Keep your phone in a sealed waterproof pouch you can reach easily, and store your power bank and cable separately in a dry bag inside your pack. If the weather or route could leave your gear seriously wet, add a second protective layer: a dry-bag closure can leak, so layered protection is safer than relying on one bag.
Use different protection for the phone and power bank
Your phone needs to stay protected while remaining accessible for navigation, photos, or calls. A waterproof phone pouch is a practical rain barrier: Samsung Support India advises placing a phone in a waterproof zip-lock pouch while travelling in rainy weather.
A power bank is usually better stored in a separate small dry pouch or dry bag inside your backpack, along with its cable. Do not assume the bank can tolerate rain simply because it is designed for outdoor use. Huawei says its listed power banks are not water-resistant, while Anker advises against exposing its power banks to rain, snow, or liquids. Those warnings apply to the manufacturers’ own products; check the documentation for your exact model.
Choose protection for the conditions

The layered approach follows Sea to Summit’s recommendation to double-bag electronics placed in a dry bag; for seriously wet conditions, it suggests an IPX8 case inside the bag. Treat an IPX rating as a product claim with specific conditions, not a guarantee that a device is safe in every backpacking situation. The sources do not establish a universal protection level for all phones, power banks, or dry bags.

Set up and check your gear before leaving
- Check the device instructions. Confirm the specific phone, power bank, pouch, or case guidance. Water resistance, if a maker claims it, only applies under that maker’s stated conditions.
- Test each pouch or bag as its maker directs. Confirm the phone fits, the closure seals fully, and the case or bag is suitable for the exposure you expect.
- Pack the phone for access. Seal it in its waterproof pouch before rain begins, and keep it somewhere you can reach without leaving the pouch open.
- Pack the power bank separately. Put the bank and cable in their own dry storage inside the backpack. Keep the bank accessible enough to inspect, but protected from direct rain.
- Add a second layer when exposure could be severe. Place electronics in an inner waterproof case or pouch, then inside the dry bag.
Use and recover wet electronics carefully
- Avoid using the phone with wet hands. If the phone is wet, do not charge it; follow the phone maker’s moisture-handling instructions.
- Keep devices out of direct rain during charging. The cited guidance does not establish that it is safe to charge a power bank while it remains sealed inside a pouch.
- If liquid gets into a power bank, stop using it and follow its manufacturer’s service guidance. Do not try to keep using it simply because it appears to work.
What a dry bag can—and cannot—do
A dry bag is useful storage, not a guarantee against every kind of water exposure. Its closure can leak, so packing electronics in a single roll-top bag leaves a potential weak point. A phone pouch gives quicker access, while separate dry storage keeps the power bank protected in the pack; double-bagging adds a further barrier when the consequences of getting wet are higher.
