For a live stream, put the modem, router, and any other essential network equipment on backup power too. A UPS only protects against a power interruption within its capacity and runtime; it cannot prevent an ISP failure or keep OBS running after its battery is exhausted.
What you need to keep running
Think of the setup as two separate requirements: power for the computer that runs OBS, and a working internet path to the streaming service. If the PC stays on but the router loses power, the stream can still disconnect. If the internet connection fails independently, a UPS will not restore it.
India does not have one uniform scheduled-outage timetable for every location. The Ministry of Power says Rule 10 of the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 provides for 24×7 supply by distribution licensees, while allowing a Commission to specify lower hours for some categories. It also says supply and distribution fall within the relevant State Government and distribution utility’s purview. Treat this as context, not a guarantee that planned maintenance outages cannot occur; check your local utility’s announcements. Choose a UPS for your actual setup
1. Work out the load
Check or measure the computer’s real power draw while OBS is doing the work you expect during the outage. Add the modem, router, and any other device that must stay powered for the stream to remain connected. A PC’s draw can change with its workload, so a figure measured while idle may not represent a streaming session.

2. Match output and runtime to the goal
Compare the combined load with the UPS’s supported output and its stated runtime at that load. Decide how long you need to bridge the interruption: enough to ride through a brief cut, or enough time to stop the session safely. There is no responsible universal VA or watt rating for every OBS setup because the computer, GPU workload, network equipment, battery condition, and target duration vary.
Compare candidate units by supported wattage, runtime at your combined load, transfer behavior and PC compatibility, battery condition and replacement options, and whether they can power the network devices as well as the computer. Do not assume a runtime listed for a lighter load applies to your setup.

3. Check transfer behavior with your PC
An offline UPS switches to battery when mains power fails. BharatSkills / Directorate General of Training’s Electronics & Hardware: Instrument Mechanic (NSQF Revised 2022), Trade Theory describes a few milliseconds of transfer time for an offline UPS. Whether a particular computer rides through that transition depends on the equipment; test your actual PC and UPS together rather than assuming compatibility. The training text describes an offline UPS as supplying emergency power during sudden load shedding so work can continue until power returns or the PC can be safely shut down. Prepare OBS and the stream
Protect a local recording
In OBS, choose MKV as the recording format if an ungraceful stop is possible. OBS recommends MKV because an unexpected interruption is less likely to corrupt the entire recording. If you need an MP4 afterward, use OBS’s Remux Recordings tool to create a copy. MKV does not keep the computer powered or guarantee that unsaved work survives. Enable reconnect, but understand its limit
OBS has an Automatically Reconnect option in its Advanced settings. It can help when the stream connection drops while the computer is still running; it cannot encode video while the PC has no power, and it does not guarantee that an event will resume after a full shutdown. OBS notes that dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to a network problem between the computer and ingest server, which may have causes outside OBS. Check the YouTube side too
YouTube recommends leaving upload-bandwidth headroom, testing the setup, monitoring stream health, and checking that the local archive file is growing. A UPS purchase alone does not establish that the computer, router, ISP connection, and YouTube stream will all remain healthy. Review YouTube’s streaming tips and Manage live stream settings.

Test before the scheduled outage
- Connect the full intended load. Put the OBS computer and the modem/router or other required network devices on the UPS outlets designated for battery backup.
- Run OBS as you plan to use it. Use the expected streaming workload and start a local MKV recording if you need an archive.
- Simulate a brief mains interruption safely. Follow the UPS maker’s instructions to test the transition. Confirm the PC stays on, OBS continues, and the router remains powered.
- Verify the network and stream. Confirm internet access remains available and check YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming that power continuity means connection continuity.
- Check the recording. Confirm the local file is growing during the test and can be opened. If you need MP4, test remuxing a sample.
- Plan for a longer outage. Know how much runtime remains at the combined load and what you will do when it is nearly depleted. A UPS can buy time; it cannot supply power indefinitely.
Troubleshoot common failures
