Cancelling Google AI Pro does not immediately delete your Google Account or Drive files. At the end of the current billing cycle, however, Google removes the plan’s extra storage and Pro-only Gemini benefits. If your combined Drive, Gmail and Photos usage is above the free 15 GB quota, the account becomes over quota and new activity is restricted. To avoid disruption, either move to a Google One storage plan, reduce usage to 15 GB or less, or keep an AI plan if you still need Gemini Pro.
What happens when Google AI Pro ends
Your cancellation normally takes effect when the paid billing period ends, not when you press the cancellation button. Until that date, the AI Pro storage allowance and included features continue under the terms shown in your account. Google One Help explains that cancelling a storage plan means you lose all additional storage at the end of the billing cycle and may then be over quota.
At the start of the next month of the plan, Google downgrades the account to personal storage of up to 15 GB shared across Google Drive, Google Photos and Gmail. This is one pool, not 15 GB for each service. A large Photos library, Gmail attachments and Drive files all count against the same limit.

The immediate issue is capacity and feature access. If your stored data is higher than the available quota, Google applies restrictions to new activity. Google’s policy separately warns that if an account remains over quota for two years or longer, all content may be deleted. Treat that as a serious risk window, not as an automatic deletion on the cancellation date.

What you lose and what you keep

Google’s Gemini Apps Help page lists these removals under the statement that when an AI Pro plan ends, the user no longer has access to the Pro Gemini app, expanded storage and the other plan benefits. Standard Gemini access is a separate, lower-capability experience rather than a continuation of Pro.
Will you lose your Google Drive files?
Not immediately. Cancelling the plan removes the extra quota at the end of the billing cycle; it does not describe an instant wipe of your Drive, Photos or Gmail data. The risk is that your account becomes over quota and remains in that state.
While over quota, Google lists the following restrictions:
- Gmail cannot send or receive messages. Messages sent to the account are returned to the sender.
- Drive cannot sync or upload new files. Desktop sync stops, and you cannot create new Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms or Vids files.
- Other people cannot edit or copy affected files until storage use is reduced.
- Google Photos cannot back up new photos or videos.
These restrictions affect new activity and collaboration. They are not the same as immediate deletion. Nevertheless, an account that stays over quota for two years or longer may have all content deleted under Google One’s stated policy, so do not treat an over-quota account as a safe long-term archive.
How much storage do you need?
Start by reading the storage meter for the Google Account you plan to cancel. Compare total usage—not just Drive usage—with the quota you will have after the change. The relevant calculation is:
Drive usage + Gmail usage + Google Photos usage = total account storage.

If the result is 15 GB or less, the account can fit within the free allowance. If it is higher, choose a replacement plan or remove enough data before the downgrade takes effect. Leave a margin rather than targeting exactly 15 GB; new email, attachments and photo backups can consume the remaining space quickly.

1. Replace AI Pro with a Google One storage plan
This is the cleanest option when you need cloud capacity but do not need Pro Gemini. Before the current billing cycle ends, open Google One settings from the Gemini app or from Google One and select Change membership plan. Choose a lower Google One storage tier under the downgrade options, review the price and effective date shown for your account, and complete the change.
The exact tiers, currency, monthly or annual term and price depend on your country and billing channel. Use the amount displayed in your account rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere. A storage-only plan preserves the selected Google One capacity but does not restore Pro models, Pro-only chats, Gmail or Docs integrations, higher limits, direct expert support or other AI Pro benefits.
2. Reduce usage to the free 15 GB quota
Choose this route if you want to stop paying for storage. Use Google’s storage-management tools to identify large Drive files, bulky Gmail messages and Photos items, then export anything you must retain before deleting it. Empty the relevant Trash areas after deletion; items left in Trash can continue to count toward storage.
Because the quota is shared, deleting only Drive files may not be enough. A nearly full Photos library or years of Gmail attachments can account for most of the usage. Recheck the storage meter after cleanup and continue until the total is at or below the free allowance.

3. Keep an AI plan
If you rely on Pro-only Gemini models, existing Pro chats, Gmail or Docs integrations, or the higher usage limits, keeping an AI plan avoids the feature downgrade. Cancelling AI Pro while buying a storage-only plan keeps capacity but does not keep those AI capabilities. Compare the plan options shown in your account and make the change before the current period ends if uninterrupted access matters.

