To help scrubs keep their fit and color, start with the care label on each garment. Sort lights from darks, turn scrubs inside out, close zippers, use a suitable mild detergent, and avoid unapproved bleach or fabric softener. Wash and dry only within the label’s limits; air drying or low-heat tumble drying, when permitted, reduces unnecessary heat stress. No routine can guarantee that scrubs will never fade or change shape, and workplace laundering rules take priority when hygiene requirements apply.
Start with the garment’s care label
Follow the sewn-in label for washing, bleach, drying, and ironing. The finished garment includes more than its main fabric: dyes, thread, elastic, closures, prints, and finishes can all affect what care it tolerates. UNDAMED says its recommendations are model-specific and that the product label takes priority over its general guidance (UNDAMED). Strauss U.K. Limited gives the same core advice: “Always follow the care label on the garment” (Strauss medical-apparel guidance).
Check the label before the first wash and whenever you are unsure about a setting. Do not choose a hotter wash simply because you recognize the fabric blend; the care instructions for the actual garment decide what is allowed.
Use a lower-stress washing routine
- Sort by color. Wash darks separately from lights to reduce the risk of dye transfer.
- Prepare each garment. Turn scrubs inside out and close zippers or similar fasteners. This helps protect the outer surface from friction and snagging; Landau also recommends inside-out washing to reduce pilling (Landau care tips).
- Choose a compatible detergent. Use a mild, color-safe detergent if the garment label permits it. Avoid aggressive bleach unless the label specifically allows it.
- Skip fabric softener unless approved. Softener can interfere with breathability or moisture-wicking in some medical apparel. Check the garment’s instructions before using it.
- Set the wash temperature and cycle within the label’s limits. For lightly soiled garments, a lower permitted temperature may be an option, but there is no single setting established for every scrub.
Dry with care to limit heat stress
Air dry when practical. If the label permits a tumble dryer, choose low heat rather than making high heat the default. Careletics advises cold or warm machine washing up to 104°F/40°C, washing with like colors, and tumble drying on low for the fabrics covered by its instructions. It warns that high heat can damage stretch fibers and reduce the effectiveness of a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating (Careletics fabric-care instructions). Those directions apply to the fabrics covered by Careletics, not automatically to every scrub.

Why fabric advice is not one-size-fits-all
Temperature recommendations depend on the garment, not just the fiber name. UNDAMED’s 2026 guidance gives typical ranges of 30–40°C for polyester, viscose, and elastane fabrics, including polyester or polyamide blends with elastane. It describes cotton/polyester with a small elastane share as usually washed at 40°C, and 100% cotton at 40°C, sometimes 60°C only when the care label allows it. These are manufacturer guidelines, not universal settings; UNDAMED notes that dyeing, fabric weight, construction, elastic, closures, logos, and finishes can change the care needs of otherwise similar blends (UNDAMED).
In particular, do not assume that all-cotton scrubs can tolerate a hotter wash or dryer. UNDAMED warns that 100% cotton may shrink, lose shape, and fade faster. Use the label rather than treating a general fiber recommendation as permission to increase heat.

When two garments have different instructions
Compare the labels garment by garment before combining items in one load. Check these points:
- Maximum wash temperature
- Whether bleach is allowed and any detergent restrictions
- Whether tumble drying is permitted and, if so, the heat limit
- Any special requirements for stretch fibers or performance finishes
- Whether a recommendation applies to the specific model or only to a general fabric category
If the instructions conflict, follow the more restrictive setting for a shared load or wash the garments separately. Do not transfer a rule from one scrub model to another just because they look or feel similar.

Keep workplace hygiene requirements separate
