FFmpeg can attempt to recover from some temporary output-network failures, but it cannot send a live stream through a complete loss of internet or power. For a YouTube stream, use FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery settings for transient failures, leave upload bandwidth headroom, and prepare an independent backup connection if you need protection against a broadband outage. Test the full setup before going live: recovery can involve dropped content, and no setting guarantees uninterrupted playback.
What can keep running—and what cannot
An “internet outage” can mean different failures, and each needs a different remedy:
- Temporary RTMP output failure: FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt to recover from some temporary network failures while processing continues. Recovery is not guaranteed for every error or ingest configuration.
- FFmpeg exits: A process supervisor can restart the encoder, but restarting FFmpeg does not restore a failed network route.
- Your broadband connection goes down: FFmpeg needs another working route to YouTube, such as an independent mobile connection or second fixed connection. A backup encoder alone does not provide one.
- Power is lost: The encoder and network equipment need working power. Network redundancy does not solve a local power failure.
YouTube Help cautions: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” No recovery option can deliver packets to YouTube while every available internet path is down.
Configure FFmpeg to attempt recovery from temporary output failures
FFmpeg’s official formats and muxers documentation shows a FIFO muxer pattern for streaming to an RTMP server while continuing real-time processing during a temporary network failure and attempting recovery. Treat this as an illustrative command, not a guaranteed YouTube configuration. Replace the placeholders with your input, intended stream mapping and codecs, and the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Never publish or share your stream key.

Confirm the installed FFmpeg build accepts these options, then test with your actual input and YouTube ingest configuration. The example does not establish that every RTMP or RTMPS error is recoverable, that no frames or audio will be lost, or that viewers will see continuous playback.
Do not apply HTTP reconnect options to RTMP output
Options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed and -reconnect_at_eof are documented for FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol handling. Their existence does not establish retry behavior for a YouTube RTMP output URL. RTMP output recovery is a separate case; use and test the FIFO muxer approach rather than treating HTTP reconnect flags as the fix.

Set up YouTube encoding and leave bandwidth headroom
Measure upload capacity at the streaming location and at the time you expect to go live. Test under realistic household or workplace network load; an advertised download rate is not evidence that your outbound stream will hold. YouTube recommends at least 20% bandwidth above the total stream bitrate. If your measured connection cannot sustain the intended stream with that margin, reduce bitrate or resolution and test again.

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not measurements of Indian ISP performance or a promise that a particular connection can sustain the bitrate. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to Google’s servers. Encryption does not keep a connection alive during an outage. Take the actual stream URL from Live Control Room and verify that your installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol you choose.

Prepare and test before the scheduled stream
- Match the real program. Test with audio and motion similar to the event, using the intended resolution, codec, frame rate and bitrate.
- Start the encoder early. YouTube recommends starting encoders ahead of the scheduled event so you can check the stream before viewers arrive.
- Check Live Control Room. Review the preview and stream health, including status and any specific error message.
- Exercise the failure path. Test FFmpeg’s recovery configuration against your actual ingest setup. If you have a backup encoder, test failover before relying on it.
- Verify local recording. If you are keeping an archive, confirm the file exists, is growing during the stream, and is intact after a test.
Use a genuinely independent connection for a broadband outage
If the primary ISP path is unavailable longer than FFmpeg’s recovery can tolerate, the encoder must reach YouTube over another working route. A separately provisioned mobile network or second fixed connection may help only if it is available at the site and does not share the same failure point. A cellular failover router is an optional, location-dependent way to use a mobile connection; it cannot create coverage or guarantee that a carrier’s network will remain available.
Before relying on mobile failover in India, check local carrier coverage, supported bands, plan limits and upload capacity at the exact location. Test whether the router switches automatically and whether the stream reconnects successfully. No particular router model, carrier compatibility, local coverage or failover performance is established here.

Backup encoder is not the same as backup internet
YouTube describes testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. For failover, the primary and backup streams need matching settings, including resolution, codec, interlacing, profile and bitrate. This protects against some encoder or ingest failures, but if both encoders use the same broadband connection, an outage of that connection can still stop both.
Account separately for power loss
A power cut can stop the encoder, modem or router even if a mobile network is available. If you use a UPS, size it for the devices that must stay on and test the actual runtime; a UPS is not evidence that a long stream will survive a power outage.

Troubleshoot an interruption in order
- Check the evidence. Note when the interruption began, inspect FFmpeg’s log, and check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health status and specific errors.
- Check whether FFmpeg is still running. If the process exited, an external supervisor may restart it. That addresses process management, not a missing network route; confirm the input, audio and video are healthy after restart.
- Separate encoder trouble from connectivity trouble. If FFmpeg is alive but transmission is failing, test outbound upload and the route to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube directs operators with connection-test problems to their ISP.
- Test redundancy rather than assuming it. If using a backup encoder, verify matching stream settings and perform YouTube’s failover test. If using a second internet path, test that path at the streaming location.
- Inspect the result. After recovery, review stream health and check the local archive for gaps or damage. A recovered live encoder cannot retroactively restore footage that was not delivered or recorded.
