Keep API keys out of source code, URLs, logs, and published packages; load them from protected deployment configuration and send them only to trusted HTTPS endpoints. To prevent server-side request forgery (SSRF), prefer fixed destinations or strict allowlists. If your Node.js app fetches user-supplied URLs, validate the scheme, hostname, resolved IP addresses, and every redirect—and restrict outbound network access as an additional safeguard.
The available guidance covers Node.js secrets and outbound-request security generally; it does not identify “Reflection” as a specific product or protocol. Check any provider-specific authentication and endpoint requirements against that provider’s documentation.
How do I keep API keys secure in Node.js?
Use a secret supplied by your deployment environment rather than embedding it in application code. Node.js exposes environment variables through process.env; its documentation also describes .env support. An environment variable is a way to provide configuration, not by itself a guarantee that a secret is safely stored or accessible only to authorized people. See the Node.js environment variables documentation.
Load required secrets without exposing their values
For example, read a required credential from process.env.REFLECTION_API_KEY and stop startup with a clear error if it is missing. Report that the variable is absent, but never print its value.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
const apiKey = process.env.REFLECTION_API_KEY;
if (!apiKey) {
throw new Error("Missing required configuration: REFLECTION_API_KEY");
}
Set the value through the deployment platform’s protected configuration or secret-injection mechanism. A local .env file can be convenient during development, but it must be protected like a secret and must not be treated as a production secret manager.
Keep secrets out of commits and published packages
- Add local secret files such as
.envto.gitignore, and verify they are not already tracked. - Review
.npmignoreand.gitignorebefore publishing. Exclusion from one process does not guarantee exclusion from another. - Inspect the generated package contents before publication so credentials and local configuration are not included. OWASP’s Secrets Management Cheat Sheet discusses the risks of secrets appearing in files and packages.
Where should an API key go in an outbound request?
Do not put API keys, passwords, or tokens in a URL’s query string or path. URLs are commonly recorded in server logs and other observability systems. OWASP’s REST Security Cheat Sheet warns that credentials in URLs can be captured in web server logs.

Use the authentication format required by the API provider—often an authorization header or a provider-specific header. Do not assume all services use the same header name or scheme. For GET requests, place credentials in the required header rather than the URL; for POST or PUT, use a header or request body as the provider specifies. A body is not a substitute for checking what the provider supports, and it should not contain credentials unless that is the documented authentication method.
Use HTTPS for requests carrying credentials. Apply rate limits to exposed operations, keep a procedure for revoking and replacing compromised keys, and use appropriate authorization for valuable actions. An API key is one control, not a complete authorization system.

How do I stop SSRF when my Node.js app fetches a user-provided URL?
SSRF happens when an application makes a server-side request to a destination an attacker can influence. OWASP describes the risk in API Security Top 10: API7:2023: “SSRF flaws occur when an API is fetching a remote resource without validating the user-supplied URL.”
The safest design is to avoid arbitrary destinations. If the feature needs only a known external service, configure that destination in the application or allowlist the permitted hosts and ports. When users genuinely need to submit URLs, treat validation as a set of layers rather than a single string check.

Validate the URL and its destination
- Parse input with Node.js’s WHATWG
URLAPI or another maintained URL parser; do not rely on ad hoc string matching. - Allow only the HTTP or HTTPS schemes the feature requires, and reject embedded usernames or passwords.
- Restrict permitted hostnames and ports wherever the use case allows. A hostname allowlist is preferable when destinations are known in advance.
- Resolve hostnames and check the resulting IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. Reject loopback, private, link-local, and other internal destinations rather than validating only the hostname text.
- Account for DNS changes and rebinding: validation must apply to the address actually used for the connection, not merely an earlier lookup.
OWASP’s Server Side Request Forgery Prevention Cheat Sheet covers layered SSRF defenses. A blocklist alone is not a complete defense because destination representations and network behavior can vary.
Control redirects and outbound network access
A request to an allowed URL can redirect to a disallowed destination. Disable automatic redirects when the HTTP client permits it, or validate every redirect target using the same scheme, hostname, port, and resolved-address checks before following it. The exact controls depend on the HTTP client and its DNS and redirect behavior.

Use network-level egress restrictions as another layer: where feasible, prevent the service from reaching internal systems or sensitive metadata endpoints it does not need. Do not return raw upstream responses or secrets to the caller. Set timeouts and response-size limits appropriate to the feature; there is no universal value established for every application.

| Design | Destination control | DNS and redirects | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed external service | Configure a known host and required port; use HTTPS where supported. | Keep the request target fixed. Disable redirects or constrain and validate them if needed. | The application calls a specific provider or a small known set of services. |
| User-supplied URL with an allowlist | Accept only approved hosts and required ports. | Check resolved IPv4 and IPv6 addresses; validate each redirect or disable redirects. | Users need some choice, but the application can limit destinations. |
| Arbitrary user-supplied URL | Allow only required HTTP(S) schemes; reject embedded credentials and local, private, or link-local destinations. A blocklist alone is insufficient. | Validate the actual resolved addresses and every redirect; add outbound network restrictions. | Only when arbitrary fetching is an essential feature and the application can enforce layered controls. |
This comparison describes security properties to implement, not guarantees supplied automatically by a particular Node.js HTTP client. Verify behavior for the runtime, client, DNS resolution, and deployment network you use.
What to check before deployment
- Required secrets come from protected deployment configuration, and startup fails clearly if one is missing.
- Secret values do not appear in source control, package contents, request URLs, application logs, or error responses.
- Requests use HTTPS and the provider’s documented authentication format.
- Fixed destinations are configured or allowlisted; user-provided URLs receive scheme, credential, hostname, port, DNS-address, and redirect checks.
- Outbound network access is limited where practical, and exposed operations have rate limits and suitable authorization.
- There is a process to revoke and replace keys if they are exposed.
Node.js also documents a permission model that may help limit what a process can access. Its suitability depends on runtime-version support and deployment needs; it does not replace careful secret handling or SSRF defenses. See the Node.js permissions documentation.
