The most effective approach is layered: switch off each service’s AI-training or model-improvement control, disable chat or activity history where offered, delete stored activity, remove connected apps, audit device permissions, reduce public visibility, and never enter information you would not want retained or reviewed. An opt-out generally affects future eligible use; it may not erase copies already processed, safety-retained conversations, feedback-linked data, screenshots, reposts, or models trained earlier.
This guide covers the current controls documented for ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and LinkedIn, then shows how to apply the same privacy principles to social networks whose menus and legal rules vary by account and country.
Start with a five-minute privacy reset
Work through these layers in order. A training switch alone does not control every way an account, device or public post can be used.
- Change model-improvement settings. Look for labels such as Improve the model, Training on conversation activity, Generative AI improvement or Keep Activity.
- Stop ongoing history. Turn off chat history, activity saving or retention when the service provides a separate control.
- Delete what is already stored. Use the service’s delete-history, activity-management, export, account-deletion or privacy-request tools. Deletion from the visible account does not necessarily erase safety copies or data already used for training.
- Cut secondary access. Disconnect extensions, third-party apps and connected services; then review microphone, camera, contacts, location, photos, files, notifications and browser permissions.
- Reduce public exposure. Make profiles and posts less discoverable, remove old material, and assume anything public can be copied, screenshotted, reposted or collected by downstream systems.
After changing a control, sign out and back in (or check the setting from another device) to confirm it remains off. Keep a note of the date and the exact account affected, because business, school and regional accounts can follow different policies.

ChatGPT: stop model improvement and manage history
Turn off training for an individual account
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Open Data Controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
For individual Free, Plus and Pro plans, this setting prevents future eligible conversations from being used to improve models. It is not a universal deletion command: information that has already been processed, retained for security, or incorporated into a model may not be reversible.
Delete chats and submit a formal request
Use ChatGPT’s chat-history controls to remove conversations you no longer need, and use the Data Controls options for data export or account deletion when you want a broader request. OpenAI’s Privacy Portal also documents a request labeled Do not train on my content. A deletion or opt-out request can have exceptions required for fraud prevention, security, legal compliance or abuse investigations, so read the confirmation and retention explanation shown for your account.
Feedback is a separate exception
If you select thumbs up or thumbs down on a response, OpenAI says the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to improve models even when you have opted out. The official wording is: “For individual plans (Free, Plus, and Pro), if you submit feedback on a response—for example, by selecting thumbs up or thumbs down—we may use the entire conversation associated with that feedback to improve our models.” Do not attach sensitive material to feedback, and remove identifying details before sending any report.
Microsoft Copilot: disable conversation training (personal accounts)
Web and mobile control
For a personal Microsoft account, open Copilot’s Privacy controls and turn off Training on conversation activity. Microsoft documents this mobile path: Menu → profile icon → Account → Privacy → Training on conversation activity. Voice-conversation training is a separate control, so disable that option too if you use Copilot by voice.
Do not confuse personal Copilot with Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft 365 Copilot operates under organizational terms, Microsoft 365 service configuration and administrator settings. A personal-account switch does not change how an employer or school tenant handles prompts, files, meeting data or retention. Ask the tenant administrator for the applicable policy before using a work account for personal material.
Microsoft’s privacy FAQ warns: “You shouldn’t provide any confidential or sensitive personal data that you would not want Microsoft to use for purposes explained in this FAQ and in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.” Treat that warning as applicable even after disabling training, because safety processing, account security and other service operations can still require handling of your prompts.

Google Gemini: turn off Keep Activity and understand the 72-hour window
Disable or delete Gemini activity
- In Gemini, open Settings and help.
- Select Activity (or open your Google Account’s Gemini Apps Activity page).
- Choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity.
For users aged 18 or over, Google says Keep Activity is on by default. While it is on, chats, uploads, feedback, connected-app information and some location or usage information are saved and may be used to improve services, including training generative-AI models. Google also says human reviewers may examine material used for service improvement.

What “off” changes—and what it does not
With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Gemini Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you choose to send feedback. Google may nevertheless retain those chats for up to 72 hours for providing a response, processing feedback and maintaining safety. This short-term service copy is different from the account activity list you can see and delete.
Google states that Gemini Apps activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default when that setting applies. Data reviewed by service providers may be disconnected from your account and retained for up to three years, according to Google’s explanation. Turning off Gemini Activity does not turn off Web & App Activity or Location History in other Google products; review those controls separately if you want to reduce broader account tracking.
Google’s support wording is: “If Keep Activity is off, your future chats won’t appear in your Activity, and won’t be used to train our AI models, unless you choose to send Google feedback.” Avoid feedback containing personal, financial, medical or confidential information.
LinkedIn: opt out of generative-AI improvement
LinkedIn provides a member setting called Data for Generative AI Improvement. Turn it off in your LinkedIn privacy or data settings to stop future use by LinkedIn and its affiliates for model improvement. LinkedIn says the choice does not undo training that has already taken place.
Availability and wording can differ by geography. LinkedIn describes special treatment for the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom and references a privacy-notice update dated November 3, 2025. Read the notice presented for your country before assuming that an opt-out covers every LinkedIn product, partner or historical post.

