To improve your chances of appearing in Google Search—including AI Overviews and AI Mode—keep publishing useful, distinctive content and make sure Google can crawl, index, and understand your pages. Google says these AI features use its existing Search index and core ranking and quality systems; there is no special technical shortcut that guarantees selection or traffic.

How Google AI features affect content visibility

AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search, not separate destinations with a wholly different set of publishing rules. Google says they draw on its Search index and core ranking and quality systems. That means foundational SEO still matters: a page has to be accessible and eligible for Search before it can be considered as a supporting link in an AI answer. Google’s guide to generative AI features in Search explains how those systems apply.

Eligibility is not the same as being selected. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be considered as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It also says there are no additional technical requirements for those features. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, serve, or select a page. Google’s AI Features and Your Website guidance sets out that distinction.

Make the page worth finding

The most important editorial work is to give readers something useful and distinctive, rather than repackage information they can find everywhere. Google recommends helpful, reliable, people-first content grounded in expertise or relevant experience. Its people-first content guidance describes the qualities it wants site owners to prioritize.

On 2025-05-21, John Mueller, Google Search Relations, put the advice plainly: “Focus on your visitors and provide them with unique, satisfying content.” In the same post, he wrote: “The underpinnings of what Google has long advised carries across to these new experiences.” These are Google’s recommendations, not a promise that a particular writing approach will earn an AI citation. Read Mueller’s post on Google’s Search Central Blog.

Build each page around the reader’s real task. Answer the central question directly, explain relevant qualifications, and make key information easy to locate. Do not create numerous near-duplicate pages for slight query variations merely to chase visibility. Google says there is no ideal page length: make the page as long as its audience and subject warrant, not longer to satisfy an AI feature.

Check crawlability, indexing, and page presentation

Technical eligibility is a threshold, not a ranking trick. Use this audit to find problems that could prevent Google from accessing or interpreting an otherwise useful page:

  1. Check access. Confirm that robots.txt rules, hosting, and any CDN settings do not block Googlebot from reaching the page and its important resources.
  2. Confirm the page works. Load the page and verify that it returns successfully and contains indexable content rather than an error, empty shell, or content available only after an inaccessible interaction.
  3. Inspect Google’s view. In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection to check the page’s indexing status and inspect its rendered version. Resolve access or rendering problems the report identifies.
  4. Make the page discoverable within your site. Add relevant internal links from pages Google and visitors can reach, especially for important pages that would otherwise be isolated.
  5. Keep essential information in text. Ensure that key explanations and details are available as text, rather than relying on an image, video, or interactive element alone.
  6. Align structured data with the page. Use structured data only when it accurately describes content users can see. It may support eligibility for applicable rich results, but Google does not require special AI schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Google also recommends a good page experience. For very large sites that update content frequently, its AI features guidance points to crawl-budget considerations where applicable. These checks can help Google access and process a page; they cannot ensure that it appears in an answer.

Skip unsupported Google AI-search hacks

Google does not require site owners to add llms.txt, special schema, artificially tiny content chunks, or a separate AI-only writing style for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google says it ignores llms.txt for its Search visibility and rankings. Other systems may use that file, but that is separate from Google Search.

Do not rewrite every page to sound like a chatbot or split coherent articles into arbitrary micro-sections in the hope of being quoted. Use headings and structure to help people navigate the subject. Add structured data when it is appropriate for a supported Search feature and matches visible page content—not as a special ticket into generative answers. Google’s generative AI feature guide covers these points.

Use AI tools without publishing low-value pages at scale

Generative AI can assist with research or organizing an outline, but assistance does not remove the need for a useful final page. Google’s guidance distinguishes using AI as a tool from generating many pages that add little value. Publishing scaled, low-value content may violate Google’s scaled content abuse policy. Google’s guidance on generative AI content, updated 2025-12-10, explains its position.

Keep the reader’s needs at the center of the editorial decision: review generated material for accuracy, add value that is specific to the subject, and do not publish pages simply to cover more query variants. Where a page makes claims that depend on expertise or direct experience, represent the basis for those claims accurately.

Measure visibility and value in Search Console

Use Google Search Console’s performance reporting to monitor how your site performs in Search, and investigate individual pages with URL Inspection when you suspect an access or indexing issue. Google says traffic from AI Overviews may be more engaged, and suggests looking beyond clicks at outcomes such as conversions and time spent on site. That is Google’s stated observation, not a universal result or a forecast for any particular site. Mueller discussed it in his 2025-05-21 post.

There is no general percentage or traffic benchmark in this guidance that predicts what publishers should expect from AI features. Compare your own Search visibility with the outcomes that matter to your site, and avoid treating a change in clicks alone as proof that an AI feature helped or hurt business results.
