You can make OBS attempt to start streaming when Windows launches by adding OBS’s --startstreaming parameter to an automatic launch. First configure OBS’s YouTube connection and stream key, then test a full restart: the launch parameter starts OBS’s streaming action, but it cannot guarantee that Windows, the network, and YouTube are ready or that the broadcast reconnects successfully.

What this setup can—and cannot—do

OBS Studio’s official launch-parameters documentation lists --startstreaming as “Automatically start streaming.” It can start the configured encoder action when OBS launches. It does not itself configure a YouTube broadcast, select or create every kind of broadcast, or ensure a successful connection after a power failure or restart.

YouTube treats the stream key as the credential and destination information that lets an encoder send a feed to the correct stream. Configure and test that connection before relying on unattended startup. YouTube also has separate auto-start and auto-stop settings for controlling a stream from the encoder; check the behavior you want in the stream’s settings. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Prepare OBS and YouTube before automating launch

  1. Set up the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the intended live stream and obtain its stream key. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to that stream.
  2. Configure OBS’s streaming destination. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or select the correct stream key. Save the settings.
  3. Verify the broadcast controls. In YouTube’s live-stream settings, check whether auto-start and auto-stop match your plan. These are YouTube stream settings, not substitutes for OBS’s launch parameter.
  4. Test a manual connection first. Start OBS, begin streaming, and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the intended event receives video and audio and that the stream is accessible as expected. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality before going live; see YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.
  5. Save your OBS profile and scene collection. Confirm OBS opens with the correct scenes, sources, and audio devices. A successful launch is not useful if the desired scene or sound input is missing.

Start OBS streaming automatically at sign-in

Option 1: Startup-folder shortcut

This is a straightforward choice when the stream should start after a user signs in. Create a shortcut to OBS, add the launch parameter to the shortcut’s target, then place the shortcut in the Windows Startup folder for that user.

  1. Find the OBS executable, commonly C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe. Your installation may be in a different folder.
  2. Create a shortcut to obs64.exe.
  3. Open the shortcut’s Properties. In Target, keep the executable path and add a space followed by --startstreaming after the closing quotation mark. For example:
    "C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming
  4. Press Win+R, enter shell:startup, and press Enter. Move or copy the shortcut into the folder that opens.
  5. Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, then check OBS and YouTube Live Control Room to see whether the configured stream starts.

The Startup-folder method runs in the user’s sign-in session. If Windows restarts but nobody signs in, this shortcut may not launch OBS. A startup launch also does not eliminate delays while Windows starts devices or reconnects to the network.

Option 2: Task Scheduler

Use Task Scheduler when you need more control over the trigger or launch conditions. OBS’s documentation says automated Windows launches should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory—the Task Scheduler field labeled Start in (optional).

  1. Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task.
  2. On General, give the task a name. Choose whether it should run only when you are logged on or whether it should run whether or not you are logged on. OBS’s behavior with your scenes, devices, permissions, and Windows session should be tested under the account and conditions you select.
  3. On Triggers, add the trigger that fits your needs, such as At log on. A log-on trigger is suitable when OBS needs the normal desktop session and its user devices.
  4. On Actions, choose Start a program. Set Program/script to the full path to obs64.exe, such as C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe. In Add arguments (optional), enter --startstreaming.
  5. In Start in (optional), enter the OBS folder containing obs64.exe, such as C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bit. Do not include the executable name in this field.
  6. Review any conditions and settings that could prevent launch—for example, power-related conditions on a machine that may restart after an outage—then save the task.
  7. Use Task Scheduler’s Run command to test the task, then perform a real Windows restart and verify the result in OBS and YouTube Live Control Room.

Task Scheduler offers trigger and condition controls; it does not make an unavailable network or an unsuccessful first connection reliable. The appropriate trigger and sign-in behavior depend on whether your OBS setup needs an interactive Windows session.

Test recovery after a restart or outage

Do not assume that an OBS process opening means viewers can see a live feed. Test the entire chain under realistic conditions: Windows startup, OBS launch, stream connection, YouTube preview, and the intended public or scheduled broadcast state.

  • Restart Windows and confirm OBS opens with the expected profile, scenes, and audio sources.
  • Check OBS’s status for an active connection and check YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming preview.
  • Confirm audio and video are present and that the event is in the expected state before relying on it unattended.
  • If testing a power interruption, distinguish a normal restart from a sudden loss of power: the latter can also interrupt the router or delay internet service.
  • Repeat the test after changing the Windows account, OBS installation path, stream settings, or startup method.

YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Its streaming guidance recommends upload bandwidth headroom; where using backup encoder capacity, the stated guidance is primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of recovery. Check YouTube’s streaming tips for context.

Troubleshooting: OBS does not go live after Windows starts

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS opens, but streaming does not start The launch argument is missing, misspelled, or attached incorrectly; the shortcut or scheduled task may be launching another OBS installation. Check that --startstreaming appears after the executable path in the shortcut, or in Task Scheduler’s arguments field. Confirm the target path points to the OBS executable you use.
The scheduled task runs but OBS behaves incorrectly or fails to find resources The task’s working directory is not set to the OBS folder. Set Task Scheduler’s Start in (optional) to the directory containing obs64.exe, as specified by the OBS launch-parameters documentation.
OBS starts, but YouTube receives no feed The stream key or destination may be wrong, the network may not be ready, or the initial connection may have failed. Verify the selected YouTube stream and key in OBS, then test a manual connection and inspect YouTube Live Control Room. A community discussion of startup automation warns that auto-reconnect may not work if the initial connection fails; treat that as a possible failure mode, not an official guarantee. See the OBS Forums discussion.
YouTube shows a preview, but the event does not start or behave as expected YouTube’s auto-start/auto-stop choices or the broadcast’s state may not match the intended workflow. Check the stream’s settings and event state in YouTube Studio. YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop separately from OBS’s launch behavior at Manage live stream settings.
Video or audio is missing after restart A scene, capture source, audio device, or Windows permission may differ in the startup session. Open OBS in the same Windows account and session used by the task, inspect the active scene and meters, and verify the required devices are available before testing unattended operation again.
The stream drops when the connection is interrupted A network disruption can break the connection; the network may also be overloaded or not fully available when OBS first launches. Check the upload connection and leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s guidance for a setup using backup encoder capacity calls for primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%; see Streaming tips.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you need a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos through Windows restarts, a cloud service avoids making a home PC the thing that must relaunch and reconnect. With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer can be off; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
