To keep podcast audio consistent on a YouTube live stream, set clean microphone levels at the source, balance each input in your streaming software, use gentle compression for uneven speech, and put a limiter last to catch peaks. Then record or run an unlisted test with representative audio and listen back before the real show. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies technical audio settings, but it does not set an integrated loudness target for live streams.

Why levels vary—and what to control

A podcast mix may include a host microphone, guests, remote callers, music and alerts. Each can arrive at a different level. The goal is intelligible, even speech without clipping, while background elements remain subordinate. Work through the signal chain from source to software to stream: later processing cannot undo distortion or noise introduced earlier.

Set microphone gain before adjusting software faders

Start with the microphone, audio interface or mixer. Set its input gain while speaking at the distance and volume you expect to use on air; keep that distance consistent. If the source is too quiet or already distorting, a software fader or compressor is not a clean fix. OBS recommends setting gain at the device first, then checking the signal in OBS (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).

Choose the input arrangement that suits the show. A built-in microphone may be enough for a single host, while multiple microphones or separately controlled callers may call for an interface or mixer. YouTube’s live-streaming guide notes microphones, preamps and mixers among possible equipment for more advanced setups (YouTube: Get started with live streaming). Extra hardware is useful only when it solves a real need, such as independent input gain or separate source control.

Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.

Balance speech, music and guests in OBS

Adjust the microphone, music, alerts and caller inputs independently before changing the master output. In OBS, the main mixer bar indicates peak level—the peak volume the viewer will hear—while its smaller moving marker is a VU-style indicator that reflects level over a short averaging interval. Neither is an integrated loudness meter. OBS describes speech as reaching the upper yellow region, with background music and alerts kept in green; use those regions as practical visual guidance, then confirm by listening (OBS Audio Mixer Guide; OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details).

Digital audio should stay below 0 dBFS: reaching or exceeding that ceiling can clip and distort. OBS’s meter documentation also describes a -20 dBFS alignment level and a -9 dBFS permitted maximum meter level; these explain OBS meter conventions, not a universal speech target (OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details). Watch the peak-hold indication for unusually loud moments, but remember that meters cannot reveal every problem, including room echo, harshness or a stereo channel wired incorrectly.

Use compression for uneven speech, then limit peaks

Compress only as much as needed

If the host’s normal speech and louder moments differ too much, add a compressor to the speech input. OBS’s compressor lowers signal above a threshold and offers threshold, ratio, attack, release and output-gain controls (OBS Compressor Filter). Begin gently and adjust while listening: the appropriate threshold depends on the speaker and the level arriving from the source. Too much compression can make speech sound unnatural, and output gain should not push the signal into clipping.

Compression cannot repair clipping that happened before it, a noisy room, poor microphone placement or a disconnected input. Address those at the source instead.

Put the limiter last

Add a limiter after other filters so it acts as the final peak guard. OBS explicitly says a limiter should be the last filter in the chain. Its default threshold is -6 dB, but that is a software default, not a universal target; select a ceiling that leaves practical headroom and verify it by listening (OBS Limiter Filter).

Record and test the mix before going live

  1. Rehearse the real format. Include ordinary speech, the loudest likely moments, guest interruptions, music transitions and remote callers. A test with only a quiet monologue may miss the level changes that matter.
  2. Record a normal session in OBS. Listen back on headphones or speakers at a reasonable playback level. Check for clipped words, speech that disappears under music, abrupt changes between speakers, echo and channel imbalance. OBS recommends recording and listening before going live (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).
  3. Run an unlisted YouTube test when practical. Check the YouTube preview or playback on a second device, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing with audio representative of the real stream before starting the public broadcast (YouTube live encoder settings and testing).
  4. Monitor during the show. Watch for peak warnings and listen for problems that meters cannot show. If levels change, identify the source input first rather than compensating blindly on the master.

Audio settings and loudness targets: what the numbers mean

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance accessed in 2026 lists 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate and 128 kbps stereo audio bitrate. These are encoder settings, not loudness targets (YouTube live encoder settings and testing).

The Audio Engineering Society’s 2021 TD1008 recommends -18 LUFS for speech and -16 LUFS for music when normalized separately for internet audio streaming. It also gives distribution integrated-loudness examples of -18 LUFS for news/talk, -17 LUFS for mixed format and -16 LUFS for pop music. These are AES recommendations for internet audio and on-demand distribution, not YouTube Live requirements (AES TD1008). YouTube’s reviewed encoder guidance does not specify an integrated loudness target, so do not treat -14 LUFS—or any other LUFS figure—as an official YouTube live requirement.

Troubleshoot common level problems

  • Speech is quiet, but peaks are already high: Check microphone distance, source gain and loudness variation. A compressor can reduce the gap between ordinary and loud speech, but do not raise the master until the peak risk is understood.
  • Speech distorts even with a limiter: Reduce gain at the microphone, interface or mixer. Distortion introduced before the limiter cannot be repaired downstream.
  • Music or alerts compete with speech: Lower those inputs independently in the mixer rather than lowering the speech source or relying on the master fader.
  • One guest is much louder or quieter: Balance that input separately. If its level changes during conversation, moderate compression may help, but first confirm the guest’s source gain and microphone position.
  • The meters look acceptable, but the stream sounds wrong: Listen to a recording or the YouTube preview. Meters do not identify echo, harshness, poor mic technique or every stereo-routing issue.
  • The limiter is constantly working: Revisit source gain and compression. A limiter is a last-resort ceiling, not a replacement for a balanced mix.
