OBS’s automatic reconnect can restore its connection to YouTube, but it does not guarantee that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. After OBS reconnects, check the stream health and any error messages in YouTube Live Control Room. If health remains poor, troubleshoot the reported issue—especially dropped frames, an unstable connection, an unsustainable bitrate, or an outdated stream key—instead of relying on another reconnect.

What OBS reconnect does—and what YouTube stream health tells you

OBS automatic reconnect retries the encoder’s output connection after an interruption. YouTube Live Control Room separately reports the status of the incoming stream. A reconnect message in OBS therefore confirms a retry, not that YouTube has resumed receiving a healthy feed. Check Live Control Room after recovery and use its specific status or error message to choose what to troubleshoot. OBS documents connection troubleshooting; YouTube explains stream status and troubleshooting in Live Control Room.

Set OBS to reconnect, but do not treat it as the fix

Find the automatic reconnect setting

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect.
  2. Enable automatic reconnect if you want OBS to retry its output connection after a disruption.
  3. OBS also exposes retry-count and starting-delay behavior; the delay increases on subsequent retries. The appropriate values depend on your OBS version and the interruption, so there is no universally correct retry count or delay to guarantee recovery.

When OBS reconnects, go to YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the stream health and messages there. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options control whether the encoder can start or stop a broadcast; they do not guarantee healthy ingestion after a disconnect. YouTube’s stream settings guidance describes the stream key and these controls.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings

For YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder profile, use constant bitrate (CBR) and set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and ensure your connection can sustain it reliably. YouTube’s figures are setting recommendations, not a guarantee of stream health or a measurement of your connection.

Test the complete stream before an event

  1. Run a speed test and compare the result with your selected bitrate. A speed-test result does not establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a live event.
  2. Start a test broadcast before the event using the same encoder settings and network path you plan to use live.
  3. Include audio and representative motion in the test, then check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages.
  4. During the event, keep Live Control Room available to monitor health and review messages. YouTube specifically advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a speed test, a pre-event test, and live monitoring.

Troubleshoot after OBS reconnects

Use the symptom YouTube or OBS reports to narrow down the cause. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That points toward connection capacity or stability; it is different from a stream-key or encoder-configuration error.

  • OBS reports dropped frames: Try lowering the video bitrate and, if you are using Wi-Fi, testing a wired connection. A wired path can help identify Wi-Fi instability but cannot resolve every cause of dropped frames.
  • YouTube shows an ingest or encoder-setting error: Read the exact Live Control Room message and compare the encoder’s settings with YouTube’s current guidance for your codec and output format.
  • The connection still appears unstable: Check the network path rather than assuming OBS reconnect has fixed it. OBS lists server selection, network software, VPNs, drivers, routers, cables, and other hardware among possible factors. Investigate the factors relevant to the symptom; none should be assumed to be the cause without checking.
  • The stream key was reset: Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. A stale key may prevent OBS from sending the feed using the intended stream configuration. Treat the key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to send to your stream.

OBS’s guidance suggests lowering bitrate and trying a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be unstable. A cable is only a test of the network path, not a cure for a stale key, encoder misconfiguration, ISP congestion, or a service outage. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting. For stream-key handling, see YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
