If you own or are authorized to access the site, the reliable fix is to have its CDN or web application firewall (WAF) recognize the screenshot service and allow only the verified capture traffic and routes it needs. A screenshot renderer can capture only what its browser is allowed to load; it does not grant access. For a third-party site that challenges automation, seek permission or an official access method rather than trying to evade the controls.
Why a scheduled screenshot shows a CAPTCHA, blank page, or missing content
An empty or incorrect image does not always mean bot protection blocked the capture. Inspect the image and job logs to distinguish among a challenge page, access-denied response, login redirect, timeout, and a page that loaded before its JavaScript finished rendering. Each points to a different remedy.
- Challenge or access denied: the destination’s security policy is refusing the capture request.
- Login redirect: the page requires authentication; bot allowlisting alone will not sign in the browser.
- Timeout: the page or a required resource did not finish loading within the capture window.
- Partial or blank application: the browser may have taken the screenshot before the page rendered its expected content.
Cloudflare says its own Browser Run requests are always identified as bot traffic, and documents a WAF skip rule for a site operator’s own zone. That is specific to Browser Run, not a claim about every screenshot service. Cloudflare Browser Run FAQ
Allowlist a screenshot service safely on a site you control
1. Confirm authorization and identify the security layer
Verify that you control the destination or have permission to capture it, then identify the CDN/WAF and the exact service making the request. Use a service identity that the security provider can verify, such as a documented bot-detection field or a cryptographically signed agent request. A user-agent string by itself is copyable and is not proof of identity.

2. Create a narrow exception
Use the provider’s documented identity or bot-detection fields to scope an allow or skip rule to the capture service and the routes required for the screenshot. Keep unrelated routes, private endpoints, and other bot protections covered by the normal policy. Coordinate with the security owner if the correct rule action, plan requirement, or provider integration is unclear.
For Cloudflare Browser Run, the FAQ describes a WAF skip rule using its method-specific Bot Detection ID when scanning the operator’s own zone. Cloudflare says using Bot Management fields for this allowlisting requires Enterprise. Check the current Cloudflare Browser Run FAQ and your account’s available WAF features before implementing the rule.

3. Validate signed-agent requests correctly
For ChatGPT Work’s Cloud browser, OpenAI documents Web Bot Auth using RFC 9421 HTTP Message Signatures. Its requests include Signature, Signature-Input, and Signature-Agent: "https://chatgpt.com". A site operator can validate the signature against OpenAI’s published key directory and use the provider-specific integration guidance for Akamai, Cloudflare, HUMAN, or Vercel. Ensure intermediary proxies preserve the signature headers; do not trust the agent label or a copied user-agent string alone. Provider labels and integration instructions can change, so verify the current OpenAI allowlisting instructions.
Capture pages that legitimately require a login
Authentication is separate from bot allowlisting. If the scheduled capture is authorized to access a protected page, configure the capture service’s supported authentication mechanism and limit the credentials to the pages and access required. Store secrets in the scheduler’s secret store or equivalent protected configuration, not in a public URL, source repository, or screenshot output.

Cloudflare Browser Run documents cookies, HTTP Basic Auth, and an authorization header for pages the user may access. Choose the method supported by your capture service and follow its current endpoint documentation; Cloudflare’s options are described in its screenshot endpoint documentation.
Wait for the page to render before taking the image
A browser can finish its initial navigation before a JavaScript-heavy page has displayed the content you expect. Cloudflare documents domcontentloaded as the default navigation wait; that event can occur before application rendering is complete. Set an appropriate navigation wait with the documented gotoOptions, then wait for a page-specific ready condition when possible—for example, a selector that appears only after the relevant content is rendered. Choose the capture interface for the job
The simplest interface that meets the workload is usually easiest to secure and maintain. Cloudflare recommends Quick Actions for simple, stateless screenshot, PDF, or scrape tasks; browser sessions controlled with Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP are suited to more complex scripting and browser control. - One-off or straightforward scheduled capture: prefer a stateless screenshot endpoint when it supports the required URL, authentication, and rendering wait.
- Interactive or multi-step workflow: use a controlled browser session when the page needs scripting or additional browser actions.
- Batch work: account for concurrency, rate limits, asynchronous job handling, and the site’s permitted request volume.
Test and monitor before relying on the schedule
- Run one capture against an authorized URL and inspect the image and job logs.
- Confirm the capture shows the expected page rather than a challenge, denial, login redirect, timeout, or partially rendered state.
- If the site is yours, verify the narrowly scoped WAF rule matches the documented service identity and required routes, while other protections remain in place.
- Confirm credentials are scoped and secret, and that the browser waits for the page’s actual ready condition.
- Enable the schedule and monitor challenge rate, authentication failures, render failures, and security-rule changes. Coordinate with the security owner if the policy or integration changes.

Changing a browser fingerprint or rotating IPs is not a reliable substitute for authorization. Cloudflare says Browser Run does not offer per-request IP rotation; its documented approach for an operator scanning their own zone is a WAF rule based on the service’s Bot Detection ID.
