To make a phone last longer while you play, start by lowering screen brightness and using Wi-Fi instead of cellular data when the game needs an internet connection. If that is not enough, try your phone’s battery-saving mode, reduce graphics or frame rate if the game offers those controls, and keep the device cool. The right settings depend on your phone, operating-system version, and game.
Why a puzzle game can use more battery than expected
Battery use is not determined by a game’s label. A puzzle game may keep the display bright, animate frequently, run ads, use network access, or leave the screen awake while you step away. Phone age and battery condition also affect how long a charge lasts. Google lists graphics-heavy and highly interactive games among activities that can use battery, but its guidance does not provide a drain rate for puzzle games specifically (Google Android Help).
The display is an important place to start: Apple says high brightness uses substantial energy, though the amount saved by dimming varies with the display and viewing conditions (Apple Support).
Try the changes that preserve the most convenience first
Dim the screen to a comfortable level
Lower brightness until the board remains easy to read, rather than making the screen uncomfortably dim. On iPhone or iPad, you can also use Auto-Brightness if it suits your surroundings. Apple’s battery guidance recommends reducing brightness or using Auto-Brightness; it does not promise a fixed amount of extra play time (Apple battery guidance).

Choose Wi-Fi when the game needs data
If the game requires an internet connection and reliable Wi-Fi is available, use it instead of cellular data. Apple and Google both recommend Wi-Fi as a lower-power choice for data access. A weak cellular signal can also contribute to battery use (Apple battery guidance; Google Android Help).
Airplane mode is appropriate only if you do not need mobile network access and the game works offline. It can prevent online play, ads, synchronization, or other network-dependent features.
Pause when you step away
Pause or exit the game if you will not be playing for a while, and let the screen lock normally. Apple’s archived developer guidance describes how a game can keep a display awake after the player stops interacting, which drains battery; that page was updated in 2014, so it establishes the mechanism rather than how current games behave (Apple Developer archived guidance).
Use battery-saving mode when you need more time
iPhone and iPad
On current Apple support guidance, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode to find Low Power Mode; Control Center may also provide access. Menu labels can differ by operating-system release. Low Power Mode reduces or disables selected features, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. Those changes can affect how background activity and other features behave while enabled (Apple Support).

If you want to limit background refresh separately, look under Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Adaptive Power requires iOS 26 or later, and Apple limits eligibility to specified devices; check Apple’s current support page rather than assuming the option is available on every iPhone (Apple Support).
Android phones
Look under Settings > Battery for Battery Saver. The exact path and name vary by manufacturer and Android version. Battery Saver can limit background activity and may enable Dark theme; Google warns that visual effects, connectivity, features, or apps may be delayed or limited (Google Android Help).
Use it when extra runtime matters more than uninterrupted background activity. Depending on the phone, notifications or app updates may arrive later, and an online game may be affected by restricted connectivity.
Adjust the game’s workload if its controls allow it
Reduce graphics or frame rate
Check the game’s settings for options such as lower graphics quality, reduced animation, or a frame-rate limit. These controls are not available in every puzzle game. Lowering the frame rate can make motion less smooth, so choose a setting that remains comfortable to play.

On Android devices that expose refresh-rate controls, matching the display refresh rate to the game’s target frame rate can avoid powering the display faster than the game can use. Android Developers says a refresh rate above the game’s target provides no benefit and increases power use; the control depends on the device and game (Android Developers).
Look for a battery-focused Game Mode
Some Android devices offer a Game Mode preference that trades performance for battery life. Availability and behavior depend on the phone’s implementation, and the game must support the relevant configuration. If you see such a control, try its battery-oriented setting and check whether the game still responds smoothly (Android Developers).

Dark artwork can reduce display power on OLED screens because darker pixels use less power. At Apple’s WWDC22 session, Software Power engineer Vaibhav Gautam said: “On devices with OLED displays, like iPhone 13 and 13 Pro, darker content consumes less power than lighter content.” In the presentation, Apple described up to 70% display-power savings for a particular darker version of its Food Truck app example on OLED—not a 70% reduction in total phone battery drain (Apple Developer WWDC22).
A dark theme is not guaranteed to help. LCD screens do not save power in the same way, and a game with bright or fixed artwork may gain little or nothing. Treat dark mode as a useful option when the phone has an OLED display and the game supports a genuinely darker presentation, not as a substitute for reducing brightness.

Keep the phone cool
Heat reduces power efficiency, and high CPU or GPU use can lead a phone to throttle performance. If the device feels hot during play, lower the game’s workload if possible, stop playing for a while, and let it cool. Android Developers explains the connection between heat, efficiency, and thermal throttling (Android Developers).
Find out whether the game or the battery is the problem
Check app-level battery use
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Battery to see the share of battery used by each app. Android phones generally show battery use under Settings > Battery, though the labels and detail vary by manufacturer. Look for whether the game accounts for unusually high use relative to how long you played, rather than assuming every drain is caused by the game.
Allow for post-update activity
Apple says background tasks after an iOS update can affect battery life and thermal performance for a few days. If the drain began just after an update, check again after that period before concluding the game or battery has developed a lasting problem (Apple Support).
Check battery health if runtime is poor across apps
If the phone loses charge quickly even when you are not playing, inspect its battery-health information. Apple says to consider service if Battery Health reports Service (Apple Support). A battery-service decision depends on the phone’s condition and remaining usefulness; battery-saving settings cannot restore worn battery capacity.