Social-media posts: reduce reuse when no universal switch exists
There is no single control that governs every social network. Current authoritative material does not establish one universal, all-region opt-out path for Meta, X, TikTok, Reddit or Snapchat. Their interfaces, defaults and legal rights can change, so open each service’s first-party privacy center immediately before changing a setting.
Apply this checklist on each network
- Check AI and data-sharing notices. Search the privacy center for “generative AI,” “model training,” “improve products,” “public content” and “automated processing.” Record whether the control is an opt-out, a deletion request, or only a restriction on future use.
- Restrict audience and discoverability. Prefer friends, followers or approved contacts over public posting; limit search-engine indexing, profile lookup by email or phone, tagging and resharing.
- Remove unnecessary history. Delete old posts, direct messages, comments, saved media and drafts that no longer serve a purpose. Deleting the visible item cannot recall another user’s screenshot, download, quote or repost.
- Revoke connected applications. Remove social logins, analytics tools, games, bots and browser extensions you no longer trust. Their copies may have separate retention schedules.
- Audit permissions. Set microphone, camera, precise location, contacts, photos, files and background activity to “while using,” “ask every time” or “deny” unless the feature genuinely needs access.
- Review advertising and personalization. These controls may not stop AI training, but they reduce profiling and the signals available for recommendations or targeted advertising.
A private account lowers routine exposure; it cannot control copies made by other people or material that a platform or partner already collected.
What an opt-out actually changes

Delete history without assuming the provider forgot
“Delete” has several meanings. Removing a chat from an app’s sidebar usually removes the user-facing record. An activity-delete tool may remove a larger account log. An account-deletion request can trigger a broader schedule, while a privacy request may specifically prohibit future model use. None automatically recalls copies exported by you, another user, an integration or a reviewer.

Providers can retain limited data for security, fraud prevention, legal obligations, debugging, safety or feedback processing. Google’s Gemini explanation illustrates the distinction: chats made with Keep Activity off may remain for up to 72 hours, and data reviewed by service providers may be retained for up to three years after being disconnected from the account. Other services use different periods; rely on the notice attached to your account rather than assuming Google’s periods apply elsewhere.
Prevent sensitive data from entering the system
Privacy settings reduce future use; they do not make a chatbot a confidential vault. Before sending a prompt, remove names, account numbers, addresses, private keys, passwords, medical identifiers, customer records, unreleased business material and anything covered by a contract or professional duty.
- Replace real names with roles such as “customer A.”
- Crop screenshots to the smallest region needed and redact identifiers before upload.
- Use a synthetic example instead of a real record when testing a workflow.
- Do not paste passwords, recovery codes, API keys or authentication cookies.
- Check the destination account and connected tools before pressing Send.
For workplace or school information, use only an approved tenant and follow the organization’s data-classification policy. A consumer toggle cannot override an employer’s retention, discovery or contractual obligations.

Device and account controls that complement AI settings
Review permissions after every major app update
On your phone and browser, inspect each social or chatbot app’s permissions and revoke anything unrelated to the feature you use. Voice assistants need a microphone; a text-only session generally does not need continuous microphone access. A camera permission should not be left enabled simply because you once scanned a document.

- Use a unique password and multi-factor authentication.
- Sign out of old sessions and remove unfamiliar devices.
- Review authorized applications and active browser extensions.
- Keep recovery email and phone details current, but do not publish them on a profile.
- Install updates from the official app store and avoid modified clients that bypass privacy controls.
A practical monthly audit
- Open every chatbot and social account you used during the month.
- Record the current training, activity-history and feedback settings.
- Delete conversations, uploads and posts that no longer have a purpose.
- Review connected apps, voice features and device permissions.
- Check public visibility from a logged-out browser or a friend’s account.
- Export important records before deleting an account, then submit the provider’s deletion or “do not train” request if needed.
- Repeat after a product redesign, account-plan change, move to another country or switch from a personal to an organizational account.
Common mistakes and how to recover
“I turned off training, so I can paste confidential files.”
Recovery: stop sending sensitive material, delete the conversation or activity record, revoke connected access, and notify your security or privacy contact if the material belonged to an employer or client. An opt-out does not promise zero retention or zero human review.
“Deleting the chat removed every copy.”
Recovery: check exports, shared links, integrations, screenshots and recipients. Submit the provider’s formal deletion or privacy request and read its stated exceptions.
“My account is private, so posts cannot train anything.”
Recovery: remove unnecessary posts and tighten audience settings, but assume approved viewers can copy them and that previously collected material may follow a different retention or legal process.
“The setting disappeared.”
Recovery: verify whether you are in a mobile app, a different country, an under-18 account, a business tenant or a newly branded product. Use the service’s current first-party privacy center; do not rely on an old screenshot or a menu path from another account type.

If privacy is decisive, compare services using the six questions in the table above rather than marketing labels. Favor the service that gives a clearly documented future-use opt-out, separate deletion controls, short and explicit residual-retention periods, limited human review, narrow connected-app access and settings that apply to your region and account. If an administrator controls the account, obtain the policy in writing before entering regulated or confidential information.

What privacy tools cannot do
Webcam covers, privacy screens, VPNs and cleanup utilities can address other risks, but they do not control provider-side AI processing of content already submitted. They cannot retract a screenshot, erase a model that has already learned from eligible data, or change an organization’s retention obligations. Use them for their intended device or network purpose, not as substitutes for account settings and careful sharing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off ChatGPT’s “Improve the model for everyone” delete my previous chats?
No. It changes future eligible model-improvement use. Delete chats or use OpenAI’s export, account-deletion and Privacy Portal options for broader requests, while recognizing that security, legal, feedback and previously completed processing can have exceptions.
Can Google still keep a Gemini chat after Keep Activity is off?
Yes. Google says chats made with Keep Activity off may be retained for up to 72 hours for responding, feedback processing and safety, even though they do not appear in Activity or train models unless you send feedback.

Will making a social-media account private stop screenshots and reposts?

What should I do if I sent a password or confidential file to a chatbot?
