To let a paired car or another Bluetooth device access contacts in an Android Enterprise work profile, assign an Intune Android Enterprise device-restriction policy and enable Contact sharing via Bluetooth. In Settings Catalog language, the opposite control is Block Contact sharing via Bluetooth (work profile level); leave that block disabled to permit sharing.
This is a work-profile data-sharing decision, not a switch that turns Bluetooth on globally. The setting affects whether a paired endpoint can read work-profile contacts, and it carries a retention risk because the endpoint may cache contacts during the first synchronization.
What the Intune setting controls
Android Enterprise separates work data from a user’s personal profile. The Bluetooth contact-sharing control governs only contacts stored in, or made available by, the work profile. It does not decide whether Bluetooth hardware is enabled, whether users may pair devices, or whether personal-profile contacts are visible.

When the policy allows sharing, a paired Bluetooth endpoint—most commonly a vehicle hands-free system—can read work-profile contacts for functions such as name-based dialing. Microsoft’s device-restriction guidance describes Enable as allowing a paired device, including a car, to access work-profile contacts.

The Settings Catalog presents the same decision as an inverse setting: Block Contact sharing via Bluetooth (work profile level). Setting that value to true prevents sharing work-profile contacts with paired Bluetooth devices such as cars or mobile devices. Therefore, an administrator who wants sharing should configure the allow control or ensure the block control is not enabled.
Before you configure the policy
Confirm the enrollment model
The documented scenario applies to Android Enterprise devices with a work profile in two enrollment scopes:
- Personally owned with a work profile: the employee’s device keeps personal and company data in separate profiles.
- Corporate owned with a work profile: the organization owns the device while Android still separates work and personal data.
Choose a profile type that matches the device’s actual enrollment. A policy assigned to the wrong Android Enterprise mode will not give the expected result.
Make sure the work profile is active
Android disables work-profile access when the user turns the work profile off. While it is paused, apps cannot look up work-profile contacts or remote work directories. A correctly configured Intune policy cannot override that profile state, so ask the user to turn the work profile on before testing Bluetooth contact access.
Decide whether the business case justifies endpoint exposure
Allowing sharing improves hands-free calling, but the paired endpoint may copy or cache contact records. A vehicle’s infotainment system, for example, can retain names and numbers after the phone disconnects. Treat this as a disclosure to another device, not merely a convenience permission.

Configure Contact sharing via Bluetooth in Intune
Use an Android Enterprise device-restriction profile targeted to the work-profile devices that need this behavior. Intune labels can vary slightly as Microsoft updates the admin center, but the policy type and setting names are the important parts.
- Open the Intune admin center and go to the Android device configuration area.
- Create a new Android Enterprise device restrictions profile, selecting the enrollment type used by the target devices: personally owned work profile or corporate-owned work profile.
- In the restrictions settings, locate the Bluetooth or work-profile data-sharing section.
- Set Contact sharing via Bluetooth to Enable. If you are using Settings Catalog, find Block Contact sharing via Bluetooth (work profile level) and leave it unblocked (false or not configured, according to your policy design).
- Assign the profile to the required user or device groups. Keep the assignment narrow if only particular roles, vehicles or regions are approved to receive work contacts.
- Complete the profile creation, then initiate an Intune sync on a test device or wait for the next device check-in.
- Pair the test phone with the approved Bluetooth endpoint and verify that work contacts are available for the intended hands-free functions.
Use a pilot group before broad deployment. Test a personally owned work-profile device and a corporate-owned work-profile device separately when both enrollment models are in use, because their other Bluetooth restrictions and management capabilities can differ.

| Policy choice | Hands-free behavior | Work-contact exposure | Operational consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enable Contact sharing via Bluetooth | A paired endpoint can access work-profile contacts, including for car calling. | Contacts may be copied or cached by the endpoint during pairing or synchronization. | Best for approved hands-free scenarios; requires retention and offboarding controls. |
| Block Contact sharing via Bluetooth | Paired Bluetooth devices cannot receive work-profile contacts. | Prevents this sharing path while leaving unrelated Bluetooth functions governed by their own policies. | Use when contact disclosure to cars or accessories is not acceptable. |
| Not configured | Intune does not change the setting; Android’s own behavior applies. | Microsoft security guidance states that work contacts are, by default, not available on other devices such as automobiles. | Leaves the outcome dependent on platform defaults and any other management configuration; document that choice explicitly. |
Do not interpret “Not configured” as a guaranteed deny in every Android release or enrollment state. It means Intune is not enforcing a value. If your organization requires a predictable outcome, configure the intended allow or block state and test it on the Android Enterprise versions you support.
What happens when a user pairs a car
First pairing
After the policy is applied, the user pairs the phone with the Bluetooth system in the normal Android and vehicle menus. The endpoint may request access to contacts or begin a synchronization. The work-profile policy determines whether work contacts can be supplied; the endpoint’s own software determines how it displays and stores them.
Contact caching
Microsoft warns that a Bluetooth device might cache contacts when it first connects. A cached address book can remain on the car or accessory even after the phone is out of range. Before enabling the policy, identify who is responsible for clearing that cache when a vehicle is shared, reassigned or returned.

