Yes—downloaded digital games can usually be played without Wi‑Fi, but only after the console has registered your purchase for offline use. Before disconnecting, finish the download, sign in to the account that bought the game, and enable the platform’s offline entitlement: Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5, a primary PS4 on PS4, a Home console on Xbox, or a loaded virtual game card on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. Subscriptions, cloud streaming, online-only gameplay and some multi-console arrangements still require an internet connection.

How digital ownership works when the console is offline

A digital purchase is checked in two ways. The platform records that your account owns the software, and it records which console is allowed to use that entitlement without contacting the service each time. Downloading the files alone does not always complete the second step. If the console was never activated for offline use, a game can show a padlock or ask you to connect even though the installation is complete.

Offline authorization is normally tied to one designated console. Other profiles on that same console may benefit from the device license, while the purchasing account can often use its personal license on another console when online. Changing the designated console, using a roaming console, or relying on a subscription can therefore change what works after you disconnect.

Prepare every console before going offline

Do this while you still have a reliable connection. The order matters because a setting cannot be changed and a missing license cannot be repaired once the console is already offline.

  1. Sign in to the purchasing account. Use the PlayStation account, Microsoft account or Nintendo Account that paid for the game. A different profile may be able to play later, but the owner’s account must first register the entitlement.
  2. Complete the download and installation. Start the game once while online if practical. Check the console’s download queue and storage screen; a title that is still installing, unpacking or applying an update is not ready for an offline test.
  3. Apply the platform-specific offline setting. Follow the PS5, PS4, Xbox or Switch instructions below. Do this for each console that is expected to work without a connection.
  4. Verify subscriptions. A game obtained through PlayStation Plus, Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online is not the same as a permanently purchased title. Confirm that the membership is active and that the title remains included.
  5. Update before disconnecting. Install available system software and game updates, then check the platform’s service status. A service outage or pending system update can look like a local license failure.
  6. Test deliberately. Put the console in offline mode, or disconnect it after all downloads finish, and launch the game from the profile that will use it. Fix any prompt now rather than assuming it will disappear later.

PlayStation 5: enable Console Sharing and Offline Play

Set up the purchasing account

  1. Sign in on the PS5 with the account that purchased the game.
  2. Download and install the complete game while online.
  3. Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
  4. Choose Enable.
  5. Launch the installed game once, then disconnect the PS5 and try it again.

Sony’s support wording is explicit: “Play your games and media even when the console is offline.” With Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play the purchased and downloaded games covered by the setting, not only the purchasing profile.

Understand the one-PS5 limit

The setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time for an account. Enabling it on another PS5 moves the offline-sharing privilege there; it does not create an unlimited offline copy of the account’s entitlement. The account owner can still sign in elsewhere, but the other console may need an online license check.

What a PS5 padlock means

A padlock usually means the console cannot currently validate the license, not that the installed files are necessarily damaged. While online, work through these checks in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the signed-in profile is the account that bought the game, or that the game is covered by an active PlayStation Plus entitlement.
  • Check that the PS5 has the latest system software.
  • Re-open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and ensure it is enabled.
  • Check PlayStation service status; an outage can prevent a valid purchase from being verified.
  • Use the console’s Restore Licenses command, then restart the PS5 and test the game again.

PlayStation 4: activate the primary PS4

Register the console

  1. Sign in with the account that purchased the game.
  2. Download and install the title while connected.
  3. Activate that console as the account’s primary PS4 using the account-management settings.
  4. Start the game once online, disconnect the network and test it.

Primary-PS4 activation is the PS4 equivalent of PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play. It attaches the purchasing account’s device entitlement to one PS4 so downloaded purchases can be used without a live license check. Other profiles on the primary PS4 can use eligible purchased content.

Repair a PS4 lock or missing game

  • Sign in to the purchasing account and verify the title appears in its library.
  • Confirm PlayStation Plus is active if the game came from that membership rather than a separate purchase.
  • Check for system updates and PlayStation service interruptions.
  • Confirm the PS4 is still activated as the account’s primary console.
  • Run Restore Licenses, restart, and try the title again.

If the account recently made another PS4 primary, the former console may lose its offline device entitlement until it is activated again. The game data can remain installed while the authorization changes.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S: use a Home console

Attach the device license

  1. Sign in on the Xbox with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
  2. Download the complete title and let installation finish while online.
  3. Designate that Xbox as your Home console in the console’s personalization settings.
  4. Launch the game once online, then disconnect and test it from the owner profile and any other profile that should have access.

