To keep a home comfortable on a cool, rainy day, heat the rooms you use when you use them, reduce draughts around doors, and keep ventilation working so cooking, washing and showers do not leave excess moisture indoors. There is no separate recommended thermostat setting just for rainy days. UK guidance treats comfort as the goal; its 18°C advice applies to particular rooms and circumstances, not every room in every home.
Set the heating around the rooms you use
UK Health Security Agency guidance says, “You should heat your home to a temperature that is comfortable for you.” It suggests trying to heat frequently used rooms, such as the living room or bedroom, to at least 18°C. This is guidance rather than a universal ideal setting or a guarantee against illness or damp. Separate UK ventilation guidance advises people aged 65 or older, or with a long-term health condition, to keep the room they occupy at least 18°C.
Adjust the schedule before turning up the thermostat
Use the timer or schedule to have heating come on shortly before you get up and switch off after bedtime. If you cannot heat every room, the Met Office suggests heating the living room during the day and the bedroom shortly before bed. In very cold weather, extend the heating period rather than raising the thermostat setting simply to make the home warm faster.
Close doors to keep warmth in the room you are using, and draw curtains to help retain heat. These are simple ways to make the heating schedule work for the spaces that matter without keeping the whole home heated unnecessarily.

Reduce draughts without blocking ventilation
A door draught excluder can help limit cold air coming in around a door. England’s cold-weather tips and the Met Office both recommend draught excluders as a way to reduce draughts or heat loss. They are an optional small adjustment, not a substitute for dealing with a cold home caused by a larger building or heating problem.
Do not cover trickle vents or other required ventilation openings with draught-proofing. GOV.UK’s existing home ventilation guide says: “Always leave trickle vents open and unblocked, even in winter.” These vents bring in fresh air that mixes with warmer air indoors.

Keep air moving while managing indoor moisture
Cooking, washing and showering release water vapour. When ventilation is poor, that moisture can build up and condense on cold surfaces, contributing to damp and mould. Rain outdoors does not, by itself, show that a home is damp; look instead for signs such as persistent condensation, leaks or ineffective extraction.
Use extractors during moisture-producing activities
Run kitchen and bathroom extractor fans while cooking or showering, and keep them maintained so they can remove moist air effectively. Leave trickle vents open and unobstructed. England’s damp and mould guidance explains why managing moisture and ventilation matters, particularly in rented housing.

Ventilate briefly if a window is the practical option
If you need more air and the weather allows it, a brief or partial window opening can provide ventilation without leaving a window fully open for a long time. Avoid letting rain enter, and consider comfort and security. When opening a window is impractical, use installed vents and functioning extractors instead.
Choose an approach that fits the problem
| Approach | Where it acts | Ventilation impact | Type of change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heating schedule and room choice | When and where heat is used | Does not require blocking ventilation | Quick occupant adjustment |
| Door draught excluder | Gaps around doors | Preserves ventilation if vents remain clear | Small optional accessory |
| Trickle vents and extractors | Fresh-air supply and removal of moist air | Provides ventilation when open, unobstructed and functioning | Use and maintain installed equipment |
| Brief or partial window opening | Room air | Adds ventilation; avoid letting rain enter | Short occupant adjustment |
| Building, heating or ventilation investigation | Underlying property conditions | Should consider ventilation alongside energy-efficiency work | Longer-term improvement with qualified local advice |
The cited guidance does not compare products, give prices or quantify energy savings, so there is no evidence-based basis here for ranking accessories or promising a particular reduction in bills.

With PTC heating tech and high speed fan, it is rated to heat up to 200 square feet in seconds, which would cover most bedrooms, offices, bathrooms and smaller living rooms.
- Upgrade abs material: Upgrade abs material applied, which is more flame resident. The room heater with six feet lead cord and 2 prong connection has a long lasting life. The space heater for indoor use makes a noticeable difference and works well in small to medium rooms when positioned properly.
If the home stays cold or damp
Persistent cold, visible mould or recurring condensation may point to a problem with the building, heating or ventilation rather than a thermostat setting alone. Investigate the underlying cause and seek qualified local help, especially before making energy-efficiency improvements that could affect ventilation. A single gadget or surface cleaning will not repair a building defect.

If you use an electric heater, keep it away from curtains and furniture, do not use it to dry clothes, and unplug it when you leave the room or go to bed. England’s cold-weather advice also recommends having heating and cooking appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer and using a carbon monoxide alarm that complies with EN 50291. Local rules and support schemes vary, so check guidance for your location and housing situation.
