Yes—you can keep coding while GitHub is down. An existing Git clone contains the files, history, branches, index, and Git objects needed to edit, stage, compare, branch, and commit without a network connection. What stops working is any operation that must contact GitHub, such as fetch, pull, push, opening pull requests, or accessing GitHub-hosted issue and project data.
The safest outage plan has two independent layers: continue making clearly documented local commits, and maintain a tested backup remote or offline mirror that can receive those commits. When GitHub returns, fetch first, inspect divergence, then merge or rebase according to your team policy before pushing back.
What still works when GitHub is unreachable
A normal clone is a complete working repository on your computer, not merely a temporary checkout of GitHub’s files. Git can read the local object database and references without contacting a server.

Operations that require a reachable remote
git fetch, git pull, and git push contact a remote server. GitHub-dependent actions such as pull requests, reviews, Actions runs, releases, repository settings, and issue tracking are also unavailable if the service or your network path to it is down. A local clone does not reproduce those GitHub features.
Prepare before an outage
Preparation determines whether an outage is a short interruption or a dangerous loss of coordination. Set up the following while GitHub and your normal credentials are working.
1. Keep a complete enough clone
Clone depth matters. A shallow clone may omit older commits that you later need for a release investigation, a long-lived branch, a bisect, or recovery from a divergent history. For outage recovery, keep a full clone unless you have a documented reason to limit history.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInspect the current clone and its remotes:
git remote -v
git rev-parse --is-shallow-repository
git branch -a
git tag --list
If the repository is shallow and the server is available, deepen or complete it before an incident:
git fetch --unshallow
The result should be a normal repository with the history your team expects. A full clone still does not automatically contain every object from every possible ref if those refs were never fetched, so identify any important release, maintenance, or long-lived branches that your recovery plan requires.
2. Add and test a backup remote
Create an empty repository on another Git service or on a self-hosted Git server. Choose a host your organization is legally allowed to use and that can enforce the required access controls, branch protections, retention, and LFS support. Do not assume that a second remote automatically copies GitHub’s issues, pull requests, Actions, releases, secrets, or repository settings; the Git commands below transfer Git objects and refs.
Add the destination under a clear name and verify the configuration:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
git remote add backup <BACKUP_URL>
git remote -v
Use a harmless test branch to validate DNS or network reachability, authentication, authorization, and the destination’s default policies:
git switch -c backup-connectivity-test
git push -u backup backup-connectivity-test
Delete the test branch on the backup host when your policy allows, or retain it as an auditable connectivity check. Test with the exact credential method you expect to use during an incident. For HTTPS, confirm that the required token and credential helper are available; for SSH, confirm that the intended key is loaded and accepted. A credential that works for GitHub may not work for another host.

3. Seed all required branches and tags
Once the test succeeds, publish the branches and tags that the team needs:
git push --all backup
git push --tags backup
git push --all sends local branches. git push --tags sends tags, including release and signing-related references that are present locally. Review the backup host’s branch protections before using these commands: a protected default branch, required checks, or a server-side hook can reject an otherwise valid push. Do not disable controls casually just to make an outage push succeed.
Recommended Free Tools
After seeding, compare the branch and tag lists on both hosts using the destination’s UI or Git commands. Include any branches that are intentionally excluded in your runbook so a later operator does not mistake an omission for a successful mirror.
4. Create an independent mirror archive
A backup remote is convenient for collaboration but remains a live service dependency. Keep a separate archive that can be restored without either host.
git clone --mirror <SOURCE_URL> repo.git
cd repo.git
git lfs fetch --all # only when the repository uses Git LFS
tar -czf repo-mirror.tgz repo.git
A mirror clone is a bare repository intended to include all remote branches and tags. GitHub documents mirror cloning as a way to back up a repository, including its revision history. If the source uses Git LFS, fetch all LFS objects before compressing; the Git references alone do not contain the binary LFS content.
Move the compressed archive to safe-keeping storage. An encrypted external SSD is a practical physical target, but it is an implementation choice rather than a GitHub requirement. Keep a second copy according to your organization’s backup policy, ideally with separate access credentials and a different failure domain. Protect the archive because it contains the repository’s history and potentially sensitive source code.
5. Document what the backup does not contain
Write down the boundary of the plan. The remote and mirror commands preserve Git data that is present locally: commits, trees, blobs, branches, tags, and (when fetched) LFS objects. They do not, by themselves, preserve GitHub issues, pull requests and their review discussions, Actions workflow runs or artifacts, releases, secrets, webhooks, repository variables, branch-rule configuration, collaborators, or other service metadata. Export or back up those items separately if they are part of your continuity requirements.
How to work during the outage
Start from a clean, known branch
Check your current state before making incident work:
git status --short --branch
git branch --show-current
git log -1 --oneline
Create an explicit branch for each piece of work rather than committing unrelated fixes to a shared branch:

