For dense AI servers, the dependable design is direct-to-chip liquid cooling: cold plates remove heat from GPUs and CPUs, coolant distribution units (CDUs) circulate and condition the loop, and chillers, dry coolers or liquid-to-liquid heat exchangers reject heat. Keep room air cooling or rear-door heat exchangers for the 10–30% of heat that cold plates do not capture in a hybrid retrofit. Select every temperature, fluid, pressure and flow limit from the accelerator and server OEM; there is no universal coolant setpoint that is safe for every H100, Blackwell or other platform.
Why AI racks outgrow air cooling
AI accelerators turn electrical power into heat at the same time that training and inference workloads create rapid, synchronized load changes. Traditional computer-room air-conditioning (CRAC) and computer-room air-handler (CRAH) systems move heat from the server room, but air has a low heat capacity and requires high airflow, large fans and tight temperature control. ASHRAE’s handbook says traditional air-cooled technology is limited in removing the increasing heat density inside silicon while maintaining the lower chip temperatures required by next-generation high-performance computing.
The scale is changing quickly. NVIDIA described hyperscale racks above 135 kW in 2025, compared with roughly 20 kW in earlier generations. ASHRAE’s 2026 retrofit guidance discusses AI racks commonly above 100 kW and notes that a liquid-cooled rack can exceed 1,800 kg (4,000 lb). Those figures affect cooling, power distribution, structural engineering and service procedures at the same time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Data-center electricity use makes the efficiency issue material beyond one rack. ASHRAE’s 2023 AI framework introduction cited data centers as 4.4% of United States electricity consumption in 2023. A cooling system that lowers fan and chiller work can therefore improve both rack reliability and facility operating cost, but only when it is engineered for the actual hardware and climate.

Choose the cooling architecture
Most new dense GPU and CPU deployments should start with direct-to-chip (DTC) liquid cooling. Other approaches remain useful where the rack contains substantial air-cooled equipment or where a different service model is justified.
| Architecture | How heat is captured | Water or fluid temperature | Facility equipment | Retrofit and service considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct-to-chip liquid cooling | Cold plates contact GPU and CPU packages; the loop captures the majority of processor heat. | Set by the server and accelerator OEM’s liquid-cooling class, allowable approach temperature and condensation margin; no platform-independent value is safe. | CDU, supply/return manifolds, pumps, filtration, water-chemistry control and a chiller, dry cooler or liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger. | Best fit for dense racks. Requires piping, leak detection, isolation valves, service space and structural review. |
| Rear-door heat exchanger | Captures hot exhaust air at the rack rear rather than at the silicon. | Set by the heat-exchanger and facility-water design; server inlet and exhaust limits still apply. | Door heat exchangers, pumps or a CDU and room air system for unserved loads. | Useful when much of the rack remains air cooled. Adds door weight, hoses and maintenance access. |
| Air only | CRAC/CRAH airflow removes all server heat. | Constrained by server inlet limits, fan capacity and room airflow patterns. | Raised-floor or overhead distribution, CRAC/CRAH units and containment. | Simple for low-density racks, but increasingly impractical as accelerator and rack power rise. |
| Immersion cooling | Servers or components sit in a dielectric fluid that absorbs heat directly. | Determined by the fluid, tank and equipment design; it is not interchangeable with a water loop. | Immersion tanks, fluid pumps, heat exchangers and a facility heat-rejection system. | Consider only when fluid compatibility, component access, safety and the operator’s service model are acceptable. |
A hybrid design is common in retrofits: DTC handles the GPUs and CPUs, while CRAC/CRAH or rear-door equipment handles memory, storage, network adapters and other heat that cold plates do not capture. ASHRAE’s 2026 guidance assigns roughly 10–30% of the heat to CRAC/CRAH in one hybrid-retrofit pattern; the percentage is a design input, not a guarantee for every server.
Profile the load before buying cooling equipment
Cooling capacity should be based on measured or vendor-specified load, not a rack’s nameplate alone. Build a profile for each server type and for the complete rack row.
- Collect accelerator data. Record the thermal design power (TDP), permitted liquid-cooling class, maximum inlet and outlet temperatures, pressure drop, flow range, fluid chemistry and any restrictions on additives. Obtain these values from the accelerator and server OEM.
- Calculate rack and row power. Include GPUs, CPUs, memory, storage, network fabric, fans, power-conversion losses and CDU or pump loads. Keep separate values for steady state, startup and worst-case synchronized operation.
- Measure step loads. Run representative training or inference jobs that start many accelerators together. Note the rise time, peak power and duration; a short synchronized spike can exceed the average used for chiller sizing.
- Record air conditions. Measure server inlet temperature, humidity, dew point, rack exhaust temperature and airflow for equipment that remains air cooled. Map hot spots rather than relying on one room sensor.
- Define availability targets. Decide whether a pump, CDU, chiller, dry cooler, power feed or control network may fail without throttling workloads. N+1 or 2N choices should be made at this stage.
Use the resulting profile to size cold plates, manifolds, CDUs, heat exchangers, pumps, piping and heat-rejection capacity. Leave electrical and hydraulic headroom for firmware updates, denser servers and future workload changes.

