Change your laptop’s system sleep setting so the computer stays awake for the entire StreamYard broadcast. You can usually let the display turn off separately, but do not let the computer enter sleep. Then run a short test stream and confirm the broadcast stays active before your event.
Keep the computer awake, even if the screen turns off
StreamYard is a browser-based live video production and recording tool. Its setup guidance calls for a laptop or desktop, a connected microphone and camera, and a stable internet connection. If the laptop sleeps during a broadcast, change the operating system’s sleep timeout for the power condition you will use—plugged in or on battery—so the computer remains awake for the planned stream.
Sleep and display-off are separate settings on systems that expose both. It is fine to allow the display to turn off while keeping the computer awake; the key is to prevent system sleep. The exact menu path differs by operating system and version, and the reviewed StreamYard and YouTube guidance does not establish current Windows or macOS paths. Look in your system’s power or battery settings and verify the setting for the power condition you will actually use.
Do not assume closing the lid is safe. Lid behavior depends on system settings and hardware, and closing it may put the laptop to sleep.

Test the change before the event
- Set the sleep timeout so the laptop stays awake for longer than the broadcast, for the power condition you plan to use.
- Start a short test stream using the same laptop, browser, network, and power arrangement planned for the event.
- Allow the display to turn off if desired, then confirm that the computer and broadcast remain active.
- If the test works, use the same settings for the real broadcast. YouTube recommends trying a test live stream before an event; the test can be public or unlisted.
A test checks the actual setup rather than just the setting. It does not guarantee a broadcast will continue if the computer sleeps, the browser closes, the network fails, or power is lost.
If StreamYard still has trouble
- Check the connection: StreamYard says poor or unstable internet is a usual cause of blurry or laggy streams. It recommends a wired connection: “We recommend that you hardwire (Ethernet) to your router.” Ethernet can improve network stability, but it does not prevent sleep.
- Check the browser and device: StreamYard lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera as browsers that work with the service and recommends Chrome in its device guide. Its onboarding guidance recommends Chrome or Edge on desktop. Browser choice is a setup consideration, not a sleep fix.
- Isolate network or equipment problems: StreamYard’s troubleshooting guidance suggests options including trying another network or device, restarting equipment, and checking the browser.
- Retest after a change: If you adjust a power, browser, device, or network setting, run another short test rather than assuming the original test still applies.
If problems persist, work through StreamYard’s troubleshooting guidance instead of assuming sleep is the only cause. Its descriptions of what happens when internet is lost concern network interruptions, not a guarantee about what happens when a laptop sleeps.
