To keep video playing while OBS restarts, you need a separate, already-running backup encoder or relay that can take over the YouTube live event. A reusable YouTube stream key preserves your encoder configuration; it does not keep a feed going while OBS is offline or guarantee that viewers will avoid interruption. Test the actual handoff before relying on it.
What viewers see when OBS restarts
When OBS stops sending video, the outgoing feed stops unless another independent source takes over. YouTube’s documentation does not promise a reconnect grace period, uninterrupted playback during an OBS restart, or that every setup will keep the same watch page. Viewers may see buffering or an interruption, and reopening OBS is not a guaranteed seamless recovery.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Reusing a custom key can spare you from changing encoder configuration, but it does not supply video while OBS is stopped. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Set up a backup that can take over
1. Confirm the YouTube event and encoder settings
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the event. If you need a reusable key, select or create a custom stream key and configure OBS with the intended stream URL and key. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Check the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings against your workflow. YouTube says these allow starting or stopping from the encoder; they do not create a backup feed.
2. Keep a genuinely independent backup online
Arrange a second encoder or relay that can send video without depending on the OBS process you plan to restart. A second encoder running on the same computer may fail along with OBS or the computer, so verify what it depends on. Configure the backup for the intended YouTube event and confirm that it can send a representative picture and audio feed.

3. Test the handoff before maintenance
- Run a test stream with representative motion and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the setup; YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health.
- With the backup ready, stop the primary encoder—or disconnect its Ethernet connection—and check whether the player rolls over to the backup. This is YouTube’s recommended failover test, not a guarantee that every encoder combination will behave identically. YouTube live streaming tips
- Watch the public or unlisted YouTube player from another device, preferably on a different network. Confirm what viewers actually see, including whether the picture returns on the intended event.
- Only after a successful test should you restart OBS during a live broadcast. Keep the backup running until OBS is sending a healthy feed again, then verify the viewer-facing player before retiring the backup.
Choose the right continuity approach
- One OBS process: simplest, but it cannot provide video while that process is stopped. Reconnecting with the same key is not a substitute for a backup.
- Separate local encoder: can cover an OBS restart if it continues running and can take over the intended event. It may not protect against a shared computer, power, network, or configuration failure.
- Cloud relay or managed service: can operate independently of your home OBS computer, but you still need to confirm how it hands off to the specific YouTube event and test what the player does. Do not assume continuity from a service description alone.
Troubleshoot a failed handoff
- The backup never appears: check that it is sending to the correct YouTube event and using the intended stream configuration; repeat the test while monitoring the Live Control Room preview and health messages.
- The backup feed is unstable or blank: inspect the backup encoder’s output and its audio/video sources. Test with representative content rather than assuming an encoder is ready because it is running.
- The stream drops or reports errors: inspect encoder output and YouTube dashboard messages, check CPU load, and test the outbound connection. YouTube also recommends updating encoder software. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors
- The public player does not match the preview: check it from another device or network and observe the actual rollover behavior. A healthy preview alone does not establish what viewers will experience.
End a stream deliberately
For an intentional end to an event, YouTube instructs creators to end the stream and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to its encoder setup guidance; that archive behavior is not a promise of restart recovery or continuity for a 24/7 event.