Build a direct-to-chip liquid loop
Cold plates and server manifolds
Cold plates must match the package, mounting pressure, flow direction and allowable pressure drop specified by the server manufacturer. Provide separate supply and return connections that can be isolated without draining an entire row. Manifolds should balance flow between servers and include identification, shutoff valves and drain or fill points that a technician can reach without removing unrelated equipment.
CDUs and heat rejection
The CDU separates the controlled technology loop from facility water when the design calls for it, transfers heat through a heat exchanger, filters the coolant and controls flow and temperature. Select pump capacity for the cold-plate pressure drop, manifold losses, elevation and fouling margin. Provide redundant pumps or redundant CDUs when a single failure would interrupt production.
Reject heat through a chiller, a dry cooler or a liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger connected to the building system. Warm-water operation can reduce compressor work and increase the hours a dry cooler can operate, but only if the equipment’s liquid-cooling class and approach temperatures allow it. Do not raise supply temperature until the OEM limits, facility design and condensation analysis agree.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFiltration and water chemistry
Install filtration sized for the cold-plate passages and provide differential-pressure gauges or transmitters so a blocked filter is visible before flow collapses. Control conductivity, corrosion inhibitors, biological growth and material compatibility according to the coolant supplier and OEM requirements. Keep a documented sampling and replacement schedule; adding an unapproved additive can damage seals, void support or change heat-transfer performance.

Leak detection and isolation
Use point sensors beneath CDUs and manifolds, sensing cable where water could travel, and pressure or level monitoring that can identify a slow leak. Configure alarms at the management system and locally at the rack. Isolation valves should allow one server, one manifold branch or one CDU to be removed while the rest of the row continues operating. Provide drip containment and a safe drain path; a leak response that depends on reaching a valve behind a live rack is not maintainable.
Set temperatures without guessing
There is no single “H100 temperature” or “Blackwell coolant temperature” that applies to every server. The correct setpoint depends on the liquid-cooling class, cold-plate design, approach temperature between coolant and silicon, facility-water conditions, climate and dry-cooler limits. Obtain the allowable supply and return range, maximum rate of change, minimum flow, maximum pressure and fluid specification from the exact server bill of materials.
Keep these measurements distinct:
- Facility-water temperature: the water available from a chiller, dry cooler or building loop.
- CDU secondary-loop supply temperature: the controlled coolant sent to the cold plates.
- CDU return temperature: the temperature after absorbing server heat.
- Server inlet air temperature and dew point: critical for memory, storage and other air-cooled parts and for condensation prevention.
- Package or junction temperature: a telemetry value reported by the accelerator; it is not a substitute for a coolant specification.
For any proposed setpoint, verify that the coldest exposed surface remains above the room dew point with the required safety margin. Insulate cold piping and fittings where condensation is possible, and interlock the system so a dehumidification or sensor failure cannot send sub-dew-point fluid into a rack.
Can an existing data center be retrofitted?
Yes, but a liquid-cooled AI retrofit is a building project rather than a simple server swap. ASHRAE’s retrofit discussion warns that racks can exceed 1,800 kg, so the floor and the path from the loading dock must be checked before equipment is ordered.

Structural and physical checks
- Confirm slab, raised-floor panel, pedestal and point-load ratings for the fully populated rack, CDU, batteries and cabling.
- Verify door widths, lift capacity, turning radius and temporary staging locations for a rack weighing more than 4,000 lb.
- Reserve front and rear service clearances for cold-plate replacement, hose changes and air-side maintenance.
- Route supply and return pipes without blocking egress, fire compartments, cable trays or future rack positions.
Power and distribution
Coordinate cooling and electrical design. A synchronized AI workload can increase accelerator, power-conversion and pump demand together, so check feeder, busway, UPS, generator and breaker headroom at the same time. Debra Phillips, NEMA’s president and CEO, summarized the coordination requirement in the 2026 ASHRAE/NEMA/PNNL framework release: “Power distribution infrastructure must be coordinated with cooling and thermal management to maximize safety, reliability, and efficiency outcomes.”
Air-side and fire systems
Retain enough CRAC/CRAH capacity for the residual rack heat and for equipment without cold plates. Rebalance containment and perforated tiles after liquid racks are installed; an air-cooled network switch can still overheat even when the GPUs are within limits. Review fire detection, suppression, drain routing, hose materials and local safety requirements with the facility engineer and authority having jurisdiction.
Commission before production workloads
Do not place a new liquid-cooled row into service after only a visual inspection. Commission the mechanical, electrical and control sequences in stages.