Microsoft describes two licenses for a digital download: a device-based license and a user-based license. The device license attaches automatically to the Home console. Microsoft’s rule is: “You can designate one console (excluding a cloud-based variant used for game streaming) as your ‘Home’ console, and the device license automatically attaches to it.”

Who can play on an Xbox Home console?

Other users can play content covered by the Home-console device license, including when the console is offline, provided the title itself does not require online service. The account owner can use the user license on a different, roaming console, but that use follows Microsoft’s sign-in and one-console-at-a-time rules. A roaming console generally needs the owner’s account signed in and an internet connection to validate the user license.

Game Pass and other subscription limits

A Game Pass installation is available offline only while the subscription is active and the title remains covered by the applicable Game Pass rules. If the membership expires or the game leaves the catalog, the installed files do not turn into a permanent purchase. Connect while the subscription is active so the console can refresh its entitlement before a trip.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: load the virtual game card

Make the title available offline

  1. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that purchased the software.
  2. Download the game completely to the console or an installed microSD card.
  3. Open the virtual game card area and load the purchased title on the console you will use offline.
  4. Start the game once online, then disconnect and launch it again.

Nintendo states: “You can load the virtual game card on this console to play the software without an Internet connection.” Loading the virtual game card is the key step; merely having the software icon or downloaded data on the system is not sufficient in every multi-console arrangement.

Using more than two consoles

Nintendo’s Online License Settings can let an account use downloaded content on more than two consoles. The trade-off is an online check when starting a game that is not loaded as a virtual game card. If you expect no connection, load the virtual game card on the specific console before leaving home.

Switch software that still needs the internet

Membership checks for Nintendo Switch Online and games that are inherently online or cloud-based still require a connection. A virtual game card grants offline access to eligible software; it cannot turn an online service into an offline one.

Games that will not become offline games

  • Cloud-streamed games: The game runs on a remote server, so the console must maintain an internet connection.
  • Online-only gameplay: A title that requires its own servers for matchmaking, authentication or core simulation cannot be converted to offline play by a console setting.
  • Expired or removed subscription access: PlayStation Plus, Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online access depends on an active membership and the service’s catalog or verification rules.
  • Unloaded Switch licenses: With Online License Settings, a downloaded title that is not loaded as a virtual game card can require internet when it starts.
  • Xbox roaming use without validation: A non-Home Xbox may need the purchasing account online to use its user license.

Troubleshoot an offline launch failure

The game is still downloading

Reconnect, open the download queue and wait for installation, updates and any required content packs to finish. A home screen icon does not prove that the entire game is installed.

The console shows a padlock or asks for ownership

Reconnect and sign in to the purchasing account. Verify the subscription if the title was claimed through a catalog. Then reapply the platform setting: enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5, activate the primary PS4, set the Xbox as Home, or load the Switch virtual game card. On PlayStation, finish with Restore Licenses.

Another profile cannot start the game

Check that the profile is using the designated console, not a second console that only has the game files. PS5 sharing, primary-PS4 activation and an Xbox Home console are specifically the device-level mechanisms that extend access to other users. On Switch, verify that the virtual game card is loaded on that console.

The game worked yesterday but not today

Check whether a PlayStation Plus, Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online membership expired, or whether a subscription title left its catalog. Also check platform service status and system updates. If the account changed its designated console, restore the offline setting on the console you are carrying.

You are leaving with two consoles

Choose which device will be the offline device before disconnecting. PS5 allows Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5; Xbox has one Home console; and Nintendo’s additional-console option can require a startup connection unless the virtual game card is loaded. Download and test the titles on the chosen device rather than assuming a second installation has the same offline rights.

A practical pre-trip checklist

  • Every game is fully installed, including updates needed for its first launch.
  • The purchasing account can sign in and the title appears in its library.
  • PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, or the PS4 is activated as primary.
  • The intended Xbox is set as the owner’s Home console.
  • The intended Switch or Switch 2 has the virtual game card loaded.
  • Subscription memberships are active and the games remain eligible.
  • System software is current and platform service status is normal.
  • A real offline launch test succeeds before the network is removed.

Once those checks pass, the downloaded files and the console’s device-level entitlement can work together without Wi‑Fi. The remaining limitation is the game’s own design: software that depends on a remote server, cloud streaming or a live membership still needs the internet even when its files are stored locally.
