To keep an NYT Connections streak, sign in to the correct New York Times account and finish that day’s puzzle before midnight in your local time. A puzzle completed after midnight is counted as late: the current streak is broken and a new one starts. If results seem to be missing, verify the account, inspect the Connections statistics screen, refresh the app session, and contact NYT Games support if the record still looks wrong.
There is no self-service control that restores a broken Connections streak. The steps below separate a genuine late play from an account, synchronization, or display problem so you know what can be fixed and what cannot.
How NYT Connections streaks are counted
The cutoff is your local midnight
Connections uses the local time on the device or browser where you play. The New York Times Help Center says a puzzle must be solved before midnight local time to count toward the current streak. If you submit the final group after midnight, NYT treats that puzzle as late, breaks the previous streak, and begins a new streak.

This boundary applies even when the puzzle was opened before midnight. Starting a game at 11:58 p.m. does not reserve the previous day’s credit; the completion time is what matters. If you travel, change the device’s time zone, or play while a device has an incorrect clock, the local-time boundary can produce a result that differs from what you expected. Treat the displayed local date and time as the deadline, not the time shown in another region.

A broken streak cannot be reset from the game
NYT’s published Connections guidance states that streaks cannot be reset once they are broken. There is no account setting, archive action, or button in the statistics screen that can reinstate the old current-streak number. Support can investigate a technical error, but a puzzle genuinely completed after the cutoff is not presented as an error that players can undo.
Set up play so progress is attached to your account
Sign in before solving
Use the same New York Times account every time you play. When you are logged out, NYT stores game progress locally on that device. Local data can disappear if the browser is cleared, the app is removed, the device is replaced, or the session changes. A locally stored result also may not appear on another phone or computer.
When you are signed in, NYT associates saved puzzle progress, statistics, and streaks with the account. That lets the information follow you when you upgrade a phone or switch devices. Before beginning a puzzle, open the account or profile control and confirm that the displayed email or account identity is the one used for your established Connections record. Do not assume that an app installation automatically selected the right account.

If you solve on a phone in the morning and a browser later, sign in on both before playing. Multiple NYT accounts can make a healthy record look incomplete because each account has its own statistics. A result that appears on one device but not another is often an account or session mismatch rather than a lost puzzle.
Make the deadline visible
A calendar or phone reminder shortly before your local midnight is a practical safeguard, especially if you normally play late. The reminder does not change NYT’s rules; it simply gives you time to finish and verify the result while the puzzle still belongs to the current release day.
Understand what signing in does and does not do
Signing in protects account-saved progress; it does not make a late completion eligible for the prior day. It also cannot merge two separate NYT accounts into one history. If you have accidentally played under different email addresses, choose the account containing your established record and use that account consistently. Ask support about an account discrepancy rather than repeatedly switching identities and creating more local sessions.

What the Connections statistics screen tells you
After a puzzle is completed, open the statistics view to inspect the record instead of relying only on the streak number shown on the result screen. In the Games app, game statistics and streaks are available from the Me tab. The Connections statistics page includes:
- total puzzles completed;
- win rate;
- current streak;
- maximum streak;
- perfect puzzles; and
- a histogram of mistakes.
NYT says the statistics page records puzzles played from June 15, 2024 onward. That date limits what the built-in history can show; it is not evidence that earlier play was counted in the same statistics view. Compare several fields together. For example, an unchanged maximum streak with a lower current streak indicates a break, while a total-puzzle count that is lower than expected can point to a different account or unsaved local progress.
Read the fields as a diagnostic pattern
- Current streak: the run that is active now. It can reset after a missed release-day completion or a late completion.
- Maximum streak: the longest run recorded for that account. A new break does not erase the historical maximum.
- Completed puzzles: a count that helps distinguish an account mismatch from a streak-only change.
- Win rate: useful for confirming that you are viewing the expected account, but it is not a replacement for the streak fields.
- Perfect puzzles: another account-specific cross-check.
- Mistake histogram: a distribution of mistakes that can reveal whether the page belongs to your established play history.
Take a screenshot of the statistics page before changing anything if a number looks wrong. The screenshot preserves the exact current streak, maximum streak, totals, and histogram that support staff will need to compare with account records. Avoid deleting app data or clearing browser storage until you have documented the symptom, because local-only play may be the only visible evidence of what happened.
Recover a result that appears to be missing
Follow this sequence in order. It starts with checks you can perform immediately and ends with the information NYT support needs if the record is genuinely wrong.
- Confirm the account. Check the signed-in identity in the browser or Games app. If it is different from the account used for earlier puzzles, sign out and sign back in with the established account. Do not continue playing while signed into the wrong account, because that can create a second, confusing record.
- Open Connections statistics. In the Games app, select Me, then view the game statistics and streaks. In a browser, open the Connections statistics view shown after completing a puzzle. Record the current streak, maximum streak, completed-puzzle count, win rate, perfect-puzzle count, and mistake histogram.
- Check the puzzle’s completion time. If the final answer was submitted after local midnight, the new streak is expected under NYT’s rule. If you completed it before midnight and the record disagrees, treat the situation as a possible technical or account problem instead of trying to repair it through the archive.
- Refresh the session. Force-quit the Games app or close the browser tab, reopen it, and start a new login session. A stale session can display old account data even when the underlying record is intact.
- Check another signed-in device. Use a second phone or browser only after signing in to the same account. If the statistics agree across devices, the original device was probably displaying stale or local data. If they differ, note exactly which device shows each version.
- Reinstall only when necessary. NYT’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reinstalling the app if restarting and creating a new login session do not resolve the problem. NYT says reinstalling will not affect saved Games streaks or statistics, provided those records were saved to the account.
- Report the suspected error. If the account, timing, and refreshed sessions all check out but the result remains absent or incorrect, use NYT Games feedback or the bug-report path in the app. Include the device and operating system, whether you were using the app or a browser, the account identity, the puzzle date, approximate completion time, and the values shown in statistics. These details let support distinguish a late completion from a synchronization defect.
Do not create a second problem while troubleshooting
Do not replay the release-day puzzle from the archive, open several accounts, or keep changing the device clock as a test. Those actions cannot restore a streak and can make it harder to establish which account and session produced the original result. First preserve the visible evidence, then use one correctly signed-in session for each check.