Failure modes and corrective actions
| Symptom | Likely cause | Immediate action | Long-term prevention |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPU clocks fall or thermal-throttle alarms appear | Insufficient flow, high CDU supply temperature, excessive approach temperature or a failing pump. | Reduce workload, verify flow and supply temperature, and move the load to a redundant path if available. | Trend differential pressure and flow; keep pump and CDU redundancy; validate setpoints against OEM limits. |
| Unexpected moisture or leak alarm | Loose fitting, damaged hose, condensation or a false sensor. | Stop or isolate the affected branch, protect personnel, and follow the site leak-response procedure before opening equipment. | Use dew-point interlocks, scheduled sensor tests, torque and hose inspections, containment and reachable isolation valves. |
| Flow slowly declines across a row | Clogged filter, fouling, air in the loop or a partially closed valve. | Compare filter differential pressure and branch readings; isolate and service the affected section. | Set differential-pressure alarms, maintain water chemistry and bleed trapped air during commissioning. |
| Several racks lose cooling together | CDU, pump, heat exchanger, control network or facility-water failure. | Transfer to the redundant unit if designed, shed noncritical workloads and protect the remaining racks from a rapid temperature rise. | Test failover under load and provide independent power and controls where the availability target requires them. |
| Servers reboot during training starts | Insufficient electrical headroom for synchronized step loads, or a protection setting that is too close to the operating peak. | Stop the workload, inspect power-quality and event logs, and restart with a controlled ramp. | Size feeders, UPS and generators from measured step-load profiles rather than average power. |
| Floor movement, panel damage or unsafe rack handling | Liquid-filled rack mass exceeds structural or point-load capacity. | Remove load only under an engineered plan and restrict the affected area. | Obtain structural calculations, use load-spreading measures where approved and verify the transport route before delivery. |
| Controls behave unpredictably after an outage | Uncommissioned sequence-of-operations logic, sensor defaults or delayed pump and valve startup. | Place the row in a safe state and correct the sequence before returning to production. | Test every startup, shutdown, alarm and recovery state with the controls contractor and operations staff. |
Operate for reliability and efficiency
Monitor the liquid and air sides together. At minimum, trend CDU supply and return temperature, flow, differential pressure, pump speed, filter pressure drop, leak sensors, server inlet temperature, dew point, rack power and accelerator thermal telemetry. Alert on rate of change as well as absolute limits: a rapidly rising return temperature can reveal a pump or heat-exchanger problem before a chip reaches its throttle point.

Keep maintenance records tied to each rack and loop branch. Record coolant sampling, filter changes, hose replacements, valve exercises, sensor calibration and firmware changes. A spare-parts plan should include pumps, filters, hoses, sensors and the connectors used by the server platform; a generic substitute may not meet pressure, material or electrical requirements.
Coordinate workload scheduling with thermal capacity. Avoid starting every large training job simultaneously when the facility has limited transient headroom. Capacity-management software should know when a CDU, chiller or pump is unavailable and should drain or cap workloads rather than waiting for thermal throttling.
What liquid cooling can save—and what it cannot guarantee
Liquid cooling can reduce fan power, permit warmer facility-water operation and increase compute density, but savings depend on climate, heat-rejection equipment, utilization and the existing air system. ASHRAE’s 2026 integrated-design guidance cites one scenario in which liquid cooling captured approximately 85% of heat and reduced total facility power by about 10%; that is a scenario-specific estimate, not a universal performance claim. The same guidance cites more than $4 million in annual savings for a 50 MW facility under one set of assumptions.
Compare the complete life-cycle cost: cold plates and CDUs, pumps, piping, controls, filtration, heat rejection, structural work, commissioning, water treatment, spares, maintenance labor, outage risk and eventual decommissioning. A design with lower chiller energy can still be uneconomic if a retrofit requires major structural reinforcement or long service outages.
A practical decision checklist
- Use DTC for dense GPU/CPU racks unless the OEM or service model requires another approach.
- Add rear-door or room air cooling for memory, storage, networking and other heat not captured at the chip.
- Use immersion only after validating fluid compatibility, component access, safety and facility operations.
- Obtain OEM limits for coolant class, temperature, pressure, flow and chemistry; never copy a setpoint from another platform.
- Size cooling and power for synchronized workload spikes, not just average rack watts.
- Provide filtration, chemistry control, leak detection, isolation and redundant pumps or CDUs appropriate to the availability target.
- Check structural capacity, floor loading, transport path, pipe routing, condensation control and fire requirements before ordering racks.
- Commission failover, alarms, control sequences and representative AI workloads before production.
- Trend both coolant and air-side conditions so residual heat does not become a hidden failure point.
The result is a coordinated thermal system: liquid at the silicon, air where liquid does not reach, and power, structure, controls and maintenance designed as one facility rather than as separate upgrades.
