You can’t guarantee a YouTube property tour will never disconnect, but you can reduce avoidable failures: test the actual camera, audio and route at the property; choose a stream quality the location’s upload connection can sustain; use Ethernet for a computer encoder when practical; and start early enough to catch problems. Keep YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health visible, and rehearse any backup encoder before the tour.
Before the tour: check the connection and choose a sustainable quality
Test upload from the property
Run an upload speed test at the property, not just at your office. A speed-test result is only a snapshot: the connection may vary, and other people or devices sharing it can consume capacity during the tour. YouTube recommends allowing outbound capacity of “Primary + Backup + 20%” when planning for a primary and backup stream. That is a planning margin, not a promise that a connection will remain stable.
Do not treat a single speed-test result as a universal minimum for every tour. The encoder’s bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, any backup feed and other network traffic all affect the capacity needed.
Use a connection that suits the way you will film
For a computer-based stream, YouTube recommends an Ethernet connection when feasible. Choose a cable long enough to reach the computer without creating a trip hazard, and check that the computer has a compatible Ethernet port or adapter. Ethernet can make the computer’s connection more controlled, but it cannot prevent every outage.

A phone is easier to carry through a property, but its stream depends on Wi-Fi or mobile coverage along the entire route. Check signal in the rooms and transitions where you plan to film; a strong signal at the starting point does not establish coverage throughout the tour. If using mobile data, YouTube advises staying where the signal is strong.
Match resolution, frame rate and bitrate to the connection
Higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically more reliable. Choose settings that the property’s connection can sustain rather than raising quality at the expense of stability. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate, a keyframe interval of two seconds (not exceeding four seconds), and H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 depending on the ingestion method and encoder support. It supports up to 60 fps. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the data to and through Google’s servers.

Rehearse the actual property tour
A stationary test from a desk may miss problems that appear while walking between rooms. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Rehearse the route, camera handling, representative lighting and audio, and the same encoder configuration you intend to use. If you want to keep the rehearsal off the public channel, use an unlisted test.

- Confirm livestream access. Check that the channel is eligible to livestream and decide whether you will stream from a phone, webcam or encoder. YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for higher-production-value events and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for such events, while noting that expensive equipment is not required to get started.
- Set up the scheduled stream and encoder ahead of time. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before the event and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Run a representative unlisted test. Walk the intended route, speak at the expected distance from the microphone, and check the stream both in the encoder preview and in the YouTube player.
- Check the viewing path. Confirm you can open the event from the channel or watch page and view it on a mobile device.
- Confirm a local recording is being saved. Check that the archive file exists and its file size is growing during the test.
- Test any encoder backup. If you have configured a backup encoder, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable and check whether the player switches to the backup. This rehearsal does not guarantee that failover will work perfectly during every outage.
During the tour: use stream health to diagnose problems
Keep YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health display visible if possible. Read its specific status or error messages before changing settings. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes an issue affecting one viewer, which may be on that viewer’s device or network, from errors reported by many viewers on different connections, which can point to the encoder or outgoing feed.
- If the preview or local recording already looks or sounds wrong: check the camera or microphone path, encoder errors and computer CPU load.
- If the preview and local recording look healthy but the live stream is failing: investigate outbound connectivity from the property.
- If one viewer reports trouble: ask them to try another viewing method or check their own connection.
- If several viewers on separate connections report trouble: inspect the encoder and outgoing feed, and use Live Control Room’s status messages to narrow down the issue.
Keep the camera movement and speaking pace manageable, and avoid making several encoder changes at once. A change that appears to help one symptom can make it harder to identify the underlying problem.
