You can delay a Windows 11 feature update without holding back routine security updates only when an administrator configures update policies to manage those update types separately. The consumer Pause updates setting delays updates generally, so use it only for a brief interruption—not as a feature-update-only switch.
First, know which kind of update you are delaying
Feature updates move Windows to a newer release. Quality updates arrive more frequently and mainly deliver fixes, including security fixes. Microsoft says supported Windows versions are required to receive monthly updates; its Windows Update FAQ explains the distinction.
That difference matters: a feature-update delay can be managed separately from quality updates on organization-managed devices, but the ordinary pause control in Settings is a broad, temporary hold.
If this is your personal PC: use Pause updates only briefly
- Check your Windows version. Open Settings > Windows Update and review the version and update status shown there.
- Pause only for a short interruption. Under Pause updates, select an end date. Microsoft’s current instructions allow a pause of up to 35 days at a time. The pause can hold quality and security updates as well as feature updates; it is not a feature-only control. See Microsoft’s Pause updates instructions.
- Resume updates when the interruption ends. After the pause expires, Windows checks for and installs available updates. Install the available quality and security updates rather than repeatedly relying on a pause to avoid a feature release.
Microsoft’s FAQ puts the limit plainly: “You can’t stop updates entirely—because they help keep your device safe and secure, updates will eventually need to be installed and downloaded, regardless of your update settings.”

If the PC is managed by work or school: ask IT to defer the feature update
An administrator can use Group Policy or mobile-device management (MDM) to control feature-update offers separately from quality updates, or target a particular feature version. These controls are intended for managed devices, not as a routine workaround for Home users.
Microsoft’s documented policy bounds are up to 365 days for feature-update deferral and up to 30 days for quality-update deferral. Those figures are maximum settings, not recommended waiting periods. Microsoft advises keeping quality-update deferrals short to minimize the time devices wait for security fixes. The policy options and their limits are documented in Windows Update client policies.

Ask your organization’s IT administrator to choose the supported feature version or deferral policy and set a short quality-update delay. Do not edit the registry or apply enterprise policy yourself as an ordinary consumer fix.
Check the support deadline before delaying a release
A delay cannot extend the security-support life of the Windows version already installed. As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 24H2 end of updates as October 13, 2026, for Home and Pro, and October 12, 2027, for Enterprise and Education. These dates are edition-specific; verify the installed edition and current lifecycle information in Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 update notice. Once a version is outside support, it no longer receives monthly security protections under that notice.

What may still update during a pause or deferral?
Update controls do not guarantee identical behavior on every PC. Microsoft says some updates—including Defender security intelligence, critical or expedited drivers, and emergency or out-of-band updates—may arrive promptly. A newer monthly-restart experience is also rolling out gradually, so it may not be available on every device. See Microsoft’s update on the monthly-restart experience.