Step-by-step: downgrade to storage only
- Check the renewal date. In the Gemini or Google One account settings, note when the current billing cycle ends. The storage and feature changes take effect at the end of that period.
- Open membership management. From the Gemini app or Google One, open the plan settings and choose Change membership plan.
- Review downgrade options. Select the Google One storage tier that covers your combined Drive, Gmail and Photos usage. Confirm the displayed price, billing term, currency and effective date.
- Complete the change. Follow the confirmation screens. Save the confirmation details so you can verify which plan will be active after the AI Pro period.
- Recheck storage after the effective date. Confirm that the new quota appears in Google One and that your storage meter is below it. If the meter still shows the old allowance temporarily, check again later; quota changes and deletions can take time to propagate.
Do not assume that changing a Gemini setting alone changes storage. The membership screen must show the replacement Google One plan and its effective date.
Step-by-step: move to the free quota safely
Make an inventory first
- Record the current total and the amount attributed to Drive, Gmail and Photos.
- Identify shared folders, team files and items that other people may need to copy or edit.
- List irreplaceable photos, documents and email that should be exported before deletion.
- Check devices and applications that automatically upload photos or synchronize Drive folders.
Export before deleting
Download or otherwise archive data you need to keep before removing it from Google. An external drive, another cloud provider or a local computer can hold an archive, but an archive does not preserve Google’s cloud quota or Gemini Pro access. Verify that exported files open correctly before deleting the cloud originals.
Delete the largest items first
Use Google’s storage-management tools to sort for large Drive files and review old Gmail messages with large attachments. In Photos, remove unwanted videos and duplicates. Work in batches so you can restore an item if you discover that it was needed.

Deletion may move items to Trash rather than remove them permanently. Empty the applicable Drive, Gmail and Photos Trash areas after checking your archive. Then return to the storage meter and wait for the total to update. Do not schedule the cancellation for the same day as a large cleanup if you have no margin; give the account time to reflect the new usage.
How Gemini access changes
After AI Pro ends, Google says you can no longer start new chats with Pro, continue chats created with Pro, or use features available only on Pro. A conversation that was created with a Pro model is therefore not a way to retain Pro access after the plan ends.
Standard Gemini access can remain available without an AI plan, subject to current limits and feature availability. Google’s 2026 limits documentation describes the difference this way:

Google warns that limits can change without notice. It also notes that some high-compute features may be unavailable to users without a plan during periods of high demand. These figures describe documented limits, not a guarantee that every feature or model will be offered in every country or account.

What happens to Gmail, Drive and Photos if you stay over quota?
Gmail
When the account is over its storage quota, Gmail cannot send or receive messages. Mail sent to you can be returned to the sender, so tell important contacts to use another address while you resolve the quota problem. Existing mail is part of the storage calculation; deleting messages with large attachments can be more effective than deleting many small messages.
Drive
New uploads and synchronization stop, including desktop sync. You also cannot create new Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms or Vids files. Google states that other people cannot edit or copy affected files while the account remains over quota. If you collaborate on shared material, reduce usage or add storage before a deadline rather than waiting for a document-creation error.
Google Photos
Photos cannot back up new photos or videos while the account is over quota. Existing items remain part of the account’s stored content. Check phone backup settings after cleanup so a device does not immediately refill the space you just freed.

Common problems and fixes
The account still shows AI Pro after I cancelled
Cancellation normally schedules the change for the end of the billing cycle. Check the membership’s effective date rather than expecting an immediate downgrade. Until that date, the old plan may continue to appear.
I bought storage, but Gemini Pro disappeared
A Google One storage plan and an AI Pro plan provide different benefits. Confirm that the membership you selected includes an AI plan if Pro Gemini is required. Storage capacity alone does not re-enable Pro models, Pro chats or Pro-only integrations.

I deleted files but Gmail is still blocked
Make sure the deleted items are permanently removed from Trash and that the storage meter has updated. Check all three services because a large Photos library or Gmail attachment collection can keep the shared account above quota even after Drive cleanup.
My files are in a shared folder
Ownership and storage accounting can differ between shared content and files you own. Do not assume that moving a file to another folder or sharing it removes its storage impact. Check the account’s storage-management view and confirm which items are consuming space before deleting anything.
Photos started backing up again after cleanup
Review backup settings on each phone or computer. New uploads can consume the space you just freed, leaving the account over quota again.
I need a copy of my data before cancelling
Export the required Drive files, Gmail mail and Photos items before the billing period ends. Open a sample of the exported files and confirm that the archive is complete. Keep the archive somewhere you control; exporting does not keep Google’s online quota or Gemini features.
Cancellation checklist
- Record the billing-cycle end date and the plan that will replace AI Pro.
- Check total Drive, Gmail and Photos usage against the 15 GB free quota or the replacement plan’s capacity.
- Decide whether Pro Gemini models, Pro chats, Gmail/Docs integrations or higher limits are essential.
- Export irreplaceable data before deleting cloud copies.
- Remove large files, messages, photos and videos, then empty Trash.
- Confirm the storage meter has fallen below the applicable quota.
- After the change takes effect, verify both the storage allowance and Gemini access you expect.
The safest transition is deliberate: choose a replacement plan or reach the free quota before the AI Pro period ends, and do not leave an account over quota as a long-term strategy.