git switch -c outage/fix-login-timeout
Use a naming convention that identifies the area and, when useful, the incident or ticket. Clear names reduce collisions when several developers later publish their local work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Commit normally, but make the commits easy to reconcile
- Edit and test locally.
- Review the complete patch with
git diff. - Stage only the intended files:
git add path/to/file. - Review the staged patch:
git diff --cached. - Commit with a focused message:
git commit -m "Fix timeout handling in login flow". - Record the resulting commit ID and branch name in the alternate team channel.
Small, coherent commits make later cherry-picking, rebasing, review, and conflict resolution safer. Avoid rewriting shared history merely to make an eventual push look cleaner; preserve the commits until the team agrees on an integration strategy.
Push the active branch to a working backup
If the backup remote is reachable, publish only the branch you are actively coordinating:
git push backup outage/fix-login-timeout
Set an upstream when appropriate so later pushes can use the intended destination, but check that your local branch is not accidentally tracking GitHub’s unavailable origin:
git push -u backup outage/fix-login-timeout
The backup host may have different default-branch names, required checks, naming rules, or permissions. Treat a successful network transfer as different from successful team integration: verify that the branch is visible and that colleagues can authenticate and fetch it.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Publish every local branch and tag only deliberately
For a planned continuity handoff, send all local branches and tags:
git push --all backup
git push --tags backup
Review the destination first. These commands can expose experimental branches, stale refs, or tags that were never intended for the alternate host. Server-side protections can also reject some refs. If only one branch is needed, the explicit branch push is less disruptive.
If no remote is reachable
Continue committing locally. Copy the working repository to independent storage when policy permits, or create a Git bundle that can be transported and later used as a fetch source:
git bundle create outage-work.bundle --all
Store the bundle with the commit IDs and branch names it contains. A bundle is a file containing Git objects and refs; it is not a substitute for the working directory’s uncommitted changes, so commit anything that must survive before creating it. Verify the file on another machine if the incident is long or the data is critical.

Backup remote versus offline mirror archive
These are complementary controls, not mutually exclusive choices.
| Comparison | Backup remote | Offline mirror archive |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery speed | Fast once the alternate host and credentials are available; branches can be pushed and fetched immediately. | Slower because an operator must locate storage, transfer the archive, and restore or clone from it. |
| Collaboration during the outage | Strong: multiple developers can fetch and push through the alternate host, subject to its permissions and protections. | Limited: people exchange files or bundles unless the archive is placed on a reachable Git server. |
| Authentication dependence | High: network access, accounts, tokens or SSH keys, and host authorization must all work. | Low after the archive is stored, although access to encrypted storage and the decryption key remains necessary. |
| Completeness | Includes the refs and objects you push; it is not automatically a copy of GitHub service metadata. LFS objects require the destination’s LFS support and an explicit transfer strategy. | A mirror includes remote branches and tags present when it was created; run git lfs fetch --all for LFS content. It still does not contain GitHub’s issues, reviews, Actions, secrets, or settings. |
| Storage durability | Depends on the alternate provider’s durability, account security, retention, and geographic redundancy. | Depends on your copies, media, encryption, retention, and restore testing. A single SSD is not a complete backup strategy. |
| Restoration complexity | Usually low: add or update a remote and push or fetch refs, then reapply host policies. | Higher: retrieve and verify the archive, clone or restore it, configure a new remote, and reconcile any work created elsewhere. |
Mirror-specific behavior and safety rules
A mirrored clone is a replication artifact, not a normal development checkout. It tracks refs broadly and is designed to be updated from the source. GitHub warns that fetching into a mirror can overwrite local references so the mirror stays aligned with the source.
Do not make independent feature commits inside the mirror and expect them to remain after the next synchronization. Develop in a normal working clone, then refresh the mirror under a documented procedure. Protect the archive from accidental writes, and keep the timestamp and source revision associated with each stored copy.
When GitHub returns: reconcile before publishing
Do not immediately push a locally developed branch to the normal remote without checking what changed while you were offline. Fetch first:
git fetch origin
git log --oneline --graph --decorate --all
The graph shows whether the local branch and its upstream have diverged. If your team uses rebasing for topic branches, rebase onto the updated target:
git rebase origin/main
If your policy uses merge commits, merge the updated target instead. Resolve conflicts deliberately, run the required tests, and record the integration decision. Then push the resulting branch or fast-forwarded target:
git push origin HEAD:main
git push origin --tags
Replace main with the branch governed by your team’s workflow. Pushing HEAD:main makes the source and destination explicit; it does not bypass branch protection or required reviews.
Understand a non-fast-forward rejection
A non-fast-forward rejection means the remote contains commits that your local branch does not contain, or that the remote branch moved while you were offline. It is a safety signal, not a reason to force-push. Fetch the remote, inspect the graph, and integrate the histories with the approved merge or rebase process. Preserve both sets of commits until the team confirms which result should become authoritative.
Handle work published to the backup
If developers pushed outage commits to the backup remote, choose one authoritative integration path. You might fetch the backup branch into a local branch, compare it with origin, and merge or rebase it before publishing to GitHub:

