A Windows restart interrupts a YouTube stream if its only encoder is running on that same PC. To avoid an unexpected interruption, set Windows active hours to cover the broadcast and schedule any pending restart for a quiet time. If the stream must continue while that computer reboots, move encoding to a separate system or use a tested backup encoder; neither option protects against every power, internet, or YouTube outage.
Why a Windows update can interrupt a YouTube stream
An encoder sends video and audio to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. When Windows restarts, an encoder running on that computer cannot keep sending its feed during the reboot. This is an operational consequence of the encoder depending on the PC, not a promise from YouTube about what will happen to every stream after a restart.
Windows sometimes requires a restart to finish installing updates. Active hours and scheduled restarts help move that interruption outside your broadcast window, but pausing updates is temporary: it does not keep a PC from updating indefinitely.
Prevent an update restart during the broadcast
Set active hours
- Open Settings > Windows Update. In applicable Windows 11 versions, open Advanced options > Active hours.
- Set active hours to cover the period when the PC is streaming. Windows uses this setting to try to restart outside the hours you are using the device; it cannot guarantee that every restart will wait until a convenient time.
- If the computer is managed by a workplace or school, check with its administrator. Managed update policies may differ from the controls available on a personal PC.
Schedule a pending restart
If Windows says a restart is needed, choose Schedule the restart and select a time outside the stream. Do not start a restart on the only encoder PC while continuity matters.

Pause updates only as a short-term measure
Windows 11 offers a temporary update pause. Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 guidance describes pausing for up to 35 days, though controls and availability can vary by Windows version and rollout. A pause expires, and updates cannot be deferred indefinitely. Some updates—such as Defender security intelligence, AI component, critical or expedited driver, and emergency/out-of-band updates—may be handled differently under Microsoft’s described monthly restart experience.
Check your Windows version
Windows version affects which update controls and policies apply. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; do not assume ordinary free Windows Update security fixes continue after that date. Special servicing arrangements may differ and should be checked separately.

Prepare and verify the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the correct scheduled stream is selected. In the encoder, verify the YouTube server URL and stream key for that stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to the stream.
- Start the encoder feed and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the stream is reachable on its watch page and that both audio and video are correct before starting the event.
- Monitor stream health during the broadcast. YouTube’s status view can show specific errors and suggested actions; consult it if the feed degrades or disconnects.
- For a planned event, YouTube advises configuring the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees. Test your own setup before relying on it.
YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to configure the server URL and stream key, send the feed, and end it by stopping the feed or selecting End Stream in Live Control Room. Its stream settings also describe optional auto-start and auto-stop, which let the encoder control starting and stopping when enabled. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, Set up your encoder for live streaming, and Monitor your live stream.

If the stream must continue while Windows restarts
Use a separate streaming computer or hardware encoder
Encoding on a separate computer or standalone hardware encoder means the Windows update host is no longer the system sending the feed. YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows; a hardware encoder may suit a higher-production setup, but it is optional. This approach needs additional equipment and configuration, and it does not protect the stream from an outage affecting the encoder, power, internet connection, or YouTube ingest.
Test a backup encoder before depending on it
YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then confirming that the player switches to the backup encoder. Do this before a real broadcast, not for the first time during an update. A backup that has not been tested is not a dependable continuity plan.

Reconnect after an interruption
If the stream stops during the update, let Windows finish restarting, reopen the encoder, confirm its server URL and stream key, and reconnect. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before resuming according to your channel’s chosen workflow. YouTube documents encoder setup and monitoring; it does not promise that a feed will recover automatically after a Windows update.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on one indefinitely archived recording for a 24/7 broadcast; plan how to end, restart, and manage archives, and verify the current channel interface and policies. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.

Keeping the encoder online does not establish that you have permission to stream a particular song or recording. Check the rights for each track and any channel restrictions that apply; the technical steps here do not determine whether YouTube will allow specific Indian music content.
Or let it run in the cloud
If Windows updates are the recurring risk, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud rather than from the PC at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the material as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI is available; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not live camera footage.

Common problems and fixes
- Windows shows a restart countdown during the stream: If the PC is the only encoder, use the restart scheduling controls to move it outside the broadcast window. Do not assume active hours can prevent every restart.
- The YouTube preview never appears: Confirm the encoder is sending to the correct server URL and stream key, then check Live Control Room for a status message or error. Keep the key private.
- The stream ends after an update: Reopen the encoder after Windows finishes, verify its YouTube connection details, reconnect, and check the preview and stream health. Automatic recovery after a Windows restart is not guaranteed.
- A backup encoder does not take over: Test the failover procedure ahead of time by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, and confirm the player actually switches to the backup.
- A long broadcast is missing an expected archive: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Use a planned session and archive workflow for longer broadcasts.
