To restart a yoga nidra stream automatically after Windows restarts, configure OBS to launch at your Windows account’s sign-in with the --startstreaming parameter. OBS can start its streaming output this way, but that alone does not guarantee that your streaming platform will restore the same live event or reconnect after every network interruption. Set it up, then test it with your exact account, OBS installation, and destination.

Before you automate OBS

First make sure the stream works when started manually. Open OBS and check the scene, media and audio sources, destination, and credentials. Save the active profile and scene collection. Automation starts the setup you have saved; it cannot fix missing media, expired credentials, incorrect audio routing, or platform-side restrictions.

OBS’s Launch Parameters documentation, dated May 30, 2021, lists --startstreaming as “Automatically start streaming.” It also documents optional parameters for selecting a saved profile, scene collection, or scene.

Set OBS to start streaming at Windows sign-in

1. Find the OBS executable

Locate obs64.exe in your OBS installation. A typical 64-bit installation uses C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe, but use the actual path on your computer.

If OBS must use a particular saved setup, its documented optional arguments include --profile "name", --collection "name", and --scene "name". Replace each name with the exact saved name. Avoid adding these unless you need to select a setup explicitly.

3. Create a logon task in Task Scheduler

  1. Open Windows Task Scheduler and create a task for the Windows account that will run OBS.
  2. Add a At log on trigger for that account. Microsoft describes a logon trigger as one that “starts a task when a user logs on”; its documentation also supports a configurable delay after sign-in.
  3. Add an action that launches obs64.exe with the --startstreaming argument, or launches the shortcut you configured. Check that the executable path and argument are separate and correct.
  4. Set the task’s Start in (working directory) field to the folder containing obs64.exe. With the typical path above, that folder is C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bit. OBS specifically calls out this working-directory requirement for scheduled or other automated launches.
  5. If startup is competing for PC resources, you can add a short trigger delay. Choose one appropriate to your computer and verify it; no fixed delay guarantees that the network or streaming service will be ready.

Microsoft’s documentation covers the logon trigger, its delay setting, and starting an executable when a user logs on.

4. Choose a visible desktop session

For ordinary use, trigger the task when the account that operates OBS logs on. A task that runs before sign-in may start a process without presenting the visible OBS window in the later desktop session. Microsoft also documents an interactive-only option for tasks that should run only while the specified user is logged on. Use a pre-sign-in or system-start arrangement only if you have specifically verified that it provides the OBS control and operating mode you need.

5. Decide whether to gate startup on network availability

Task Scheduler offers an optional condition to start only when a network connection is available. This checks Windows-reported network availability, not whether your router has reached the internet or the specific streaming endpoint is accepting a connection. It also does not create a retry loop if OBS launches before the service is ready. See Microsoft’s documentation for the RunOnlyIfNetworkAvailable property.

Test the restart and the actual live event

  1. Save the task and confirm that it is enabled for the intended Windows account.
  2. When it is safe for the broadcast to go live, sign out and back in or perform a planned Windows restart.
  3. Confirm that OBS opens in the expected session, loads the correct scene and media, and reports that it is streaming.
  4. Check the destination platform itself. Verify that the intended event is live and that the yoga nidra audio and video are actually playing.
  5. If recovery after a router or modem restart matters, test with that real network arrangement. A computer starting before network equipment is ready can behave differently from an ordinary sign-in.

Do not treat a successful OBS launch as proof that the platform restored the right event. Platforms differ: some may reconnect to an existing broadcast, while others depend on event or stream settings that must be configured separately. The destination is not specified here, so its behavior and automatic-start controls must be checked in that platform’s own account.

Startup options and their trade-offs

Approach Visibility and control Startup timing and network handling Best fit
Startup-folder shortcut Launches in the signed-in desktop session. Starts on sign-in, with limited timing and network controls. A simple setup when launching OBS at sign-in is enough.
Task Scheduler logon task Can be configured for a specific user’s logon and desktop workflow. Supports a logon delay and an optional Windows network-availability condition; neither verifies streaming-service health. The recommended Windows approach when you need more control over launch timing.
Pre-logon or system-start task May start a process without the visible OBS interface expected in a desktop session. Can start earlier, but still cannot guarantee that the network or destination is ready. Only a specifically tested setup that does not depend on ordinary visible desktop control.

Troubleshoot when the stream does not return

OBS does not open after sign-in

  • Check that the task is enabled and its trigger names the Windows account you actually use.
  • Verify the action’s executable path, the --startstreaming argument, and the Start in directory.
  • If the task is configured to run before sign-in, try a normal user-logon trigger if you need OBS visible in the desktop.

OBS opens, but does not start streaming

  • Confirm the argument is exactly --startstreaming and is outside the quoted executable path.
  • Check that OBS loaded the intended profile, collection, and scene, and that the media files still exist at their saved paths.
  • Recheck destination credentials, audio routing, and any platform controls required to start that live event. The OBS launch parameter does not resolve these issues.

OBS starts before the network or platform is ready

  • A network-availability condition is only a Windows network check; it does not confirm that the streaming service is reachable.
  • A logon delay may help with ordinary startup ordering, but a fixed delay cannot account for every router or modem boot time.
  • Test the complete setup after the network equipment has restarted. A recurring retry mechanism requires additional automation and should be designed and tested separately.

OBS stops or displays a recovery prompt

--startstreaming starts streaming when OBS launches; it is not a monitor that relaunches OBS after a later crash or stop. If an improper shutdown produces a recovery or safe-mode prompt, resolve the underlying shutdown issue and verify the installed OBS release’s behavior. Do not assume the task will pass through an interactive prompt unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does OBS automatically reopen the same YouTube live event after a Windows restart?

Not necessarily. OBS can start its streaming output, but whether YouTube restores the intended event depends on its event and stream configuration; verify the result in YouTube Studio.

Can a startup delay guarantee that my router is ready?

No. A delay is a timing aid, not a check that the router, internet connection, or streaming endpoint is available.
