To stop clipping on a YouTube Live radio stream, find the first point in the audio chain that is overloading and lower its gain. Check the radio player or automation output, mixer, audio interface, and OBS sources while the loudest expected material is playing. Keep the final mix below 0 dBFS, then use OBS’s Limiter filter as a last-stage safety net—not as a repair for distortion that has already happened upstream.

What clipping is—and where to look first

Digital clipping occurs when the signal exceeds the system’s maximum digital level, 0 dBFS. The result can sound harsh or distorted in the stream or recording. OBS’s guidance is to keep streamed and recorded audio below that ceiling. The important diagnostic question is not just whether the final OBS meter is high, but where the signal first becomes excessive. OBS explains its audio meter and gain stages.

A typical radio-to-YouTube path may include automation or a player, a mixer, an audio interface, audio sources and filters in OBS, and the final stream mix. A low final fader cannot undo distortion introduced by an overloaded player output or interface input.

Trace and correct the audio chain

  1. Play representative material. Include the loudest music, station IDs, transitions, and any live microphone segment. Listen for distortion and watch levels throughout the chain; a quiet song alone is not a sufficient test.
  2. Check the earliest output. Inspect the radio player or automation output, mixer channel and master controls, and audio-interface input gain. If a stage is already distorted or overloaded, lower its output or input gain before the signal reaches the next stage. Mixer and interface controls vary, so consult the device manual for their specific meters and controls.
  3. Inspect OBS source levels and filters. Watch the relevant source meters and the final mix while the loudest material plays. Check source faders and filters for added gain. OBS notes that its input-level indicator is after filters; if you need to distinguish an incoming-level problem from a filter problem, temporarily disable filters and inspect the level again. See the OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details and OBS Filters Guide.
  4. Lower the first overloaded stage. Reduce gain where the signal first becomes excessive, rather than simply turning down a later stage. OBS notes that its PPM may indicate a peak 3 dB higher than the displayed reading, so a meter that appears just below the ceiling does not provide much safety margin.
  5. Recheck the full path. Play the same loud passages after each adjustment and confirm that the sound is clean in the final OBS mix and in a test output or local recording, if available.

Use OBS’s limiter as a safety net

OBS’s Limiter filter is designed to prevent peaks from exceeding its threshold and causing clipping or distortion. Add it to the relevant output or source filter chain as appropriate, and place it last in that chain. OBS documents a default threshold of -6.00 dB and release of 60 ms; these are software defaults, not a universal radio loudness target. See OBS’s Limiter Filter documentation.

A limiter can catch peaks that reach it, but it cannot restore audio that clipped in the radio player, mixer, interface, or an earlier software stage. If it engages constantly, lower the upstream gain and listen again; repeated gain reduction can become audible. The limiter is a safeguard, not a substitute for sound gain staging.

Set YouTube audio delivery separately

For stereo audio using YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, the supported audio codecs are AAC or MP3, with a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps stereo audio bitrate. These are delivery and compatibility settings, not clipping controls. Changing codec, bitrate, or sample rate will not repair distortion already present in the signal. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings and the encoder’s current status messages during setup.

Preflight and monitor the live stream

  1. Test the actual routing. Before the broadcast, run a test using the same sources, audio routing, and similar program material—including the loudest expected segment. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the event.
  2. Compare available outputs. Listen to the encoder output and a local archive or recording if available. If both are distorted, investigate the source, routing, and gain stages. If the local or encoder audio is clean but playback is not, check stream health and the outbound or platform path.
  3. Keep monitoring during the broadcast. Watch stream health and listen at transitions, live microphone handoffs, and other high-level moments. YouTube recommends ongoing monitoring; a clean preflight does not guarantee every later segment is clean.

For platform-side diagnosis, follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and streaming tips.

Common clipping problems and fixes

What you notice Likely cause What to check or change
Distortion is present in OBS and a local recording An upstream source, mixer, interface, or software stage may already be overloaded. Trace the signal from the radio output forward; lower gain at the first overloaded stage and retest.
A source sounds clean alone but the final mix distorts Multiple sources or added filter/fader gain may be pushing the combined mix too high. Inspect each source and the final mix during the loudest passage; check filters and faders for added gain.
The limiter reduces gain often or the sound pumps The signal is reaching the limiter too aggressively or too frequently. Reduce upstream gain and retest. Keep the limiter last, and do not rely on it to correct earlier clipping.
The OBS or local output is clean, but YouTube playback sounds wrong The issue may be in the outbound connection, stream health, or platform path rather than source clipping. Compare encoder output and archive if available, then check YouTube’s stream health and troubleshooting guidance.
The stream has audio compatibility or ingest warnings The encoder’s audio codec or format may not match YouTube’s documented guidance. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS, check AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz, and 128 Kbps; do not expect these settings to fix clipping.
