Keep the encoder sending video to YouTube while you change the playlist. A playlist edit and stopping the encoder are different actions: if video transmission on the bound stream stops, YouTube says it automatically ends the broadcast around a minute later. That is a lifecycle behavior, not a playlist-change grace period, so rehearse your playback-to-encoder workflow and check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
Why a playlist change can take a stream offline
An encoder sends a video feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key associated with the selected stream. The playlist is part of the playback workflow that supplies material to the encoder; changing playlist items should not require ending the YouTube broadcast if the encoder continues sending video.
The risk is a gap in that feed. YouTube’s official Live Streaming API documentation says, “YouTube will automatically end the broadcast around a minute after you stop sending video on the bound live stream.” This describes what happens when video transmission stops; it does not establish that YouTube allows a fixed one-minute pause for playlist transitions. Keep the encoder output running as you change songs

Enter that URL and key in the encoder you will use for the broadcast. Keep the encoder connected and transmitting while you edit or switch playlist items in your playback workflow.

Do not stop the encoder or end the YouTube broadcast merely to change a song. The continuity goal is an uninterrupted video feed from the encoder; YouTube does not prescribe a particular playlist application or crossfade method.

Rehearse the actual playlist workflow
Before the scheduled stream, use the same playlist player and encoder chain you intend to use live. Practice the changes most likely to create a gap, such as reaching the end of a track, moving to the next item, editing the queue, and replacing or removing a playlist item. Watch the outgoing feed during each transition. A smooth transition depends on the chosen playback and encoding setup; YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee seamless playback from a particular application.

Preview and monitor in YouTube Live Control Room

Start the encoder before the event and allow YouTube to receive the feed.

Open the stream’s preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that video and audio appear as expected before you begin or continue the broadcast.

Check stream health during the event, especially while rehearsing playlist changes and while making them live. YouTube advises creators to set up in advance, preview the stream, and monitor quality.

A primary-and-backup encoder setup can be relevant for a higher-production stream where losing the feed is especially costly. It adds setup and monitoring work, and it is not a requirement for ordinary playlist changes. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, while also noting that expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. The documentation does not quantify outage risk or compare encoder models.

If you configure a backup, test the full failover path before the event. YouTube’s suggested test is to stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup. Do not assume the backup will take over until you have confirmed it behaves as expected. YouTube encoder setup guidance
End the broadcast only when the event is over
When you have finished the radio stream, end it using YouTube’s documented broadcast workflow and stop the encoder feed. During playlist changes, leave the broadcast and encoder running; reserve stopping the feed for the actual end of the event. See YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle documentation.
