What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If VLC stops after a file error, first check that the next item is actually in the playlist and that playback was not explicitly stopped. VLC’s playlist API sets continuing to the next item as the default action when another item exists, but that does not guarantee every local-file, YouTube, network, or decoder error will advance reliably in every VLC release.
Check whether VLC has another item to play
- Open VLC’s playlist view and inspect the queued entries. Confirm that the intended next video appears; VLC cannot advance to an item that is not in the playlist.
- After the error, check VLC’s state. See whether playback is stopped or whether the next entry starts after a short delay. A stop command is different from a media item ending or failing.
- If the next item does not start, test it by itself. This helps distinguish an issue with that item from a playlist-advancement problem.
The VLC playlist API’s default stopped-media action is to “Continue (or stop if there is no next media), default behavior.” That describes the API’s default, not a promise that every playback error will be recovered identically in every build.
Troubleshoot a broken local video file
Verify the file and its playlist entry
- Open the file directly in VLC. If it fails there too, the problem is with opening or decoding that file, not necessarily with playlist advancement.
- Check that the file still exists at the location recorded in the playlist and that VLC is pointed to the intended copy.
- If the file works by itself but not in the playlist, remove and add that entry again, then test the playlist from an earlier item.
Do not assume a file error means you need new hardware. First establish whether the file opens independently and whether the next playlist entry is present.
Troubleshoot a YouTube live URL
If the failing playlist item is a YouTube live URL, the failure may be in VLC’s YouTube integration rather than in the playlist itself. VideoLAN notes that changes to YouTube’s transmission protocols can prevent VLC from playing some YouTube videos. Update VLC and consult VideoLAN’s current guidance for the version you have installed: VideoLAN FAQ.

The FAQ also describes replacing VLC’s youtube.lua playlist script, but those instructions are old and should not be treated as a universally reliable current fix. A contributor said on the VideoLAN developer mailing list on January 6, 2026, that the script still worked for his live streams; that is an individual report, not a compatibility guarantee. The reviewed discussion is at VideoLAN’s January 2026 developer mailing list.
What repeat and looping do after errors
A 2019 VideoLAN patch discussion addressed repeated errors under playlist repeat or loop. It describes waiting longer after consecutive failures to avoid a rapid error loop: 100 ms, 200 ms, 400 ms, 800 ms, 1.6 seconds, then 3.2 seconds for further consecutive errors. A successful playback resets the counter. Those are historical implementation details from that patch discussion, not a current user-adjustable setting or a guarantee about every VLC version: VideoLAN developer patch discussion, May 22, 2019.

Use YouTube’s player to loop a playlist
If your goal is continuous playback of a YouTube playlist and VLC’s direct-URL playback is unstable, YouTube’s own player is a practical alternative. YouTube documents how to loop a video or playlist in its player: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube. VLC’s ability to handle a direct YouTube live playlist URL and automatically advance through it can depend on the version and extraction compatibility; the reviewed documentation does not guarantee the complete workflow.

If what you need is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded videos, rather than VLC playing the live playlist on your computer, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: nothing has to stay on at home, and YouTube can keep receiving it while your computer is off. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
