Game Pass provides access while a game is in the library; downloading it does not mean you own it. Check the game’s current store listing for the right platform and edition, its price, and whether it is still available to buy.
What happens when a game leaves Game Pass?
Your access to a Game Pass game ends when it leaves the library, even if it is still installed on your console or PC. Xbox describes membership access as lasting until your subscription expires or the game leaves the library: Xbox Game Pass.
How to keep playing the game
- Check the departure announcement. Xbox says it confirms departing titles in regular Xbox Wire posts and mobile notifications. The announcement can help you plan, but Xbox does not establish one fixed notice period for every game.
- Open the game’s store listing. Confirm that you are looking at the version for your platform—such as Xbox console or Windows PC—and the edition you want. Availability and editions can differ, so do not assume one purchase covers every platform.
- Compare the displayed price and discount. Xbox Wire advises members to use the Game Pass member discount to buy an exiting game before it leaves. The guidance is from November 17, 2020; it does not establish a current discount percentage or guarantee that a particular title is discounted. Check the offer shown for your account and region.
- Buy the game before it leaves if you want uninterrupted access. After removal, check the current listing: the game may or may not remain available to purchase. A purchase is for the specific game and platform edition shown, not a general license to every version.
Xbox Wire’s guidance on departure notices and buying an exiting title is available in its November 17, 2020 Game Pass update.
Do add-ons let you keep the game?
No—not by themselves, at least for the Dovetail Games titles covered by its support guidance. Dovetail says players who bought add-ons still need to purchase the base game to continue playing after it leaves Game Pass. That statement is specific to Dovetail titles; check the publisher’s support information for the game you own add-ons for. See Dovetail Games support.

Check saves, add-ons, and physical copies separately
Buying a game is the supported route to continued play, but the general Game Pass guidance does not settle every title-specific detail. Before buying, check the game’s platform listing and publisher or platform support for save transfer, add-on compatibility, and whether a disc edition exists. A physical copy is only an option if that particular game has one; do not assume a digital Game Pass download can be converted into a disc license.