The Connections archive is useful for replaying older puzzles and adding those games to statistics, but it does not change streak accounting. NYT says archived puzzles affect statistics while affecting neither the current streak nor the maximum streak. Streaks are based on the puzzle played on its original release day.

That means an archive replay can increase your completed-puzzle total or alter other statistical measures without repairing a missed day. If you forgot yesterday’s puzzle, playing it from the archive is worthwhile for practice and history, but it cannot convert the missed release-day result into a streak day.
Distinguish a normal reset from a data problem

Detailed troubleshooting for app and sync symptoms
The app shows an old streak after you finish
Close the app completely and reopen it rather than repeatedly tapping the statistics screen. Then start a fresh login session and verify the account identity. If the value changes after the new session, the first display was stale. If it does not, compare the same account on a browser or another device and save screenshots for support.
Your result appears on one device but not another
First check whether both devices are signed into the same account. A logged-out game can remain visible on the device where it was played while never reaching the account record. Once both sessions use the same account, refresh each session. Persistent disagreement is evidence to report, not a reason to replay the puzzle from the archive in hopes of forcing a streak update.
You changed phones or cleared browser data
Local progress can be lost when device storage or browser data is removed. Account-saved progress, statistics, and streaks should remain available after signing in on the replacement device. If the record is absent, confirm the account identity and use the statistics fields to determine whether you opened a new account. Reinstalling the Games app does not remove saved Games streaks or statistics, according to NYT’s troubleshooting guidance.
You are unsure whether the puzzle was late
Use the local date and time at the moment you submitted the final group. A start before midnight followed by a submission after midnight is still late. If you cannot establish the timing and the statistics show a new streak, support may be the only route for checking a suspected recording error; the published guidance does not provide a player-facing reset.
A daily operating routine that protects the streak
- Open Connections from the same signed-in account you normally use.
- Check that the account identity is correct before entering guesses.
- Finish and submit the puzzle before your local midnight, leaving enough time to resolve a mistaken group or app delay.
- After completion, open statistics and confirm that the current streak and completed-puzzle count changed as expected.
- If you switch devices, sign in before playing and verify that the same record is visible.
- If anything looks wrong, stop replaying or changing accounts, refresh the session, and document the date and statistics before contacting support.
What support can and cannot do
NYT’s published rule is clear for an ordinary broken streak: it cannot be reset. Support is appropriate when the facts suggest a technical failure, such as an on-time completion missing from an account that was signed in, statistics that disagree across correctly signed-in sessions, or a result that disappears after a documented app error. A support request should explain the sequence rather than simply ask for a reset.

Provide the puzzle date, your approximate local completion time, the platform (Games app or browser), device and operating-system details, the account identity, the steps already attempted, and the exact statistics values currently displayed. Mention whether the puzzle was played on release day or from the archive. This gives NYT enough context to separate release-day streak accounting from a synchronization or display defect.
Choose the right remedy
Use the remedy that matches the symptom. A reminder and an earlier finish protect a future streak but cannot change a past result. Signing in protects progress across devices but cannot merge unrelated accounts. The archive changes play history and some statistics but never either streak field. Restarting, creating a new login session, or reinstalling addresses app and display problems; none is a streak-reset function. Only a support review is appropriate when an on-time, account-linked completion appears to be missing.

- Midnight is local, not a universal NYT time. Your local deadline controls the streak.
- Opening a puzzle is not completion. The final submission must occur before the cutoff.
- Archive play is not backfill. It can affect statistics but not either streak field.
- Maximum and current streaks answer different questions. A broken current run does not necessarily erase the historical maximum.
- Logged-out play is fragile. Local storage is tied to the device and can disappear.
