To keep characters consistent across Word and Excel, use Word’s symbol tools or a verified character code, and decide in Excel whether each entry is a number to format or literal text to preserve. A currency symbol applied as a number format changes how an amount looks—not its stored value or currency. Fonts, regional settings, and paste options can also change what you see.
Choose whether an Excel entry is a number or literal text
This choice determines the reliable way to handle currency and other entries that resemble numbers or dates.
For amounts used in calculations, keep the value numeric
Enter the amount as a number, then apply a currency or accounting number format. Excel uses the underlying numeric value for calculations; the format controls its display. Changing a currency symbol does not convert the amount or apply an exchange rate. See Microsoft’s number-formatting guidance.
For codes or strings that must remain exactly as entered, use Text format
If an entry should be preserved literally rather than interpreted as a date, number, or other built-in format, set the relevant cells to Text format where appropriate. Microsoft’s quick start for formatting worksheet numbers explains the option. Text is the right choice for literal strings, not amounts that need to participate as numbers in calculations.

Choose a currency display in Excel
Currency and Accounting formats are display choices, not different kinds of stored value. In Excel for the web, Currency places the symbol next to the first digit. Accounting aligns currency symbols and decimal points; the formats also differ in how they display zero and negative values. The default currency symbol can depend on regional settings, so check those settings if the displayed symbol is unexpected. Microsoft documents these distinctions for Excel for the web.
For a tailored display, Excel custom number formats can use up to four semicolon-separated sections for positive values, negative values, zero, and text. Available formats and separators can depend on language and regional settings. See Microsoft’s custom number format guidelines.

Not every font contains every character. Microsoft recommends Segoe UI Symbol as a broad symbol collection; if a symbol is missing or looks different, try a font that supports it. See Microsoft’s Word symbol instructions.
Use a code only after checking which code system it belongs to
Word supports different procedures for Unicode hexadecimal input and decimal or ASCII numeric codes. For Unicode hex, type the code and press Alt+X. Microsoft lists examples of numeric-keypad codes for Word, including £ as Alt+0163, ¥ as Alt+0165, ¢ as Alt+0162, and € as Alt+0128. These are not interchangeable code types or guaranteed universal shortcuts: keyboard and platform behavior can differ. Check Microsoft’s instructions for inserting ASCII or Unicode character codes and confirm the steps for your Word version and setup.

Control what happens when you paste between apps
Pasted content may bring formatting along with it, or inherit formatting from the destination. When the result is inconsistent, use Paste Special and select the option that matches what you need to retain—such as text or formatting. The available choices depend on the Office app and platform. Microsoft describes Paste Special options for Word; check the choices shown in your own app rather than assuming they match across Word, Excel, Windows, Mac, and the web.

If you enter the same character often, an AutoCorrect replacement can expand a memorable text shortcut into the symbol. Set it up in the Office app where you need it and verify that it works in the target app and platform: AutoCorrect features and support vary. Microsoft provides instructions for AutoCorrect in Excel and Math AutoCorrect commands and symbols in Word.

Diagnose characters that look alike but behave differently
Two characters can appear identical while having different code points. That can affect matching, sorting, or display, so verify the character itself instead of relying on appearance alone. In Excel, UNICODE(text) returns the code point for the first character in the supplied text. For example, use =UNICODE(A1) to inspect the first character in cell A1. Microsoft notes that malformed or partial surrogate data can return #VALUE!. See the UNICODE function reference. If the code point is as expected but the glyph appears wrong, check whether the selected font supports it.