Turning the work profile off
Pausing the work profile prevents apps from looking up work contacts while the profile is off. It does not guarantee that a car has forgotten contacts it already received. Profile state and endpoint retention are separate controls.
Disabling the policy later does not erase synchronized contacts
Changing the Intune value from allow to block stops future sharing, but Microsoft cautions that it might not remove work contacts already synchronized after an earlier pairing. Assume that previously transferred records remain on the Bluetooth endpoint until they are explicitly deleted.
For a vehicle, the cleanup procedure normally involves removing the phone from the vehicle’s paired-device list and deleting the vehicle’s stored contacts or performing its documented infotainment reset. For other accessories, use the manufacturer’s erase or factory-reset process. If the endpoint is managed by another team, record the handoff and obtain confirmation that its address book was cleared.
When a device is lost, sold, returned or assigned to another driver, include Bluetooth contact deletion in the offboarding checklist. Remote removal of the Intune profile alone should not be treated as proof that endpoint copies are gone.
Do not confuse this control with other Bluetooth and contact policies
Block Bluetooth
Block Bluetooth is broader. On supported corporate-owned modes it disables Bluetooth itself, affecting pairing and every Bluetooth use case, not just work-contact sharing. It is not the right setting when employees need Bluetooth audio or calls but must not expose work contacts.

Block Bluetooth configuration
Block Bluetooth configuration prevents users from changing Bluetooth settings. It controls configuration authority, not whether an already paired endpoint may receive work-profile contacts. A device can have restricted configuration and still require a separate contact-sharing decision.
Search work contacts and show caller ID in the personal profile
The policy named Search work contacts and display work contact caller ID in personal profile governs lookup and caller-ID behavior from the personal profile. It is separate from Bluetooth sharing. Enabling Bluetooth contact sharing will not, by itself, make work contacts searchable in personal-profile apps, and blocking personal-profile caller ID does not necessarily block a permitted Bluetooth synchronization.
Work-profile state
Android’s profile switch is another independent factor. A user who pauses the work profile loses app access to work contacts until the profile is turned on again, regardless of the Intune Bluetooth setting.

Check the policy assignment and enrollment type
Verify that the phone is enrolled as the Android Enterprise work-profile mode selected when the profile was created and that the user or device is in the assigned group. A policy for a different enrollment type will not necessarily apply.

Turn the work profile on
Look for the work-profile briefcase indicator and verify that the profile is not paused. If it is off, turn it on and retry the pairing test.
Remove stale pairing data
A vehicle may have retained an earlier authorization or an incomplete address book. Delete the phone from the vehicle, delete the vehicle from the phone, clear the vehicle’s stored contacts if available, and pair again after the policy is confirmed.
Check the endpoint’s capabilities
Not every Bluetooth accessory supports contact synchronization. Test with an approved endpoint known to support phonebook access before changing enterprise policy. A successful audio connection alone does not prove that the endpoint can display contacts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeparate caller-ID symptoms from phonebook symptoms
If calls connect but names are not shown, determine whether the problem is Bluetooth phonebook access or the separate personal-profile caller-ID/search policy. These controls affect different data paths and should be tested independently.
Governance checklist for organizations that allow sharing
- Limit assignments: target only users and devices with an approved hands-free requirement.
- Document the data flow: tell users that paired vehicles and accessories may retain names and numbers.
- Define endpoint ownership: identify who clears cached contacts from shared or reassigned vehicles.
- Test both enrollment models: personally owned and corporate-owned work-profile devices can have different surrounding restrictions.
- Use a deny policy where certainty matters: explicitly block sharing when endpoint retention is unacceptable instead of relying on an unconfigured default.
- Include Bluetooth in offboarding: remove pairings and erase endpoint address books when a user, vehicle or phone changes hands.
- Review related policies together: Bluetooth availability, Bluetooth configuration, personal-profile contact search and caller ID each solve a different problem.
Recommended decision
Enable Contact sharing via Bluetooth only for a defined, approved use case such as hands-free calling in managed vehicles, and pair it with an endpoint-cleanup process. Use Block Contact sharing via Bluetooth (work profile level) when the organization cannot accept copies of work contacts outside the phone. Leaving the control unconfigured preserves Android’s platform behavior but does not provide the same explicit, auditable decision as an allow or block policy.
