To keep a podcast stream live on YouTube from a Linux desktop, use OBS Studio to send your prepared audio and a static visual to YouTube through RTMPS. You can enable OBS’s automatic reconnect to help with connection drops, but OBS alone does not guarantee a 24/7 stream: the desktop, power, network, software, rights status, and YouTube’s archive limit all matter.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires the channel to be verified, at least 16 years old, and free of live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Linux desktop capable of running OBS and encoding your chosen output. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland for Linux/Unix, but meeting those basics does not prove the computer can handle a particular resolution or scene. Check OBS system requirements.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected video bitrate plus headroom for normal variation.
- Podcast audio you have the rights to stream, and a visual asset suitable for the live video, such as show artwork you are licensed to use.
Set up the Linux desktop stream in OBS
1. Install OBS Studio
Use the OBS Project’s Linux installation guidance at OBS Linux installation. OBS recommends Flathub for distributions other than Ubuntu and provides a PPA route for Ubuntu. Install from the route appropriate to your distribution, then open OBS Studio.
2. Create a podcast scene
In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast. Add the prepared podcast audio as an audio input and add a still image or other suitable visual source so viewers see an intentional picture while the audio plays. If you will speak live, add and test a microphone input; a microphone is unnecessary for simply relaying prerecorded audio. OBS’s overview describes its scenes and audio sources: OBS Studio overview.
Listen to the audio through OBS before going live. Confirm the correct source is active, levels are not clipping, and playback does not stop or loop unexpectedly. If the program is a sequence of episodes, prepare the audio playback so transitions and gaps behave as intended; OBS’s stream connection does not itself guarantee continuity of the program source.

3. Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select one you intend to reuse. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if it is offered as a service, or choose a custom streaming server and enter YouTube’s server URL. Paste the stream key into the stream-key field and apply the settings.
Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube explains that stream keys function as the credential and address for the encoder in its encoder setup instructions and stream settings help. Do not publish it in a screenshot, script, or public chat.
4. Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
Use RTMPS where available. It is YouTube’s encrypted RTMP ingest option. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), use a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Set the bitrate to suit the resolution and frame rate you choose and, crucially, a sustained upload speed you have tested; there is no single bitrate that is right for every connection. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings and RTMPS guidance.

In OBS, configure the stream output to match those recommendations and the capacity of your machine and connection. Higher resolution or frame rate increases encoding and network demands. Start with a configuration your desktop can sustain, then test before relying on it for a long broadcast. A computer that meets OBS’s minimum system requirements may still struggle with demanding encoding or scene settings.
5. Test the stream before depending on it
- Start a private or otherwise limited test stream from OBS and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
- Review YouTube’s stream health indicators and confirm the picture is stable.
- Listen for the full audio path: opening, transitions, quieter passages, and the point where playback loops or changes to the next program.
- Test using the same resolution, bitrate, audio, and scene complexity planned for the continuous stream.
- Stop the test and correct any source, level, dropped-frame, or connection issues before the public launch.
Make the stream more resilient—and know its limits
Enable OBS automatic reconnect
OBS documents an automatic reconnect option in its streaming controls. Enable it and test what happens when the connection is briefly interrupted. It can help with some dropped connections, but it is not an uptime guarantee: it does not by itself relaunch OBS after every application crash, restart a desktop after power loss, or repair an operating-system or network failure. Plan for failures beyond the encoder
A desktop-based broadcast depends on the whole local chain: the computer remains powered on, Linux stays running, OBS continues encoding, the audio source keeps playing, and the internet connection remains usable. Monitor the YouTube stream health and verify that the program audio continues. If you need unattended recovery after reboots or process failures, configure and test that separately for your Linux system; there is no universal boot or service recipe established here.
- Internet interruption: OBS reconnect may recover from some drops. Check the YouTube preview and audio after the connection returns.
- OBS crash or desktop restart: Reconnection settings should not be mistaken for automatic application relaunch or startup after reboot. Test your own restart and recovery arrangements.
- Power failure: The stream stops when the desktop loses power. A UPS may reduce interruptions from brief outages, but the required capacity depends on the equipment and desired runtime.
- Audio source stops: A live connection can remain up while the podcast audio is silent. Confirm the playback source and its continuation during tests and monitoring.
- YouTube enforcement: Copyright matching or missing rights can interrupt a technically healthy stream.
Do not rely on one complete YouTube replay for an all-day stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream lasting 12 hours or more will yield one complete replay. If you need a full recording, arrange a separate local recording workflow and confirm you have enough storage; OBS output and local recording should both be tested before the long run. Clear the rights before broadcasting
You need the rights required for both the live broadcast and any archived material, including applicable music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the video with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even when you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for the stream to proceed without interruption. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and verify permissions for every podcast segment, intro, background track, guest clip, and visual asset.
Technical setup does not establish permission to use copyrighted material. Keep records of licenses and permissions, and do not assume that owning a copy or having permission for an audio-only podcast automatically covers a YouTube live stream or its archive.
