FFmpeg cannot send video while your connection to YouTube is down, and its HTTP -reconnect options do not by themselves reconnect an RTMP or RTMPS output. To recover after the network returns, configure output-side recovery with FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer or use a supervisor to restart a failed FFmpeg process. Then confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that video is arriving and the stream is healthy. Either approach can leave a visible gap; no cited documentation guarantees seamless continuity.
What happens when the network drops
A live encoder needs a working route to YouTube to deliver packets. During a complete outage, FFmpeg cannot transmit; the practical goal is to reconnect promptly after service returns. The interruption may create a gap or affect the broadcast state.
Keep input and output recovery separate. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_max_retries, and delay limits as HTTP protocol behavior. They do not establish recovery for a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
Choose an output recovery method
FFmpeg FIFO recovery
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer supports recovery controls for network output, including attempt_recovery, max_recovery_attempts, and recovery_wait_time. It can retry output after a failure, but it cannot transmit during an outage, and packets may be lost before the connection recovers. Availability and behavior can vary by FFmpeg release. Consult the FFmpeg Formats Documentation that matches your installed build before adapting the FIFO options to your command.

External process supervisor
A supervisor can restart FFmpeg if the process exits or fails. This is a separate recovery mechanism: it starts the command again, so make sure the supervisor uses the intended input, output URL, stream key, and all relevant encoding settings. A supervisor does not make the internet connection available; it can only retry after connectivity returns. The exact setup depends on your operating system and supervisor, so check how it detects process failure and whether it applies a restart delay or limit.
Configure and verify the YouTube connection
- Record your FFmpeg version. Check the installed build and use its corresponding local or online
ffmpeg-formatsdocumentation before relying on FIFO options copied from another release. - Use YouTube’s ingest details. Configure the ingestion URL and stream key supplied for the broadcast. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in a script, log, or support post.
- If using RTMPS, validate the endpoint. The URL must use the RTMPS protocol and a valid ingestion endpoint and path, with port 443. TLS must use the correct hostname/SNI. Google recommends RTMPS for ordinary user content, including low-latency cases; see Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
- Enable one recovery path. Configure FIFO output recovery using the options documented for your FFmpeg build, or configure a supervisor to restart the failed process with the same command and stream configuration.
- Watch both sides. Inspect FFmpeg’s error log, then check YouTube Live’s stream status and health. A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving video. The LiveStreams resource can report stream status and health;
videoIngestionStarvedindicates insufficient incoming video. See YouTube LiveStreams. - Rehearse a controlled interruption. Test the recovery setup before an important broadcast, and confirm that video resumes in YouTube. Do not assume a reconnect is seamless simply because the process remains open.
What YouTube backup ingestion does—and does not do
YouTube documents primary and backup ingest addresses. The backup address is for optional simultaneous sending; the cited API documentation does not describe it as an automatic failover target for a single FFmpeg connection. Sending to a second address is therefore not a substitute for configuring output recovery or restarting a failed sender.

Reduce the chance of an outage
A cellular failover router may preserve internet reachability if the primary ISP path fails and cellular service is available. That depends on coverage, data capacity, carrier terms, and how the network handles route changes. A change in route can still break the active connection, so backup connectivity is not a zero-interruption guarantee and does not replace software recovery.
Does switching ingestion protocol solve reconnects?
No. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as suitable from normal through ultra-low latency. RTMPS encrypts the contribution path. HLS and DASH are segment-based alternatives that support additional codecs and may suit higher-resolution contributions, but they have greater latency; changing protocol is not a general reconnect fix.
