Yes, you may still be able to play a game after its online servers shut down—but the answer depends on which server function ended. If the game only used servers for matchmaking, an installed copy may retain its campaign, local multiplayer, LAN, or direct peer-to-peer modes. If an authentication server must approve your ownership before launch, the entire game can stop working unless the publisher supplies an offline update or a legally permitted preservation method.
Use the shutdown notice, test the client without signing in, and identify whether the failure is authentication or matchmaking before considering private servers or circumvention. Store closure, server closure, and loss of downloadable content are separate events.
What happens when a game’s online servers shut down?
A shutdown removes one or more network services; it does not automatically erase the game installed on your console or computer. Publishers may retire matchmaking, leaderboards, communities, cloud saves, downloadable content, account services, or the authentication check that runs before the title opens. The result can range from a fully playable offline campaign to a game that cannot pass its startup entitlement check.
PlayStation shutdown notices commonly specify that multiplayer and community features are ending while offline modes or limited single-player functionality remain. Electronic Arts likewise says that, in some instances, a game can still be played offline after its online services are no longer available. That qualification matters: offline access is a title-by-title decision, not a guarantee for every digitally purchased game.

Authentication servers versus matchmaking servers
An authentication server verifies an account, license, or entitlement before the client starts. If that check is mandatory and the server disappears, the game may fail before reaching its menu.
A matchmaking server introduces players to one another after the game has launched. Losing it normally disables public online multiplayer, rankings, or social features while leaving a campaign, local multiplayer, LAN mode, or another connection method usable.
The U.S. Federal Register’s 2015 rulemaking describes this distinction because the technical failure determines whether a title is partly disabled or unusable. Do not assume that an error reading “online services unavailable” means the whole game is dead; test whether the client reaches an offline menu.
Can I still play the game offline?
Follow this sequence before changing files, buying hardware, or searching for a private server.
- Read the official shutdown notice. Record the end date, affected platform, edition, and each function being removed. Look for explicit statements about offline campaigns, local play, redownloads, or an offline patch.
- Launch the installed copy without signing in. Disconnect the console or computer from the internet, start the game, and choose an offline or skip-login option if one appears. Test the campaign and any local modes you own. Restore the connection afterward if the platform requires it for unrelated account functions.
- Test a redownloaded copy. If the original installation is gone, use the platform account that purchased the game and see whether the title remains in your library. A store listing disappearing does not necessarily remove a prior purchase.
- Classify the failure. Reaching a main menu but finding empty matchmaking indicates a network-service loss. A startup message demanding an unavailable login indicates an authentication dependency.
- Check local alternatives. Inspect the game’s menus and manual for an offline campaign, split-screen, LAN, direct-IP, or publisher-provided peer-to-peer option. These features must already exist or be officially enabled; a router, VPN, or hard drive cannot create them.
- Preserve a working installation. Keep the installed client, patches, save files, and proof of purchase where your platform’s terms allow. Do not delete a version that still launches offline until you know a replacement will work.

How to tell whether only multiplayer was removed
Start the title while offline and inspect every menu you can reach. A campaign, tutorial, local skirmish, split-screen lobby, or LAN browser is evidence that the client can operate without the retired service. An error that appears only after selecting “online,” “ranked,” or “join” points to matchmaking rather than authentication.
Some games show a generic network warning even when offline content remains. Try dismissing it, selecting “play offline,” or entering the single-player campaign directly. If the notice returns before the main menu and there is no offline option, the title likely performs an authentication check that the shutdown removed.

Do not treat cloud saves, seasonal inventories, or online unlocks as guaranteed offline content. A campaign may run while progress stored only on the publisher’s servers, competitive statistics, or server-side purchases become inaccessible.

Store closure and server closure are different. Microsoft states that purchased Xbox 360 games remain playable after the Xbox 360 marketplace closes, while online multiplayer continues only as long as the publisher operates the relevant servers. The same principle is useful on other platforms: losing the storefront does not automatically revoke an existing license, but redownload rights, patches, and add-ons depend on the platform and publisher.
Redownload checklist
- Sign in with the account that originally purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open the platform’s owned-games or download-history list rather than searching the public store.
- Confirm that the correct edition and region are selected; deluxe, disc, and digital editions can have different entitlements.
- Install required patches while they are still offered, then test the game offline.
- Keep the installation and a local save backup if the platform permits backups.
A physical disc can provide the client but cannot restore a server-side entitlement check. Conversely, a digital license can remain valid while a publisher’s authentication service is retired. The shutdown notice and the platform’s account policy determine the actual outcome.
Can I use a private server?
Only when the publisher documents or authorizes the server package, hosting method, or community platform for that specific game. Some aftercare models use community hosting, peer-to-peer connections, LAN, or local servers. Those options are practical only when the game’s code and license permit them.
Do not assume that a downloadable “server emulator” is lawful or safe. Rockstar Games’ customer-support notice, updated April 22, 2024, warns that developing software for or hosting unauthorized servers can expose the operator to legal action by Take-Two Interactive. That warning is title-specific but illustrates the risk of treating every private-server project as permitted.
Questions to answer before hosting or joining
- Did the publisher release the dedicated-server files or explicitly authorize community hosting?
- Does the game’s end-user license permit reverse engineering, server emulation, or redistribution of modified files?
- Are you using an official patch, or a third-party executable that could contain malware or steal credentials?
- Will the server require copies of proprietary assets, copyrighted client files, or another player’s account token?
- Is the project commercial, monetized, or collecting personal data?
If the publisher has not authorized the method, the safest choice is to use offline, LAN, or local features already exposed by the unmodified client. Joining an unauthorized server can also risk account sanctions even when you are not hosting it.

