Treat it as a device-specific experiment—not a setup certified for unattended use—and test it before relying on it.
Check the phone and its charging requirements first
Identify the exact phone model and Android version, then consult that model’s safety manual for charging and temperature guidance. Inspect the phone, its enclosure, battery, charger, and cable before connecting power. Do not use a phone or cable that is visibly damaged or appears compromised, and keep the charger accessible so you can disconnect power promptly.
Use a charger and cable compatible with the specific handset. Connector shape or a charger’s advertised wattage alone does not establish compatibility. For example, Google’s Pixel 4a Safety and regulatory manual specifies included or compatible charging accessories and warns that incompatible ones can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or damage. Those instructions apply to the Pixel 4a, not all Android phones.
Set up the phone to shed heat
Charging and a server workload can both add heat. Put the phone on a hard, stable, ventilated surface with air around it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heating vents, hot cars, blankets, and other places that trap heat. NIST’s Mobile Threat Catalogue also warns about charging in hot or heat-preserving environments and recommends peripherals designed for the device.

Temperature limits are model-specific. Google says the Pixel 4a works best at an ambient temperature of 0–35°C and should not be left where the temperature may exceed 45°C; those are not universal Android-phone limits. Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro safety guide notes that demanding modes can generate extra heat and may lead to reduced-power operation or temporary shutdown. Follow the manual for your own model rather than applying another phone’s figures.
Begin with a low-demand server workload and observe the phone during a trial run. The cited manufacturer guidance does not prescribe a universal workload or monitoring interval, so there is no single threshold or schedule that establishes safe operation for every handset.

Test whether Android will keep the server running
Being plugged in does not guarantee uptime. Android’s background-execution rules vary with the Android version, the app’s target SDK, its service type, and permissions. Android’s Android 12 behavior changes say apps targeting Android 12 (API 31) or later generally cannot start a foreground service while already in the background, subject to exceptions. Later versions add requirements: the Android 14 changes guide describes foreground-service type and permission requirements for apps targeting API 34 or later, while the Android 15 changes guide covers restrictions affecting some services launched at boot.
These rules do not mean that servers categorically cannot run on Android. They do mean that a service that starts manually may behave differently after idle time or reboot, depending on its implementation and the phone’s software.

Test the actual server software under the conditions you expect to use: with the display off, after the phone has been idle, and after a reboot. Check that the service starts and remains reachable as intended. The Android platform rules do not establish how a particular app or manufacturer-specific power-management feature will behave, so only testing that handset and service can answer that.
Foreground services and wake locks are different
A foreground service signals user-perceptible work, but it does not by itself keep the CPU awake when the display turns off. Android’s wake-lock documentation explains that a partial wake lock is a separate mechanism for keeping the CPU running. Use the server software’s documented lifecycle approach; unnecessary wake locks can drain power.

Use a cautious setup and know when to stop
- Identify the phone model and Android version, and read that model’s safety manual and charging requirements.
- Inspect the phone and cable; do not use damaged equipment. Connect only a compatible charger and cable, and keep the charger within reach.
- Place the phone on a hard, stable, open surface away from sun, heat sources, and soft coverings.
- Start the server with a low-demand workload and observe temperature and stability during a trial.
- Test the service with the screen off, after idle time, and after reboot. Confirm it works in the conditions you actually need.
- If the phone becomes abnormally hot, disconnect it from power, move it to a cooler place, and do not use it until it has cooled. Google gives this instruction for both the Pixel 4a and Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro; follow your own model’s guidance. If the phone is damaged or continues to behave abnormally, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.
Do not remove the battery as a casual workaround
The Android Open Source Project documents support for purpose-built batteryless devices in its batteryless device implementation guidance. That is platform guidance for devices designed for that arrangement, not a recommendation to remove the battery from a consumer phone. Unless the handset’s manufacturer explicitly supports batteryless operation, keep to its documented configuration.
