OBS does not automatically match the loudness of every file in a VLC playlist. To make playlist videos sound more consistent on a YouTube stream or recording, compare and adjust the files before playback, then check the OBS output with filters and monitoring. YouTube’s Stable volume is a separate viewer-side feature; it does not normalize the audio OBS sends.

What OBS can—and cannot—do with playlist volume

OBS can play a playlist through a VLC Video source and gives you controls for the source’s level and audio filters. Its documented playlist controls do not promise automatic loudness normalization for each item. A single level adjustment to the source affects the playlist output; it cannot by itself make a quiet file and a loud file equally loud.

To add a VLC Video source, VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. In the source properties, you can configure playlist behavior such as looping and shuffling. See the OBS VLC Video Source documentation for available options; labels may vary with software versions.

Match the files before playing them

Compare the whole item, not just its peaks

Listen to each playlist entry at a consistent playback level. Compare perceived loudness across the full item, along with peak level, dialogue-to-music balance where relevant, and any passages that become unexpectedly loud. A peak meter can help identify peak differences, but matching peaks alone does not guarantee that two files will sound equally loud.

Use a consistent audio workflow

For the closest match, prepare the files with a consistent offline audio workflow before adding them to the playlist. You can also carefully tune processing on the playlist source in OBS, but the reviewed OBS documentation does not prescribe a specific loudness target, a normalization utility, or a guaranteed per-file normalization method. Treat matching as something to check by listening, not a result the playlist setting supplies automatically.

Set and monitor the OBS output

  1. Add the playlist: In the Sources dock, add a VLC Video source, select the playlist files, and choose the playback behavior you need.
  2. Set the source level: Use the source’s volume control in the OBS Audio Mixer to adjust the overall playlist level. If needed, open the source or scene’s filters to add audio processing. OBS explains how to add filters to sources and scenes in its Filters Guide.
  3. Listen to the signal OBS will send: Use audio monitoring and listen both at the playback device and after the signal reaches OBS. The OBS Audio Mixer guide describes mixer meters and monitoring; check the actual output rather than relying only on how the file sounds locally.
  4. Check each playlist item: Watch the mixer meter and listen as each file plays. If one item is too quiet, adjust the source processing or prepare that file separately; do not raise the entire playlist so much that louder entries clip.
  5. Keep the final signal below clipping: OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the digital full-scale point and says the audio reaching a recording or stream must stay below it to avoid clipping distortion. This is a ceiling, not a recommended loudness-matching target.

OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details explains its meter indications and the clipping limit. A meter helps reveal signal level, but listening remains important for judging whether entries sound balanced.

Understand YouTube’s Stable volume separately

YouTube’s Stable volume is a playback enhancement for viewers, not a control over the audio OBS sends to a livestream or recording. YouTube says it is on by default when watching videos, where available, and that it balances quiet and loud portions by continuously adjusting playback levels. Viewers can toggle it in the player settings. It is not available for every video and is disabled for YouTube Music and official music videos. Details are in YouTube Help: Stable volume.

YouTube also provides creator controls for audio-enhancement defaults for future uploads in YouTube Studio on a computer. Those settings do not affect videos already uploaded, and viewer settings can take precedence. See YouTube Help: Manage audio enhancements. These upload and playback features do not replace checking the audio in OBS before or during a stream.

Troubleshoot uneven or distorted playlist audio

  • One file is consistently quieter: Adjust that file in your offline preparation workflow, or carefully tune source processing while comparing it against the other entries.
  • Loud files distort after you raise the playlist level: Lower the overall source level and address the quieter file separately. Keep the OBS output below 0 dBFS.
  • The meter looks acceptable but the playlist still sounds uneven: Compare perceived loudness across full items and listen through OBS monitoring. Peak levels alone may not reflect perceived loudness.
  • You hear a difference locally and in the stream: Check both the local playback device and the signal after it reaches OBS; monitoring can help locate where the change occurs.
  • You expected YouTube to fix the stream: Stable volume is a viewer-side playback feature, and availability varies by video. It does not normalize the source playlist in OBS.
