To keep your Samsung Galaxy screen on longer, open Settings > Display > Screen timeout and choose a longer interval. For hands-free reading, turn on Keep screen on while viewing. Samsung does not document a universal switch that keeps the screen awake indefinitely for one chosen app: the timeout is limited, viewing detection works only while you are looking at the phone, and video apps may handle playback differently.
Increase the screen timeout for any app
- Open Settings > Display > Screen timeout.
- Choose a longer interval. Samsung support guidance describes selectable durations of 15 seconds to 10 minutes on some devices. If you cannot find the setting, search Settings for Screen timeout.
Screen timeout is the period of inactivity before the display turns off; it is not an app-specific control. Samsung’s cited guidance gives 10 minutes as the maximum and says the timeout cannot be disabled entirely. The available choices depend on the device and software version. Samsung sources also differ on the default: one gives 30 seconds and another 15 seconds, so check your phone rather than assuming a universal default. Samsung US explains screen timeout and viewing detection; its screen-turning-off troubleshooting guide covers the shorter duration range.
A longer timeout means the screen stays lit longer when you are not interacting with it, which uses more battery. Samsung Canada recommends one minute or less to help save power. Samsung Canada’s screen-timeout guidance also notes that the timeout cannot be disabled entirely.
Keep the display on while you are looking at it
- Search Settings for Keep screen on while viewing and switch it on.
- If search does not find it, check Settings > Display > Screen timeout or Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. The location varies by model and software.
Samsung says this feature uses the front camera to detect that you are looking at the display and keeps it active regardless of the selected timeout. On older software, it may be called Smart stay. It can work poorly in low light or when your face is not clearly visible, so it is best suited to reading or other situations where you are facing the phone. Samsung’s Galaxy screen troubleshooting guidance describes the older menu route and camera-based behavior.

For video, use the app’s full-screen player
When watching a video, switch to full-screen playback if the app offers it. Samsung Canada says full-screen video in apps such as YouTube, Netflix, or Samsung Gallery’s built-in player typically keeps the display on. This is app-specific behavior, not a guarantee: an embedded video in a browser may still time out if it is not in full-screen mode. Samsung Canada lists these video examples and limits.
Check whether an accessory is turning the screen off
If the display turns off in a way that seems connected to a case or accessory, check Settings > Advanced features > Accessories > Auto screen on and off, if that option appears on your device. Samsung says this setting is available only for certain cases or accessories. Menu availability can vary; search Settings for Auto screen on and off if the path differs. Can Modes and Routines keep the screen on for one app?
Samsung supports creating and customizing routines, but its guidance does not establish that every Galaxy model can trigger a screen-timeout change when a particular app opens. To check your device, open Settings > Modes and Routines and inspect the triggers and actions it offers. Availability and options vary by model and software, so do not assume an app-specific screen-awake routine is supported. See Samsung’s Bixby Routines setup guidance.

Samsung notes that support screenshots and menus can vary by model and software version. If a named option is missing, use Settings search with the feature name; the wording or location may differ.