Is bypassing the login legal?
There is no universal answer. Contract terms, copyright law, anti-circumvention rules, and the country where you live all matter. Do not present a U.S. exception as permission worldwide.
Limited U.S. video-game exemption
Under 37 C.F.R. § 201.40, a person who lawfully acquired a complete game may circumvent an access control after the external authentication server has ceased support, solely to restore personal local gameplay on a PC or console. The rule defines “ceased to provide access” as either an affirmative end-of-support statement or at least six months of discontinued support, provided support has not been restored.
Each condition is important: the copy must have been lawfully acquired; the purpose must be personal local play; and the authentication service must meet the rule’s ceased-support test. The exemption does not authorize copying a game you never owned, distributing a crack, defeating unrelated protections, or recreating the publisher’s online service.

What the exemption does not cover
The same rule treats institutional preservation separately. Eligible libraries, archives, and museums may have limited noncommercial rights, generally confined to the institution’s premises. Those provisions do not turn a personal home server into an authorized replacement for public multiplayer.
Outside the United States, the result can differ. A game’s contract can also prohibit conduct that a copyright exception might otherwise permit. For a valuable collection, commercial project, or public server, obtain advice from a lawyer familiar with your jurisdiction and the game’s license.
Supported ways to keep playing with other people
Local multiplayer and split-screen
These modes run on one console or on a local network and do not require the retired matchmaking service. Check controller limits, whether all players need profiles, and whether downloadable characters or maps were server-delivered.

LAN play
A LAN browser or local-host option can connect players in the same home or venue. Use the game’s own local-network menu and keep every player on a compatible game version. LAN support is not interchangeable with a private internet server; it only works if the client includes it.

Direct peer-to-peer connections
Some publishers move a title from centralized matchmaking to peer-to-peer or provide an update that lets one player host. Follow the publisher’s instructions exactly. If no official update exists, do not infer that port forwarding or a VPN will recreate the service.
Community hosting authorized by the publisher
When a publisher releases server tools or names an authorized community platform, use that documentation, supported versions, and official authentication process. Verify that the project is still maintained and that it does not request your platform password.

“You must be online to play” appears before the menu
- Read the final shutdown notice for an offline patch or supported workaround.
- Confirm that the game is fully installed and patched; a partial installation can resemble an authentication failure.
- Try the platform’s documented offline mode with the purchasing account already verified.
- If the service has been discontinued for at least six months or the publisher made an end-of-support statement, assess whether the narrow U.S. exemption applies to your situation rather than downloading an unverified crack.
The campaign works, but saves or unlocks are missing
Those items may have been stored on the publisher’s servers. Check whether the title offers local save slots or an export function. A working offline executable cannot recover server-only data after the service is gone.
The game launches, but DLC is unavailable
Downloadable content can have separate entitlements and servers. Check the platform’s owned-content list and the shutdown notice. Do not assume that a disc or base-game license includes content that was formerly delivered online.
Friends cannot join a local session
Confirm that everyone uses the same title, edition, patch level, and network type. Test a local session without internet access. If local play works but internet invitations fail, the retired matchmaking or presence service is the likely missing component.

How to preserve a game responsibly
Preservation starts before the shutdown date. Download permitted patches, verify that the campaign launches while temporarily offline, export saves where the platform supports it, and keep purchase records. Avoid modifying a working client until you understand the license and the legal rules in your country.
“A server shutdown will not erase the game,” writes Signal Spike Games in its aftercare policy, but the playable portion may be smaller than the original product. Record which menus, modes, maps, and saves function offline; this prevents confusion when a future platform migration or reinstall changes the result.
For institutional preservation, use the procedures and limitations that apply to libraries, archives, and museums. Personal preservation does not automatically grant permission to redistribute game files, operate a public replacement service, or bypass account controls for other players.

A practical decision tree
- Is there an official shutdown notice? If yes, follow its dates and affected functions. If no, check whether the outage is temporary before changing anything.
- Does the installed or redownloaded client open offline? If yes, use its campaign and supported local modes.
- Does only matchmaking fail? Look for LAN, split-screen, direct peer-to-peer, or an authorized community host.
- Does authentication block launch? Look for an official offline update, then examine the narrow legal rules that apply where you live.
- Is a private server unauthorized? Do not host or distribute it without clear publisher permission.
- Was only the store closed? Check your owned-games library; prior purchases may remain downloadable even though new sales have ended.
The safest expectation is specific rather than absolute: you can keep playing the parts that run without the retired service, provided your copy, platform, and local law allow it. No universal statistic predicts how many games survive a shutdown, so rely on the title’s notice and an offline test instead of a blanket promise.
