Disconnecting from Remote Desktop does not necessarily close OBS, but it can remove the virtual display or audio devices OBS was using. If the application stays open while the picture freezes or sound disappears, the problem is likely the capture path—not OBS stopping. The right fix depends on whether you are capturing a live desktop on a physical machine or trying to run an unattended video playlist on a hosted VPS.
First identify what stopped
Disconnecting from a Windows VPS is different from signing out: the remote session can end while an application remains open. However, OBS forum users have reported that disconnecting RDP can also change the display or audio devices available to the session. These are community reports, not an official guarantee about current Windows behavior, and the result may depend on the host and configuration.
Before disconnecting, note whether OBS is open and whether its preview is updating. After reconnecting, check the preview, the audio mixer, and the properties of the affected sources. Video capture and desktop audio can fail separately: a frozen capture with moving audio levels points to a different issue from a working picture with silent desktop audio.
Check whether the VPS can provide a persistent capture path
Find out whether the machine is a physical computer or a hosted virtual machine, and ask the provider what display, GPU, and audio devices remain available when no RDP session is active. A desktop-capture setup expects those sources to continue existing independently of the viewer’s remote session. Forum guidance warns that a virtual display or audio device supplied through RDP may disappear when that session disconnects.

- If OBS remains open but its video source freezes, investigate display and capture-device continuity.
- If the picture continues but desktop audio stops, inspect the audio source and whether its device persists outside RDP.
- If both remain active in OBS but the stream drops or reports network trouble, investigate the connection to YouTube separately.
Keep desktop capture running: practical options
On a physical Windows machine
For a physical machine with its own persistent display/GPU and audio path, OBS forum contributors suggest using remote-control software that mirrors the existing console desktop instead of introducing an RDP session display. VNC is one example mentioned in that discussion. Test the exact capture and audio sources after disconnecting the remote viewer; this approach is not guaranteed for every machine or VNC configuration.
On a hosted Windows VPS
Do not assume VNC will supply hardware the virtual machine does not have. Ask the hosting provider whether a persistent GPU/display and audio device are available outside an active RDP session. If the capture workflow depends on devices that exist only during the remote session, changing remote-control software may not solve the underlying limitation.
Separate capture failures from network failures
OBS’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or the system cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It recommends checking the ingest choice, bitrate, network settings, and software that may interfere with the connection. Those measures address streaming-network problems; they do not restore a display or audio device removed when RDP disconnects.
- Reconnect and check whether the OBS preview is frozen, whether audio levels move, and whether OBS reports dropped frames or a stream disconnection.
- If the preview or audio source failed, verify the corresponding source and device path, then confirm with the host whether it persists outside RDP.
- If OBS instead reports dropped frames or loses its connection to the ingest server, follow the OBS network troubleshooting steps and check the ingest, bitrate, network configuration, and interfering software.
For unattended prerecorded video, consider a different workflow
If the goal is a playlist or other prerecorded output running continuously, rather than capturing an interactive desktop, do not assume a desktop application is the best unattended service. In an OBS forum thread, moderator FerretBomb advised looking into RTMP “video jukebox” servers such as Red5 for automated 24/7 use. That is a high-level alternative to investigate, not a current product endorsement or a tested migration recipe.

If you want prerecorded videos or a playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a VPS or home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not capture a live camera or provide a general desktop-capture path. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
