The session URL is short-lived, so generate it on demand rather than saving it as a permanent account link.
Choose the hosted portal or a custom billing page

The hosted portal is Stripe’s interface for subscription and billing management. A custom page gives you more control over the experience, but your application must implement the desired actions and enforce ownership itself. These are implementation trade-offs, not performance or security benchmarks.
Configure the portal features separately
In the Stripe Dashboard, open the customer portal configuration, or configure it through Stripe’s portal configuration API. Enable the features your customers need:
features.customer_updatecontrols editable customer fields. When enabled, it takes anallowed_updateslist. Documented options includeaddress,email,name,phone,shipping, andtax_id.features.payment_method_updatecontrols whether customers can change saved payment methods.
Choose the customer-update allow-list to match your billing requirements. Billing address (address) and shipping address (shipping) are distinct options. Enabling profile edits alone does not enable saved-payment-method changes.

See Stripe’s customer portal configuration reference for the current configuration fields. Confirm examples against the API version pinned to your Stripe account; a preview API version shown in documentation URLs should not be copied blindly into production.
Create a portal session when the customer asks to manage billing
- Add a Manage billing action to the authenticated area of your application.
- On your server, identify the Stripe Customer using your trusted mapping from the signed-in application account. Do not accept an arbitrary customer ID from the browser as proof of ownership.
- When the action is requested, create a customer portal session for that Stripe Customer. Set a return destination in your application that is appropriate for the customer.
- Redirect the customer’s browser to the session URL returned by Stripe. Create a fresh session for each request instead of treating that URL as a permanent account link.
- Test the configuration and session flow with test data and the API version configured for your account before release.
Stripe’s customer portal session reference describes creating sessions on demand when customers intend to manage subscriptions and billing details.

Know which billing details you are changing
“Billing details” can refer to data on different Stripe objects, so choose the update path based on the data you mean:
- Customer profile: The portal’s customer-update feature can let a customer edit selected fields such as name, email, phone, billing address, shipping address, or tax ID.
- PaymentMethod billing details: Stripe’s PaymentMethod API updates the
billing_detailsfield on an attached PaymentMethod. Stripe describes these details as information that may be used or required by particular payment methods. This is not the same as editing every field on the Customer object. - Saved payment method: The portal’s payment-method-update feature is a separate capability. Enable it if customers need to change a saved method.
For a custom form, use Stripe’s PaymentMethod update endpoint when you intend to change that PaymentMethod’s billing_details. Ensure the PaymentMethod is attached to the intended Customer and that your server verifies the signed-in user’s relationship to both objects.

Do not confuse billing management with Checkout prefill
Checkout can prefill some details for an existing customer, but Stripe documents conditions for this behavior, including a saved card and compatible allow_redisplay and billing-details values. Treat prefill as a checkout convenience, not as a persistent interface for managing billing. See Stripe’s guide to using Checkout with existing customers for the documented conditions.
