apple Intelligence, disabling a general Siri feature may not remove the extension’s availability everywhere. Review the Intelligence & Siri restrictions and any extension-specific prompt or consent screen before allowing an assistant to handle text, images, or other content.
YouTube: activity is on by default and has a stated retention window
Review YouTube AI Feature Activity
YouTube AI Feature Activity is on by default. Open My Activity to review or delete prompts, outputs, and related content generated through YouTube AI features. Google states that account-linked prompts, outputs, and related content can be stored for up to 18 months. That is a stated maximum retention period for this activity, not a guarantee that every item remains for exactly that long.

Understand deletion delay
Google says deleted prompts or outputs may remain for up to 30 days for service and feedback processing. Therefore, deleting an item removes it from your activity view but may not cause immediate deletion from every operational system.
Account for human review
Google says human reviewers, including third parties, may read and annotate prompts, outputs, and related content for quality control and product improvement. Avoid entering confidential material into YouTube AI features when that review possibility is unacceptable, even after changing activity settings.
Meta products and WhatsApp: permissions and on-screen context are different risks
Microphone access on Meta apps
Meta’s Privacy Center states that microphone access requires your permission and active use of a feature that needs it. Review microphone permission in your phone’s operating-system settings and revoke it for Meta apps that do not need voice, calls, or audio recording. Revoking permission blocks future microphone access; it cannot undo audio already captured while permission was enabled.
Manage cross-product connections
Accounts Center manages connected experiences across Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. Review which accounts are linked and which shared experiences are enabled. Disconnecting an account or experience can limit future sharing, but it does not automatically delete information already present in another service.
WhatsApp and Google on-screen AI features
WhatsApp’s help guidance warns that opting into Google on-screen AI features can share visible WhatsApp messages and notifications with Google features. This is screen and notification context, not simply microphone access. Turning off Proactive Assistance does not turn off every other Google AI feature, so inspect each enabled integration and the Android or iOS permission associated with it.
Device permissions: block new access, not past receipts
Use your operating system’s permission manager to review each app’s access to the camera, microphone, photos, files, contacts, location, Bluetooth, notifications, and screen capture. Disable permissions that are not required for the feature you intend to keep. For screen sharing or notification reading, look for a specific screen-recording, display-capture, notification-access, or on-screen-assistant permission rather than assuming camera and microphone switches cover it.

