You can keep prerecorded children’s stories live on YouTube with OBS closed by moving playback and encoding to a cloud service. If OBS is the encoder, closing it stops the feed it sends; YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings do not keep a closed encoder running. A local alternative is to leave OBS or another encoder running on a powered computer.
Choose the right setup for prerecorded stories
For a prerecorded story loop, use a cloud encoder that plays the uploaded videos and sends the live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s verified-encoder information lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous streams of prerecorded video without a dedicated PC. That listing establishes the category fit, not current pricing, independent reliability, or particular features such as scheduling and recovery; check those with the provider before depending on them.
If you want to keep your existing OBS workflow, the computer running OBS must stay on, connected, and encoding. Another always-on local computer can do the same job, but it does not solve the goal of turning off the equipment at home. For a genuinely live, interactive performance, choose a workflow that supports live production rather than assuming a prerecorded-video service is a full replacement for OBS.
Check YouTube eligibility, rights, and audience settings
- Confirm livestream access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says creators must be at least 16 to livestream; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See Get started with live streaming.
- Clear every element for use. Confirm you have the necessary rights for each story, narration, music track, and illustration. Copyright matches or strikes may restrict a live stream. Review Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
- Set the audience designation accurately. If the content is made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, Super Chat, and reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may still appear. Read YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions.
Set up a cloud stream or keep a local encoder running
Cloud workflow for prerecorded stories
- Choose a cloud encoder. Check its current supported formats, upload and storage limits, looping and scheduling behavior, recovery process, alerts, access controls, and price. YouTube’s verified-encoder listing describes Gyre for continuous prerecorded streams without a dedicated PC; verify the provider’s current terms and capabilities.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the stream setup flow.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the cloud encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Check the preview before going live. Wait for the encoder’s feed to appear in Live Control Room, then verify picture, sound, and stream availability before starting the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Test and monitor the first run. Confirm the stories loop in the intended order, audio is audible, and the stream remains available. Check the provider’s alerts and recovery behavior rather than assuming a dropped connection will restart itself.
Local OBS or another local encoder
- Keep the encoder computer running. Start OBS or another encoder and keep the machine powered, connected to the internet, and free of sleep or shutdown interruptions. If the encoder stops, it stops sending the feed.
- Use YouTube’s stream details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, then enter the stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder explains the procedure.
- Wait for preview and check the feed. Confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room and test audio and video before going live. Auto-start and auto-stop settings affect how YouTube responds to the encoder; they do not run OBS after you close it. Details are in Manage live stream settings.
- Arrange ongoing oversight. Keep an eye on stream health and local recording storage. YouTube recommends monitoring quality; a local encoder also depends on the computer, power, and internet connection remaining available.
Plan the archive separately from the live broadcast
Do not assume a continuous broadcast will become a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local backup.

- If you need a usable YouTube replay, split very long programming into shorter sessions rather than relying on a single stream over 12 hours.
- If preserving the complete story collection matters, keep a separate recording or original copy. YouTube recommends checking that local archive files are growing and intact.
- The archive risk applies whether the feed comes from a cloud encoder or a local OBS computer; changing encoders does not change YouTube’s archive limitation.
