When extreme heat is in the forecast, shorten or skip a beach trip rather than relying on sunscreen, shade or gear to make a long stay safe. Check local conditions that day, plan for frequent water and cooling breaks, and watch children closely: they may not realize they need to stop. If a child develops serious symptoms, get them out of the heat and seek medical help.
Decide whether to go, shorten the visit or stay home
There is no single temperature or visit length that makes a beach outing safe for every child. Heat index, humidity, shade, activity, the child’s age and health, and access to cooling all matter. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises choosing a short beach or pool visit—or staying indoors—when it is very hot. Check the local forecast and heat advisories on the day, and choose a cooler indoor activity if conditions are extreme.
The AAP identifies a heat index at or above 90°F as a significant health risk in its general extreme-heat guidance. That is a broad heat-risk indicator, not a beach-specific cutoff or a guarantee that conditions below it are safe. Young children and babies are especially vulnerable; the CDC also notes that young children may need additional actions on hot days.
Plan for water, shade and cooling breaks
- Keep drinking water available and offer it often, before children ask. Schedule frequent rest breaks in a cool or shaded place; children absorbed in play may not notice they are getting too hot.
- For babies younger than six months, do not give water. The AAP advises offering breastfed infants additional breast milk and formula-fed infants additional formula instead.
- Use shade to reduce direct sun exposure, but do not treat a beach umbrella as sufficient UV protection by itself. Secure it so it cannot blow away.
- Consider the time of day and whether you can reach a cooler place or emergency help if needed. Gear cannot make an excessively hot outing safe.
Layer sun protection rather than relying on one measure
The AAP beach guidance recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen labeled SPF 15 or 30, applied before beach exposure and reapplied every two hours or after the child leaves the water. Sunscreen reduces one source of sun exposure; it does not prevent heat illness or guarantee against sunburn.