- Screen and notifications: disable access for assistants that do not need to summarize what is visible or received.
- Location and contacts: remove them from apps whose recommendations or personalization do not justify the context.
Permission changes are forward-looking. They do not control records the app already received, server-side retention, training use, safety logs, fraud monitoring, or a connected third party’s copy. After revoking access, also delete relevant activity in the service that received it.
What “training off,” deletion, and feature disablement each accomplish
| Action | What it normally changes | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Disable an AI feature or extension | Stops that feature from being offered or invoked on the account or device where it is disabled. | Does not erase previous prompts, outputs, telemetry, feedback, or data held by another connected service. |
| Turn off model training or product improvement | Generally limits future use of eligible interactions for model improvement. | Does not necessarily remove past records or prevent safety, legal, fraud, operational, or feedback-related processing. |
| Delete AI activity | Removes selected records from the service’s activity interface and starts its deletion process. | Deletion may be delayed, and copies or logs may remain for stated operational, safety, legal, or feedback periods. |
| Set automatic deletion | Schedules future activity cleanup according to the available period. | Does not retroactively change data already shared with a connected app or third party. |
| Revoke device permission | Blocks new camera, microphone, screen, notification, or similar access from that device. | Does not retract content already captured or change server-side retention and training rules. |
| Disconnect an account or integration | Limits future context flowing between linked products. | Does not automatically delete data previously synchronized or copied. |
A practical shutdown sequence for any app
Use this sequence when an app has several AI features and its settings are scattered across account and device menus.
- List the data paths. Note whether the feature can receive typed text, files, images, voice, camera frames, screen content, notifications, location, contacts, or account activity.
- Disable the feature first. Turn off the assistant, extension, proactive suggestion, writing tool, image generator, or screen-context option you do not need.
- Open privacy or data controls. Turn off every applicable model-training, product-improvement, conversation-training, and voice-training setting.
- Delete historical activity. Remove prompts, chats, recordings, uploads, outputs, and connected-app activity. Set automatic deletion if available.
- Review integrations. In account-connected-app pages, remove services that can supply messages, files, calendar data, notifications, or other context.
- Revoke device permissions. Use the operating system’s privacy controls for camera, microphone, screen capture, notifications, files, contacts, and location.
- Verify on every device. Sign in on your phone, tablet, browser, and work account to confirm that a device-specific setting has not left another access path open.
- Recheck after updates. Feature names and defaults can change during staged rollouts. Confirm the current labels after a major app or operating-system update.
Comparison of the main controls
| Service | Training or improvement control | History and deletion | Context and permission considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Improve the model for everyone in Settings → Data Controls; new conversations are not used to improve models when it is off, subject to documented exceptions. | Temporary Chat is separate from normal history; delete existing conversations separately. | Feedback and safety handling can still apply; review device microphone, camera, and file permissions for voice or multimodal features. |
| Google Gemini | Gemini Apps Activity includes a control for use in improving Google AI. | Review, delete, and configure auto-delete in Gemini Apps Activity. | Prompts, uploads, recordings or transcripts, device and app information, location, and subscription data may be relevant; check Google Account Activity Controls and connected apps. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Separate controls for Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations. | Use Copilot’s available privacy and activity controls; training opt-out is not a deletion request. | Personalization can remain enabled after training opt-out, so decide on that setting independently. |
| Apple Intelligence | Device controls under Siri and Intelligence & Siri restrictions rather than one universal account switch. | Use the applicable Apple service and device controls for any history or extension data. | Supported models, languages, and regions differ; iPad restrictions can block Writing Tools, Image Creation, and Intelligence Extensions such as ChatGPT. |
| YouTube AI | Review AI Feature Activity and related improvement choices. | Activity is on by default; account-linked content can be stored up to 18 months, and deleted prompts or outputs may remain up to 30 days for processing. | Human reviewers, including third parties, may read and annotate prompts, outputs, and related content. |
| Meta and WhatsApp | Use product privacy controls and review connected experiences in Accounts Center. | Delete relevant activity in the product where it was created; disconnecting Accounts Center links is not deletion. | Microphone access requires permission and active use of a needed feature; Google on-screen AI features can receive visible WhatsApp messages and notifications. |
Hardware privacy accessories: useful but narrowly scoped
Webcam covers
A physical webcam privacy cover is a reasonable optional barrier for a laptop when camera-based or on-screen AI features are unnecessary. It can block the lens even if software settings are wrong, but it cannot stop microphone capture, screen reading, server-side retention, or model training. Choose a cover that does not obstruct the laptop lid, display, or camera indicator.
Privacy screens
A laptop privacy screen reduces shoulder-surfing and visible screen exposure in public. It does not change what an enabled assistant can read from the screen, what an app has already uploaded, or how a provider retains and uses that data.
Common failure modes and fixes
“I turned off training, so my old chats should be gone.”
Training controls and deletion controls solve different problems. Delete existing chats or activity explicitly, then set automatic deletion where available. Allow for the provider’s stated deletion delay and operational exceptions.

Check that you are in the correct account, app version, device, language, and region. Some controls are staged or limited by account type. Use the exact labels currently shown rather than following an older screenshot.
“I disabled Proactive Assistance, but Google AI still appears in WhatsApp.”
WhatsApp’s guidance says that switch does not disable every Google AI feature. Review each Google on-screen integration and revoke the relevant screen or notification access.
“A camera cover means the laptop is private.”
The cover addresses only the camera lens. It does not affect microphones, screen capture, uploaded files, retention, human review, or model-improvement policies. Combine the physical barrier with software permissions and account-level controls.

How to choose a proportionate setup
Minimum disruption
Keep the features you actively use, turn off model-improvement controls, set automatic deletion, and remove unused integrations. This preserves convenience while reducing secondary use of interactions.
Strict conversational privacy
Disable AI extensions and proactive features, use Temporary Chat or equivalent limited-history modes where appropriate, delete old activity, revoke microphone, camera, screen, and notification permissions, and avoid sending sensitive material to services that disclose human review.
Shared or work devices
Prefer device-level restrictions for camera, microphone, screen capture, and notification access so another account or app cannot silently re-enable a capability. Confirm whether an employer, school, or administrator controls the device; account settings may not override managed policies.
Whichever setup you choose, revisit it after major app and operating-system updates. AI controls are feature-specific, and a new integration can create a new data path without changing the setting you previously reviewed.
