Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Run FFmpeg in the foreground as a systemd service and set Restart=on-failure so systemd can restart it after an observed process failure. This can recover from FFmpeg exiting; it does not guarantee a healthy viewer-facing stream, restore every network connection, or ensure uninterrupted uptime. For a kids’ livestream, the right input, destination, credentials, moderation, and platform rules depend on the setup—this guide uses placeholders rather than assuming them.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
FFmpeg reads an input, processes it, and writes an output. Keep it as the service’s main foreground process so systemd can observe its exit status. Do not put it in the background with a shell command such as ... followed by &: systemd should supervise FFmpeg itself. FFmpeg options usually apply to the next input or output, so their position in the command matters. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
| Recovery method | What it can address | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg protocol reconnect | Some connection failures supported by the specific input protocol and configured retry options. | Options and behavior vary by protocol and build; an input reconnect does not necessarily detect a publishing failure downstream. |
systemd Restart=on-failure |
An observed process exit, abnormal termination, or applicable timeout. | A process that remains alive but is stalled may not trigger a restart. Start-rate limiting can also stop repeated launch attempts. |
| Startup network ordering | Orders service startup after the network manager’s configured online condition. | Does not monitor or restore connectivity after startup. |
| Health check or watchdog | Could detect a live process that is not producing useful output, if a meaningful health signal is defined. | Requires a deliberately designed check and failure action; a basic service unit does not supply one. |
These mechanisms solve different problems. A network interruption may call for protocol-specific reconnect behavior; a process crash may call for systemd restart behavior. If FFmpeg stays alive while useful frames stop reaching the destination, Restart=on-failure may have nothing to act on. A health check must define what “healthy” means for the actual source and destination before it can address that case.
Check the versions and protocols first
Flags and service behavior depend on installed versions and the protocol in use. Before building a unit, inspect the local software and protocol help:

ffmpeg -versionsystemd --version- FFmpeg’s local help or documentation for the input and output protocols you actually use.
The online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated for the newest revision, so it may not match an older installed build. The cited Ubuntu Jammy systemd.service manual describes systemd 249.11-0ubuntu3.22; other Ubuntu releases may differ. For long-running services, that manual calls Restart=on-failure the recommended choice. It also documents start-rate limits: StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst= can constrain repeated launches. See the Ubuntu Jammy systemd.service manual.
Create a foreground FFmpeg service
This is a schematic template, not a tested unit for a particular host. Replace every square-bracket placeholder and choose options that match your source and destination. Put each FFmpeg option where it belongs: input options before the corresponding -i, and output options before the output. Do not insert real credentials in a published example.
# /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-livestream.service
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg livestream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [options appropriate to this source and destination] -i [INPUT] [OUTPUT_OPTIONS] [OUTPUT]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Understand the service settings
Type=simplesuits a process that runs in the foreground; systemd supervises the FFmpeg process started byExecStart=.User=streameris an example restricted service account name. Create an account appropriate for the host and grant only the file and device access the stream needs.Wants=andAfter=express a startup relationship withnetwork-online.target. Whether that target means the network is ready depends on the network manager’s configuration; it is not a continuing connectivity monitor. See systemd’s network-online documentation.Restart=on-failurerequests a restart after an observed failure rather than a clean stop. systemd’s start-rate limits can eventually stop further automatic attempts after repeated failures.RestartSec=5sis an illustrative delay, not a value validated for every workload. Choose a delay that fits the service and avoid an unnecessarily tight restart loop.
The service manual’s recommendation is specifically for long-running services. The exact template above still needs validation for your Ubuntu version, paths, permissions, FFmpeg command, and restart limits.
Install, start, and inspect the service
- Save the completed unit as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-livestream.service. - Tell systemd to reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-livestream.service. - Inspect its current state and recent status details:
systemctl status ffmpeg-livestream.service. - Follow the service’s recent journal output:
journalctl -u ffmpeg-livestream.service -f.
Confirm local paths, permissions, command behavior, and restart behavior before relying on unattended operation. The commands above describe a deployment sequence; they do not establish that the template has been run or validated on your host.

Configure reconnection for the actual input
FFmpeg’s reconnect options are protocol-specific. Its HTTP protocol documentation describes options for reconnecting on disconnect, end of file, and network errors, as well as retry counts and delay limits. Do not copy HTTP options onto a different protocol and assume they apply. Check the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the protocol and installed build you use.
If the source is RTSP
FFmpeg documents RTSP transport choices including UDP, TCP interleaving, and HTTP/HTTPS tunneling. Which one is appropriate depends on the source and network; select only after checking compatibility in your setup. Transport selection is not a general systemd restart setting and should not be treated as proof that the publishing side is healthy.
If the source is a finite local file
If you intend to repeat a finite local media file, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite looping. It is an input option, so place it before the relevant -i. Looping a file is not a reconnect mechanism for a live camera or network source. See the FFmpeg CLI documentation.
Protect stream keys and source credentials
RTMP/RTMPS stream keys and source credentials should not appear in public examples, shell history, or broadly readable files. Use a restricted service account and protect any files that contain secrets. The appropriate credential-storage and hardening choices depend on the host, FFmpeg’s required device and file access, and the deployment; validate them rather than copying a generic sandbox configuration.

Troubleshoot common continuity failures
- The service fails immediately: inspect
systemctl status ffmpeg-livestream.serviceandjournalctl -u ffmpeg-livestream.service -f. Check that the FFmpeg path, placeholder replacements, option order, input/output access, and service-account permissions are correct. - It starts, then stops after an input interruption: determine the input protocol and consult its FFmpeg documentation for supported reconnect options and retry limits. HTTP-specific options are not universal.
- It keeps restarting: use the journal to identify the underlying failure, then review
RestartSec=and the systemd start-rate limits. A restart policy cannot fix an invalid command or inaccessible source. - systemd reports the service active, but viewers do not receive useful video: the process may still be running, so
Restart=on-failuremay not trigger. Define a meaningful health check or timeout that detects the failure condition and chooses an appropriate recovery action. - The service starts before the network is usable: check the network manager’s definition of “online” and the service ordering.
network-online.targetaffects startup ordering; it does not watch the network for later outages.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg process on an Ubuntu host. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not going live from a camera. Its monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free-trial registration or learn more at StreamNeo.
