OBS may remain connected while a desktop or window capture freezes, so a running timer alone does not prove the broadcast is still working. The right fix depends on whether OBS stopped, its capture source lost the interactive desktop, or the server’s network connection dropped. Hetzner’s documentation does not provide a universal OBS-over-RDP persistence setting.
What “closing Remote Desktop” means matters
Closing the Remote Desktop client, choosing a disconnect option, signing out of Windows, and restarting the server are different actions. If you want to test whether OBS can continue unattended, do not sign out or restart during the test. First use the RDP client’s disconnect option, or close its window if that is the action you normally take, and observe what happens. Record exactly which action you used.
Run a short, private or unlisted test using the intended OBS scenes and sources. From a separate device, watch the destination stream and listen to its audio after disconnecting. Check the picture itself, not just OBS’s stream timer or YouTube’s live indicator. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes and describes adding desktop, window, game, video, and audio sources: OBS Quick Start Guide.
Identify which part of the stream is failing
OBS stops or YouTube goes offline
If the broadcast ends when you disconnect, OBS may have stopped, the Windows session may have ended, or the connection to YouTube may have failed. Check the OBS log and the YouTube stream status, then repeat the test while leaving the Windows session signed in. If the stream remains live only while RDP is connected, investigate the session and startup behavior before changing capture settings.

OBS stays live but the picture freezes or changes
This points toward the capture path rather than necessarily a lost YouTube connection. Display, window, and browser captures may rely on an interactive desktop or display context that changes when the RDP viewer disconnects. Identify the exact source in the affected scene and check whether it is the source output that freezes. Other direct media or input sources have different dependencies, so do not assume every OBS source behaves alike.
An OBS community forum discussion includes a report of browser window capture freezing after RDP disconnect and a response attributing it to an RDP virtual GPU. That is community experience, not an official rule or a guarantee that a particular remote-access tool fixes cloud graphics: OBS forum discussion.

The picture is correct but frames drop or the stream disconnects
That is a different problem from a frozen desktop capture. OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to an unstable connection between the computer and the ingest server, or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Check the server’s network path and the stream settings rather than treating the RDP display as the cause. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Test the setup before changing it
- Make a safe test broadcast. Use a private or unlisted stream, or another safe test destination, and use the same OBS scene, sources, and audio devices as the intended broadcast.
- Start streaming and confirm the baseline. Check that the stream appears correctly at the destination while RDP is still connected. Verify both audio and video.
- Disconnect without signing out. Use the RDP disconnect action or close the client as you normally would; do not choose Sign out or restart.
- Inspect from a separate device. Watch the stream after the RDP viewer is gone. Note whether OBS remains live, whether the image changes or freezes, whether audio continues, and whether YouTube reports a disconnect.
- Reconnect and compare. Check OBS’s status and logs and determine whether the failure began in OBS, in a particular source, or in the connection to YouTube. Repeat once if the result is not clear.
Use OBS launch options for startup—not capture persistence
OBS supports launch parameters including --startstreaming, --scene, --profile, and --collection. For example, these options can tell OBS to start streaming with a chosen scene, profile, and scene collection. They automate how OBS launches; they do not keep an RDP-dependent desktop capture alive when the display or session changes. The official OBS Launch Parameters guide says Windows scheduled tasks and other automated launches should set “Start in…” to the folder containing obs64.exe.

If you automate startup, test that exact launch method after a server restart and separately repeat the RDP-disconnect capture test. A successful OBS launch does not establish that its sources will produce the intended picture unattended.
Choose a remote-session approach only after checking the host
Confirm whether your Hetzner machine is a cloud VM or a physical dedicated server, what Windows installation and license apply, and whether the deployed system has a usable display or GPU path. The available configuration depends on the product and account. Hetzner’s Windows Server 2025 documentation covers its dedicated-server Windows add-on and RDP access: Windows Server 2025. Its separate guide discusses customer-installed Windows on Cloud and licensing and architecture constraints, including that its Arm64 CAX servers do not support Windows Server: Windows on Cloud.

Hetzner also documents a Cloud Console VNC console for provider console access. Its FAQ describes the console as intended for emergencies and recommends SSH for routine management. Neither page promises that the console preserves a Windows interactive desktop or an OBS capture session. Do not treat provider VNC as a session-persistence fix without verifying how it behaves on your deployed server: Using the console and Hetzner FAQ.
Remote-control software that mirrors an existing physical console may be relevant on some physical GPU systems, but that is not an established solution for every cloud VM. Verify compatibility with the actual host and test the resulting source output before relying on it.

Use OBS WebSocket for control, not as a display fix
OBS WebSocket can let an external client control OBS, but control does not preserve a Windows display source. WebSocket integration is built into OBS Studio 28 and later. If you enable it, follow OBS’s guidance to use authentication and set a password: OBS Remote Control Guide.
When a direct media pipeline may be a better fit
If your program is a video file or another source that does not need desktop capture, a direct media pipeline may avoid dependence on an interactive RDP desktop. Before switching, validate that the pipeline can handle your actual media, overlays, audio, and YouTube ingest workflow. Hetzner’s Owncast guide covers operating an Owncast destination receiving OBS or other RTMP sources; it is a different architecture, not proof of a direct YouTube solution: Hetzner Owncast guide.