git fetch backup
git switch -c reconcile/outage backup/outage/fix-login-timeout
git log --oneline --graph --decorate --all
Do not assume that the backup’s default branch or protection rules match GitHub’s. Reapply the normal review, testing, and release controls after the service is restored.
Common failure modes and fixes
“My clone cannot find an old commit”
Check whether it is shallow with git rev-parse --is-shallow-repository. If the source is reachable, run git fetch --unshallow. If it is not reachable, another full clone, mirror, or archive may be the only source for the missing history.
“Push says authentication failed”
Confirm the remote URL with git remote -v, then test the credential expected for that host. HTTPS generally requires the provider’s supported token flow rather than an account password; SSH requires the correct key, agent state, and host authorization. Never paste tokens into scripts, commit them, or place them in a remote URL that can be exposed in logs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The backup rejects my branch”
Read the host’s error and inspect branch protection, required checks, naming restrictions, hooks, and permissions. Push an explicitly named feature branch if the default branch is protected. Do not disable protections without an approved emergency process.
“LFS files are missing after restoration”
Git LFS content is stored separately from ordinary Git objects. Run git lfs fetch --all while the source is available, verify that the archive includes the LFS storage, and confirm that the destination host supports the required LFS workflow. A mirror containing only Git refs is incomplete for an LFS repository.
“The mirror lost my local reference”
That is expected risk when fetching into a mirror: synchronization can overwrite refs to match the source. Keep development commits in a normal clone and retain immutable archive copies rather than using the mirror as a scratch workspace.
A practical outage runbook
- Confirm the outage scope and switch the team to the alternate communication channel.
- Run
git status --short --branchand create a clearly named outage branch. - Commit tested work locally; record each commit ID and branch.
- Try the tested backup remote with an explicit branch push.
- If collaboration is needed, publish approved branches and communicate the backup URL and access method securely.
- If no remote works, create a bundle or copy the repository to independent, encrypted storage.
- Do not force-push or rewrite shared history to bypass a rejection.
- When GitHub returns, fetch
origin, inspect the graph, integrate according to policy, and push only after tests and protections pass. - After reconciliation, update the backup and create a fresh mirror archive if the incident produced important history.
How to test the plan before you need it
Schedule a short exercise rather than treating configuration as proof. From a disposable clone, push a test branch to the backup, fetch it from a second machine, create a local commit while pretending GitHub is unavailable, and confirm that the commit ID is visible to the team. Restore the mirror archive into a separate directory and verify branches, tags, and (where applicable) LFS objects. Record the exact commands, credential prerequisites, storage location, retention period, and owner of each step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also test the uncomfortable cases: a protected destination branch, an expired token, an unavailable SSH key, a shallow clone, a non-fast-forward update, and a repository with large LFS files. A runbook that only covers the successful path will fail at the moment its assumptions matter most.
Bottom line
GitHub downtime does not have to stop development. A complete local clone lets you continue editing, branching, testing, and committing; a tested backup remote restores team collaboration; and an independently stored mirror or bundle provides recovery when no service is reachable. Keep those layers separate, preserve commit IDs and branch names, include LFS objects where required, and reconcile with a fetch-and-inspect process instead of force-pushing when GitHub comes back.
