Run your encoder inside a detached tmux or screen session on the Compute Engine VM, then disconnect SSH. The encoder can continue running because it is no longer tied to the SSH terminal. Reattach later to inspect it. This protects against an SSH disconnect—not a VM reboot, stop, crash, network loss, encoder failure, or YouTube ending the live event.
Choose the right persistence method
| Need | Approach | What it does not cover |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a stream running after you close SSH during a one-off session | Start the encoder in tmux or screen, then detach. |
It does not restart the encoder after a VM reboot. |
| Start or restart an encoder after a VM reboot | Use a Linux startup script or configure a managed Linux service such as systemd, validating the setup for your VM’s distribution. |
Boot automation does not protect against all failures, and startup scripts have prerequisites. |
Google Cloud recommends terminal multiplexers for long-running terminal sessions. Its SSH-in-browser guidance says, “If you plan to keep the terminal window open for an extended period of time, use terminal multiplexers like tmux or screen.” Google Cloud SSH-in-browser guidance.
Keep the encoder running after SSH disconnects
Start and detach a tmux session
- Connect to the Linux VM over SSH and ensure the encoder you intend to run is installed and configured.
- Create a named session with
tmux new -s youtube. - Start the encoder inside that session. Keep its output visible while you confirm it starts; do not close the terminal before launching it there.
- Detach without stopping the encoder by pressing
Ctrl+B, thenD. - Now close SSH. The encoder remains in the detached session as long as the VM and process continue running.
- Reconnect and run
tmux attach -t youtubeto return to the session and inspect its output. Detach again withCtrl+B, thenD.
Use screen if it is your available multiplexer
- Connect over SSH and start a named session with
screen -S youtube. - Launch the encoder from inside the session.
- Detach with
Ctrl+A, thenD, and close SSH. - Reconnect and run
screen -r youtubeto reattach. Detach again withCtrl+A, thenD.
Use whichever multiplexer is available on your VM and familiar to you. If a session cannot be reattached, first check that you reconnected to the same VM and Linux user, and that the VM has not rebooted. A detached session is not a reboot-recovery mechanism.
Configure YouTube ingestion and check stream health
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the live stream, then enter them in the encoder. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance describes getting started with an encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not put it in public scripts or share it.
- Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP in its encoder settings guidance.
- Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and rate control to values supported by YouTube and appropriate to your intended output. YouTube’s recommendations vary by quality target; its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and gives a maximum of four seconds.
- Measure available outbound upload bandwidth under realistic VM conditions rather than relying on download speed. YouTube recommends planning for 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test before the event. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then monitor them during the broadcast. A running encoder process only shows that the process is running; it does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Lower-latency settings can also increase playback buffering, so choose latency with that trade-off in mind.
Recover after a VM reboot
Detaching protects an encoder from the end of an SSH terminal session, but a reboot removes the running process and its multiplexer session. To start the encoder at boot, Google Compute Engine supports Linux startup scripts. Google documents that startup scripts run as root, require the guest environment, and run only when a network is available: Use startup scripts on Linux VMs. The guest environment is described in Google Cloud’s guest agent documentation.

A Linux service manager such as systemd may be a better fit when you need a supervised, persistent process, but service definitions and setup depend on the VM’s Linux distribution and encoder. Validate the service configuration for that distribution; do not treat a detached tmux or screen session as a managed restart policy. In either approach, handle the stream key as a secret and make sure the encoder starts only after the required network and configuration are available.
Know what persistence does not guarantee
- VM state: A detached process does not keep a stopped or failed VM alive. Boot-time automation applies when the VM starts, subject to its prerequisites.
- Network and ingestion: A VM can still lose outbound connectivity or YouTube can stop receiving a usable feed. Check YouTube’s stream health and available upload capacity.
- Live-event duration: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Keeping the VM process running does not establish that a YouTube event can continue indefinitely. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream guidance.
- Content and channel eligibility: A persistent encoder does not override YouTube’s channel or content rules. Use material you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements before an event.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The stream stops when SSH closes | The encoder was started in the ordinary SSH shell rather than inside a multiplexer, or the session was terminated. | Reconnect and check whether the named tmux or screen session exists; launch the encoder from inside a detached session next time. |
| The encoder is gone after a reboot | A terminal multiplexer preserves a session across SSH disconnect, not a VM reboot. | Configure and validate a startup script or managed Linux service for the VM’s distribution. |
| The process runs but YouTube shows no healthy incoming stream | Incorrect stream URL or key, unsupported encoder settings, or an ingestion/network issue. | Verify the Live Control Room URL and key, prefer RTMPS where supported, review encoder settings, and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream health. |
| The stream drops or buffers intermittently | Insufficient or unstable upload bandwidth, among other possible encoder or network issues. | Check outbound bandwidth and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total stream bitrate; review stream health while testing. |
| The stream ends even though the encoder remains active | The encoder process alone does not determine YouTube event availability or duration. | Check Live Control Room status and YouTube’s applicable live-stream guidance; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without maintaining a VM and encoder session, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo plays the upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live capture.
