To resume a playlist-based YouTube Live broadcast after a Linux VPS reboots, run your streaming command in the foreground as a systemd service, enable that service at boot, and configure a deliberate restart policy. Then verify the broadcast is actually advancing in YouTube—not just that the service process is running.
This guide is for sending playlist media from your VPS to a public YouTube Live broadcast. Playing a playlist on the VPS itself is different: it does not publish a broadcast to YouTube. The commands below are starting points; replace the example paths and media command with the ones that work on your distribution and for your playlist.
Choose what you mean by “YouTube playlist stream”
- Public YouTube Live broadcast: Your VPS reads playlist media and sends an outgoing live feed to YouTube. Use a streaming command and a YouTube stream key.
- Playlist playback on the VPS: A player such as mpv plays the playlist on the server. That alone does not create or maintain a public YouTube Live broadcast.
The service setup below applies to either kind of long-running process, but the media command, credentials, and health checks differ. For an outgoing broadcast, confirm the incoming feed and live event in YouTube. For local playback, confirm observable output or media progress on the server.
Test the playlist command before making it a service
First, run the intended command interactively as the same unprivileged account that will run the service. Check that it can access every playlist item, resolve the media, and send output to the intended destination. Keep the command in the foreground; if it backgrounds itself and exits, systemd cannot supervise the actual media process reliably.

For headless playlist playback
mpv supports YouTube URLs through its youtube-dl-compatible integration; its FAQ advises supplying the actual playlist URL. yt-dlp can also pass media to a player through standard input and output streams. These integrations depend on upstream YouTube behavior and can break when YouTube changes how media is delivered, so test the playlist again after updates or failures.
For an outgoing YouTube Live broadcast
Use the media pipeline that already works for your playlist and YouTube Live event. Keep the stream key private: do not paste it into a publicly readable script, unit file, log, or support message. If you use an environment file for a secret, restrict its permissions and ensure the service account can read it. A running command does not establish that YouTube is receiving valid media.
Create a systemd unit
Create /etc/systemd/system/playlist-stream.service as root. This conceptual unit is not a tested, drop-in streaming configuration: replace the command and paths with your working setup.

User=mediaassumes that you created a dedicated account namedmedia. Choose an account that exists and has only the access the job needs.- Use the absolute path to the executable in
ExecStart. Confirm that the service account can execute it and read the playlist, configuration, and any local media files. - Keep the process in the foreground. If your command needs a shell wrapper, make sure the wrapper ultimately replaces itself with or waits for the media process rather than detaching it.
network-online.targetorders startup after the system’s network-online target. It does not guarantee that the internet or YouTube is reachable.Restart=on-failurerestarts the service after covered failures;RestartSec=10adds a delay before a restart. Choose a delay for your workload, and check the target distribution’s systemd behavior. Restart policies do not detect every hang or silent freeze.
Enable the service and inspect its logs

After creating or changing the unit, ask systemd to reload unit files and enable the service immediately:

Check whether systemd considers the service active and inspect its recent messages:
systemctl status playlist-stream.service journalctl -u playlist-stream.service -f -
Look for command errors, missing files, permission denials, failed playlist resolution, and destination connection errors. Fix the underlying problem rather than assuming systemd will repair it.

Enabling a unit links it into the configured boot dependencies so systemd can start it at boot. Starting a service successfully proves only that systemd started the process; it does not prove that media is playing or that a live feed is healthy.
Add media-level recovery only where it applies
Systemd handles process lifecycle failures. Media tools have separate recovery options, and those options apply only to their supported protocols and failure cases.
Recovering an HTTP input with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents HTTP input options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed. Use them only when the failing input is HTTP and the behavior fits the source. FFmpeg options often apply to the next input or output, so place each option in the correct position in the command. Verify the options supported by the FFmpeg version installed on your VPS.

Recovering an output with FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has separate output recovery options, including attempt_recovery. These are not a general fix for every destination failure; configure them for the relevant output and test their behavior with your installed version.
Reconnect options cannot be assumed to repair an expired media URL, an invalid stream key, a permission error, or an application-level hang. A restart policy, input reconnection, and output recovery address different layers; none substitutes for checking whether media is advancing.

Before rebooting, confirm the service is enabled and record its current status. Reboot only when you can afford the interruption to the stream.

After the VPS returns, inspect
systemctl status playlist-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u playlist-stream.servicefor startup errors and restart loops. -
For a YouTube Live broadcast, check the receiving side: confirm YouTube sees an incoming feed and that the media is advancing. For local playback, confirm output or other observable media progress.

If the process is active but media is frozen, investigate the media tool, input, network path, and destination. Systemd cannot infer content health from a live process alone.
Troubleshoot common failures
