When the power goes out during hot weather, use low-risk steps to limit heat indoors, cool your body, and check on anyone at higher risk. If your home becomes dangerously hot, go to an air-conditioned place or community shelter rather than relying on a fan. CDC advises seeking shelter when conditions are too hot and says not to rely solely on fans to stay cool.
Before an outage, decide where you will go
Identify an air-conditioned destination before extreme heat arrives, along with how you will get there and who can help with transportation or check-ins. A public cooling center may be available, but openings and hours vary by location and event. Check with your local health department or emergency management office, or call 2-1-1 where available. The American Red Cross also recommends planning ahead for heat emergencies: heat wave safety.
If someone in your household depends on powered medical equipment, ask their clinician and equipment provider about backup power and when to relocate. Plan for medicine that needs refrigeration with a clinician or pharmacist; do not assume an outage will leave storage conditions safe. CDC warns that large-scale outages can be life-threatening for people who rely on home medical devices, and the Red Cross advises discussing a backup plan: CDC power outage guidance and Red Cross power outage guidance.
If you keep a battery-powered fan or USB power bank in an outage kit, check the manufacturer’s stated battery type, charging method, compatibility, and runtime for the setting you expect to use. A power bank may charge compatible small devices, but its capacity alone does not establish that it can run a particular fan, medical device, or cooling appliance.

What to do when the power fails
Limit heat entering and being generated indoors
- Close blinds or curtains on sun-facing windows.
- Reduce unnecessary activity and avoid using heat-producing appliances when possible.
- Use a shaded, cooler area of the home if one is available, and follow local weather and emergency alerts.
These are practical ways to reduce heat exposure; how much they help depends on the home and conditions. If you cannot maintain safe conditions, leave for an air-conditioned place.
Cool your body while arranging a safe place
A cool shower or bath, or a wet cloth on the skin, can provide temporary relief if water is available. Drink fluids, following any clinician-directed fluid restrictions. These measures are not a substitute for leaving a dangerously hot home.

Use fans only within their limits
A fan moves air; it does not cool a room like air conditioning. CDC says, “Don’t rely solely on fans to keep you cool.” Its current heat guidance advises using indoor fans only when the indoor temperature is below 90°F; above 90°F, a fan can increase body temperature. That figure is not a universal evacuation threshold: if you feel unsafe or conditions are too hot, seek an air-conditioned location or shelter. See the CDC heat prevention guidance and CDC power outage guidance.
Know when heat illness needs urgent action
Watch for dizziness, headache, weakness, nausea, heavy sweating, shortness of breath, or muscle cramps. Heat stroke is a medical emergency: call emergency services for suspected heat stroke rather than relying on home cooling alone. CDC notes that body temperature in heat stroke may reach 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes; this is a CDC-published medical figure, not a measurement specific to power outages. Review CDC information on heat-related illness and its heat prevention advice.

Never run a generator or gasoline-powered engine inside a home, basement, or garage, or within 20 feet of a window, door, or vent. Use a battery-powered or battery-backup carbon-monoxide detector. Do not use a gas range or oven to heat the home. A generator is not a safe way to cool a house unless it is installed and operated according to applicable requirements. CDC advises moving to a safer place if conditions are too hot or too cold; see its power outage safety guidance.

Choose the response that fits the conditions
| Option | Best use | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Air-conditioned public place or community shelter | When the home is dangerously hot or you cannot maintain safe conditions. | Check local access, hours, transportation, mobility needs, pets, and arrangements for powered medical devices. Availability varies by place and event. |
| Cool shower, bath, or wet cloth | Temporary personal relief at home if water is available. | Does not make a dangerously hot room safe or replace moving to a cooler place. |
| Battery-powered fan | Personal air movement and comfort when charged and used within CDC’s temperature guidance. | Does not lower room temperature or prevent heat illness in very hot conditions. |
| USB power bank | Charging compatible small devices during an outage. | Compatibility and runtime depend on the specific model; do not assume it can power a fan, medical device, or cooling appliance. |
