To keep a YouTube podcast’s episodes in the intended order, set the podcast’s Default Video Order in YouTube Studio. Choose newest to oldest for an episodic show whose episodes can be watched independently, or oldest to newest for a serial show listeners should follow from the beginning. Save the setting, then check the displayed order.
YouTube’s help materials describe a podcast as a playlist of episode videos; they do not define “live playlist” as a podcast feature. This guide covers a podcast playlist that you update with new episodes. If you mean a playlist used during an actual livestream, the guidance below does not establish how its ordering behaves.
Choose the order that fits the show
Decide how someone should start listening before changing the setting. YouTube’s podcast guidance distinguishes between two formats:

These are YouTube’s recommendations for podcasts and Shows. Choose based on how the audience should consume the program, not simply on which episode you uploaded most recently.

Set the podcast’s default video order
- Decide whether the podcast is episodic or serial, and note the order you want listeners to see.
- In YouTube Studio, open Content → Podcasts.
- Open the podcast you want to edit.
- Find Default Video Order, select the option that matches the intended order, and save.
- Check the podcast playlist display to confirm that the episodes appear in the right sequence.
Studio labels and feature availability can change, so check the current screen if the path or wording differs.
Check episode numbers if the channel uses YouTube Shows
For YouTube Shows, manually setting the playlist order determines assigned episode numbers. If you do not manually order the episodes, YouTube assigns numbers by publication date from oldest to newest. Changing or deleting an episode’s number or season can also update numbers on other episodes automatically.

- After changing the order, inspect the season and episode numbers across the show.
- After changing or deleting an individual number or season, review the other episodes too.
Keep podcast episodes separate from clips and Shorts
YouTube describes a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos. Use that podcast playlist for full-length episodes rather than turning separate season or clips playlists into podcasts. Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music, according to YouTube’s podcast setup guidance.
An MP3 file alone cannot be a YouTube podcast episode: the episode needs to be represented by a video.

If this is an ordinary playlist instead
If you are arranging a regular YouTube playlist rather than a podcast, use the playlist’s saved editing workflow in Studio. On a computer, playlist creation includes a video arrangement choice, and you can reorder videos in the playlist by dragging them up or down.
Dragging items in the playlist panel on a watch page is a temporary viewer-side reorder. Do not rely on that change to save the intended order for the channel.

Keep the order consistent as new episodes arrive
- Keep a simple record of the intended sequence, especially if the show is serial or has seasons.
- After adding a batch of episodes, revisit the podcast’s saved order and check the visible sequence.
- If the channel uses YouTube Shows, review episode and season numbers after order changes.
This is a useful editorial check when publishing regularly; it does not assume YouTube will apply one particular ordering to every later upload.
