Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To keep viewers using the same YouTube live link, preserve the scheduled event’s watch-page URL and reconnect your encoder to that existing event using its ingest settings in YouTube Live Control Room. A reusable stream key is not a guarantee that an event URL will remain available, and YouTube does not document a universal reconnect window or promise that an event it has marked ended can be resumed.
Keep the viewer link separate from encoder settings
A scheduled event’s viewer-facing watch-page URL is the link you share with viewers. The encoder stream URL is the ingest address your software or hardware uses to send video to YouTube. The stream key is the credential used with the ingest server to identify and authorize that feed. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address” (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).
Store these separately in your production runbook, with clear labels. Changing or replacing encoder credentials is not the same thing as changing the event’s viewer URL. Keep the stream key private.
Prepare the event before sharing its URL
- Schedule the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Scheduling lets you promote the stream and share its viewer URL. Copy that URL into your runbook and promotional materials before the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guide distinguishes the scheduled stream viewers watch from the server URL and key used to connect an encoder (YouTube Help: Encoder live streaming).
- Record the event’s ingest settings securely. Save the server or stream URL, protocol, and stream key for the authorized operator. YouTube supports custom stream keys and workflows for reusing settings, but reusing a key does not itself guarantee continuity of a particular event’s watch URL (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings).
- Identify the primary and backup encoders. Make sure the operator knows which encoder should be sending the feed and how to access the intended event’s settings in Live Control Room. If you use RTMPS, copy the RTMPS server URL and key from Live Control Room rather than assuming an address from another setup is correct (YouTube Help: Stream using RTMPS).
Recover after an encoder failure
- Open the existing event in Live Control Room. Check its status and stream preview before creating anything new. The relevant question is whether YouTube still shows the scheduled event as available, not merely whether the encoder process stopped.
- Reconnect to that event with its configured ingest settings. Use the event’s server URL, protocol, and key. If YouTube troubleshooting indicates the key needs replacing, or the key may have been exposed, copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends obtaining a key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder has trouble starting (YouTube Help: Fix live stream errors).
- Check the viewer-facing page and playback. Confirm that the existing event page is accessible and that its preview and live playback have picture and sound. Do not assume that a newly scheduled replacement is the same event; it can be a different event with a different link.
- If YouTube marks the event ended, verify before promising a restart. YouTube’s public guidance does not specify a universal reconnect grace period or guarantee that an ended event can be resumed. Check the event’s current state in Live Control Room and communicate a replacement link only if you have actually created a replacement event.
Test backup-encoder failover before the 24/7 run
YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup encoder (YouTube live streaming tips). Test with the same event and intended ingest configuration, and verify the viewer page, picture, sound, and local recordings during the changeover.

- Confirm the backup feed reaches the intended event rather than a separate test or replacement event.
- Check that the public player recovers and that audio and video remain usable.
- Verify local archive files are present and continue growing across the transition.
- Record who can access the event and securely retrieve or replace its stream key.
- Where possible, consider whether the two encoders depend on the same power and network path; YouTube’s guidance recommends testing rollover but does not prescribe hardware or quantify recovery time.
Protect the recording as well as the link
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived (YouTube Help: Encoder live streaming). That guidance does not make the same automatic-archive promise for a 24/7 stream. Maintain a local recording and verify that its files are intact and growing; do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy.
